For one on one conversations, what’s the benefit of WhatsApp versus just texting? Is this just a millenial thing?

Phone calls.

Que? How’s it any better than just calling normally? I guess if cell service is bad but wifi is good?

It's huge in everywhere but North America. Free texting, calls, etc.

I use it for work all the time. I have customers all over the world and my cell phone is my work phone which means I'd pay a fortune to call the international customers.

WhatsApp actually has VERY clear sound.

International calls are free on my cell phone.

I have some retired cell phones & was thinking of using that app on one for an alternate line of communications via wifi or tethering .

Google voice is handy for that also .

It's the most used communication app in the world, has been for years.

International calls are free.

Exactly. Plus it's end-to-end encryption. I use it only for 1 person, a developer in India that I hired. Works very well. :yesnod:

Yeah, sure, and yet Hunter's Whatsapp transcripts to a CCP affiliated foreigner were made public in their entirety. So weird ? Right ?

No, you pay for it in the "plan" you've selected.

I've used it several times while traveling overseas.

I use Whatsapp to make video calls with my parents in Austria.

This makes sense for international, but what’s the benefit for domestic stuff? Twice this week I’ve had people at work ask for my phone number to connect on whatsapp. I’ve never had a need outside of standard talk and text.

I thought the messages were taken right from crackhead's abandoned laptop. Not sure how encryption can help with that.

International calls are free.

This.... and texts, group texts, and calls are all supposed to be encrypted point-to-point. Do I trust it? Not really. Would I use it if overseas for free calls over wifi? Yes.

sending videos and photos is faster as whatsapp compresses videos. Try sending a 5 min HD video via text message.

International calls are free.

Yep, that is why I have it.
Nothing worse that some idiot you do not care about calling you while out of the country, and then viewing your next cell bill with $50+ of international calling charges.

Nope. You're paying for those calls. WhatsApp uses WiFi to make calls. I use WhatsApp if we're on a cruise or traveling out of the country.

T-Mobile has WiFi calling, so, whenever you are connected to WiFi, you are connected to the US phone network and calls to the US are free.

Exactly. Plus it's end-to-end encryption.

WhatsApp is owned by Facebook. Facebook's entire business model revolves around collecting and selling your personal information. There are better apps to use for free international communication than WhatsApp. :yesnod:

coming in here asking this old crowd about something that has been around for 15 years.

IMO, it is the best text app in the market. I've been using it since 2012.
