Got home from a mini vacation the other day. It was nice to get out of town. When we arrived back home, my wife let the dog out back to pee followed by some yelling.

While we were gone, the neighbor had their roof done. On a guess, maybe 30% of their old materials, was in our yard killing off many plants and veggies. Also picking up about a hundred Apricots off the tree. Roofing paper, old shingles crushing it all, nails everywhere.

I went over to the neighbors house to get the name of the company. They assumed I was blaming them. We go into it but they gave me the name.

I found them online and is no local schmo company. Locally owned but facilities statewide-5 stars. Apparently, they take their reviews seriously. I called but had to leave a message. So, I took some pics of the mess and damage and along with an explanation, posted it all online.

The owner called first thing yesterday morning. I didn't want anyone back there and took us 3 hours to clean it all up. Triple checking to get all the nails.

The man was overly apologetic swearing he will take care of that particular crew. He called back a short time later giving him a lame reason they could not get into the yard to clean it up because of the locked gate and the Lars Bars :D but this did not excuse the fact of throwing it all off and having it land wherever and doing the damage it did.

He will be coming by Tuesday to make amends. I have no idea what he has in mind as our roof is only 2 years old.

I said I would "temporarily" remove the review until Tuesday. Guess we'll see how this plays out. Better be one hell of a Pizza! :D

It took a 1-star review to get the Ohio car dealership (where I bought my 124 Spider) to finally honor their commitment to me. I'll leave out details for brevity, but the dealer was supposed to replace seat rails on the car prior to shipping it; they didn't, then said they would provide the parts later.

After a month of ghosting, I posted a 1-star review on DealerRater, and almost immediately got a call from the GM. The parts to fix were ordered pretty promptly.

No he shouldn't have, I would have done the same thing. Last summer my neighbor's pest control folks came to service their home and when they were finished they dumped their left over product out in the stones on my drive strip. I witnessed it and have it on my security cameras.

I lit into them and blistered their company on their website. They offered a year of free pest control and I had no interest. There was no excuse for doing that.

Same goes for the damage done to Slew's yard, you may let folks walk all over you, some of us won't.

Of course you agree with Slew. You're both Scream-At-The-Sky Liberals. Anti-business. Anti- responsibility. Pro screaming. Pro crying. Prop hissy-fitting.

The miscreant company deserved a chance to make it right before he smeared them. It's people like you and Slew who are the reasong that businesses in this country are closing down and leaving.

I find myself somewhere in the middle. On one hand, at least they are trying to resolve the issue. On the other hand, future potential customers deserve to know the experiences of previous customers.

Most sensible people understand things happen and will appreciate the fact the company is willing to right a wrong.

What damage occurred to your property due to that incident with the pest control company?

Bill

I'm all about private property rights, and respecting them. I also have common sense. Roofing is a messy business, it just is. Windy day? Yeah, I could see torn up shingles flying into the neighbor's yard. And I can see how the roofing company, unable to gain access to Slew's back yard, finally left. Was there any debris in the front yard? If not, then they obviously cleaned up what they could.

They should have at least left a note asking for contact so they could get a guy in there to pick up the debris and run a magnet sweeper in the back yard. Was it windy? Maybe they did leave a note and it blew off. Maybe they asked the client to pass their info to Slew, but since their relationship isn't good, the client-neighbor didn't do it. If the roofers didn't do any that, that was bad on the roofer's part. Still, I would have given the company an opportunity to clean it up before going on a crusade against them. I seriously doubt they went out of their way to fling debris into Slew's back yard.

Slew values his privacy, doesn't want people in his back yard, despite the fact that the roofing crew had a clear view of it for a day or two. OK, I respect that. Slew, because he wants no one in his yard, chose to clean it up himself. OK. So now he's just got a damage claim. So what do you want, Slew? 3 hours @ $ 33/hr = $ 100. 3 hrs @ $ 50 = $ 150, plus an apology that the roofer has apparently already given.

It also sounds like you and the neighbor aren't friends, or even on very good terms, even before this incident. That's the thing that concerns me most here.

Didn't have ants, roaches, and other bugs in that area for a while?

It's a weird scenario. One of the things we do is apply herbicides. As far as dumping product, I have questions. First, any kind of insecticide, herbicide, fungicide, etc. is going to be expensive. There would be no reason for anyone applying that stuff commercially to simply pour it out, off target. Why? That's like throwing money on the ground. We have used wetable powders that do tend to set up like concrete once the mechanical agitation ceases and the powder settles back at the bottom of the tank overnight. That stuff, we'd add additional water, and overspray the rinsate on the same area we just treated.

I can understand the pest control guys cleaning equipment, maybe washing out a backpack, then pouring out the rinsate, but say there was a gallon of rinse water......that would typically be poured on the treated area, or Hell, if I've mixed up insecticide to spay around the outside of the house, when I rinse out the backpack, if I spot an anthill, I'll dump the rinsate on it.

Maybe they did that, spotted an anthill on Taurus's driveway and thought they'd do a mitzvah by killing the mound? I don't know, I can't even fathom any other logical explanation, because again, nobody is just going to dump expensive product on the ground for no reason.

That's just stupid and typical, always the judge looking to make someone's actions into personality flaw. It would have been irresponsible to leave it sit making the damage worse while waiting for the company to deal with it. In addition not taking steps to mitigate the problem can weaken your position for damages if it went that far, you really don't get that?

As far as my yard, I don't use chemicals as my property has always been a chemical free zone. I don't need a couple gallons of pesticides dumped on my yard. I had to wash the rocks and change the ground cover they sit on. More because that's what I wanted than being necessary.

A few quick questions:

Do you agree that debris landing in a nearby yard during a roofing job is normal, or do you feel that it's intentional negligence?

If it's negligence, what practice SHOULD the roofers have used to prevent that situation? Maybe installing temporary netting, like at golf driving ranges? Should that be required when performing work in neighborhoods?

Finally, you're the contractor. Despite your best efforts, debris went into Slew's locked up back yard. What would you have done about it, specifically, since Slew and family were out of town for an extended period of time? You freely admit you caused the issue, whether it was simply a normal and customary part of the job, or you specifically had intentional negligence.

What do you do as the owner to rectify the situation?

You should have given him the chance to make good and let his people clean up the mess before you smeared him on the internet.

Why? This company already messed up the yard and didn't clean it up. What would have happened if Slew would have just "let it go". I would have told the guy the review STAYS up until there is not one shred of evidence even one nail landed in my yard.

And this is what you get for hiring illegal aliens. And don't tell me this crew was stacked with 20 year old white dudes. Not in this country.

It must suck to be a Biden voter and have that hanging around your neck, huh?

While they do not seem to mind wallowing in the stench of their own stupidity, they don’t want to be reminded of it.

Imagine wearing a dead, rotting skunk around your neck all day, every day and still expecting people to not avoid your society. It's probably close to that. The liberals in our golfing group finally got the message and wandered off - probably to form groups with other retards also wearing dead, rotting skunks around their necks. If they can find them.

Shoddy workmanship, my roofers put down tarps all around the house along with a dumpster in the driveway and I warned them right off that when that wind comes sweeping off the lake anything light will get airborne and blow all over. Especially when they did the boat house.

They did a bang-up job and made several sweeps of the yard when done with a long magnetic rod to snatch up any stray nails.

Damn! Are you jokers done yet?

Not until we have just a little more info.

That's why I want to know if they cleaned up the front, accessible yard. If they did that, they obviously were trying to clean up and were stumped by a locked gate that they didn't want to get around without express permission.

So what happened with the front yard, slewfoot? Cleaned up, or no?

:waiting:

If they were unable to do the job safely without impacting others they should have waited until an agreement was made before proceeding. What if it was your pets, kids or cars that had debris rained down on them?

And why do any of you think it was OK for their home grown food to be shit on? Some of you are totally clueless. :sadangel:

The difference between them and us is we can have a discussion without bringing it up every chance we get. They have no tolerance for anyone who doesn’t agree with them.

Wow thats significant. They must have been rushing like hell to do that.

Back about 1990 i needed a new roof on my suburban house. I got a recommendation from a friend at the gun club, the price was in the middle so I went with him. I'm a firm believer in most cases of throwing out the lowest price and highest price and use my construction knowledge and pick someone from the middle of the bids.

They laid tarps all over the place, had a ground man that kept the area good. When they were done they picked up every scrap and went at least twice with a magnet device..

Slew I know you were not home to see it but that picture you sent does not to me put that company in a good light!-:cert:

True, but I would expect a reputable contractor to make things right when given the chance, since they couldn't access the yard during the job.

I'm still waiting for both of you to answer a couple of questions. The first question, was the front, accessible yard picked up, was answered, so yes, yes it was. The problem focuses on the locked up back yard.
The pic posted mainly showed a piece of felt.....light weight, easy to blow a few feet over, especially if it's coming off a 2nd story roof.

The questions neither of you answered were, is that normal and expected on a roofing job, or do you feel the roofers were cheerfully laughing as they did frisbee throws of that felt trying to get it in Slew's yard.

And then, what was the contractor supposed to do about it once things did land in the back yard?

We all had roofs done after Hurricane Ike here, and neighbors just coordinated with each other to park cars in other driveways. When my neighbor's palms drop shit in my yard, I just pick it up and dispose of it, no problem. When my neighbor has trees close to the fence trimmed, I just tell the guys to shut the gate when they're done picking stuff up. We watch out for each other, several have keys to my home, I have keys to theirs. Helpful for taking care of pets, or if, God forbid, there's actually an emergency.

Slew doesn't seem to have that kind of relationship with this neighbor, and we don't know whose fault that is. The neighbor could have notified Slew and said, "hey leave me a key to the gate, so they can clean up anything that falls that way." That's what I would have done, and that probably would have eliminated the problem.

On an unrelated note, I agree with you that the thread seems to have turned very nasty. No reason for that. Everyone knows how everyone else feels at this point.

From the pic, looks like a few young tomato plants may have sustained injury, probably from having the Sun blocked for some amount of days. Maybe they had stems broken from the felt? Possible.

I agree that the roofing contractor should have cleaned up the mess. Assuming he had access, which apparently he did not.

Something tells me that Slew's JAP wife is who was/is offended by this and Slew's ire is based on her reaction not his own.

In a roundabout way, I built it because she wanted it & she maintains it.

[QUOTE=Bill;2259803]I'm still waiting for both of you to answer a couple of questions. The first question, was the front, accessible yard picked up, was answered, so yes, yes it was. The problem focuses on the locked up back yard.
The pic posted mainly showed a piece of felt.....light weight, easy to blow a few feet over, especially if it's coming off a 2nd story roof. /QUOTE]

On the picture provided its a tad bit more than a light weight roofing felt. I wonder if this is only the material left or if there was more and not provided by the OP

Looks like 15 lb felt (lightweight) and a few other scraps.

The big question is:
Was access to the ack yard restricted? If so a simple conversation with the neighbor would probably explain that they did not want to go in the backyard without permission and now that Slew is home he (the neighbor) will inform the roofing contractor that he can now come out and clean up.

Of course it was restricted. The place is almost a prison.

You should have given him the chance to make good and let his people clean up the mess before you smeared him on the internet.

maybe if they were a decent reputable company the issue would have never come up

And if they would have entered the OP’s fenced and locked rear yard they could be prosecuted for trespassing.

I'm wondering how slewfoot would be reacting now if he came home to find his back yard ALSO cleaned, if the roofers had simply jumped the fence to clean up and hauled the debris out, without express permission. Would there be complaints about that?

How would he know? :island14:

I'm guessing people with bars on the windows probably have security cams, too. Heck, some of my neighbors have security cams, too, and we don't have bars on our windows.

Or maybe some of his fledgling tomatoes had broken stalks, which led him to review the security footage to see how it happened? I don't know. I'm just wondering how he would feel if he knew they had gone in without permission.

We were running a forestry mulcher on a PPL ROW next to a house. If you've seen those, it's a messy business. We managed to have most of the chips fall on the ROW, but not all. So I had my guys stop and pick up all the debris from the open front yard, and when they were about done, I knocked on the door to see about accessing the back. I assume at least a little debris might have gone back there, over the fence.

Lady is VERY unpleasant. Why are you on my property? While it should have been evident, and there's no way she didn't hear our machine going full blast, I explained it all to her politely, told her we wanted to make sure her property was fully policed up. No, she wants all of us off her property NOW, she'll have her yard man check the back and clean it up, if necessary. OK, so I apologize again and we leave. Never heard anything back, so I guess she didn't make any complaints beyond telling us to GTFO. She stood outside glaring while we worked our way down the ROW, out of sight.

Like the lady our crew encountered, Slew seems pretty fervent about private property, not that there's anything wrong with that.

A few years ago, AT&T was installing fiber in their easement behind our houses. My newish at the time neighbor was out pitching a fit, because she didn't want to allow the crew to go through her gate to get to the easement. Somebody called the police, and AT&T supervisors showed up, and after a big pow wow that went on for a long time, she eventually let them in.

I pulled one of the guys aside and offered him my ladder to simply go over my fence, on the easement, eliminating the problem. By that time, I guess they all came to some kind of agreement and the issue was solved. Strangely enough, when I got fiber connected here sometime later, she apparently let them in her yard no problem, to hook me up....I guess their junction box is in her back yard.

Most people just use common sense and understand it's common practice to just let crews enter their property to gain access to their easements, but every once in a while, you get someone that wants to assert their rights, and they need to be respected, just like Slew.

We've put in a couple of low water crossings to get across ditches when were weren't allowed property access any other way. It happens.

I'm very polite with contractors, because I understand the position that they're in. I'll usually offer them water or Dr Pepper, if I have it on hand. Heck, several of the folks on my block, including me, will occasionally offer drinks to the garbage collectors if we're outside. Just courtesy.

Crazy. I have doors on my house that haven't been locked in years. Not only do we not lock our doors at night, the keys to every vehicle is sitting on the center console of that vehicle. Never had an issue.

Liberals, while always touting how they are for the little guy, the common man, in reality they look down their noses at contractors and tradesmen. And typically would never offer blue collar workers anything.

Same reason they have for decades made it clear that all American kids should go to college (especially white kids) and leave the trades and labor to the brown people.

I need to call my insurance company.

It appears one of the lawn workers left a 16oz plastic bottle in my yard.

I hope I'm covered.

This has been my life experience. Most of my extended family fits this description. They think they are brilliant and all-knowing. In actuality, they are white-collar snobs who believe in the Global Warming agenda, that Covid wasn't anybody's fault, and that electricity is clean and comes out of the wall naturally. None of them are pro America or American values and only one of them can change a flat tire (besides myself). We're talking 20-30 people. They value a person with a 6-year degree in underwater lesbian basket weaving as having more value than a tradesman or even a ditch digger. IMO, the more letters you have after your name, the less common sense you have.

I hope you'll recover. I hear it can be quite a traumatizing event. We've been having some wind here and the other day when I went to go into town, there was an empty plastic bag blown up against my gate. I threw it in the back of my truck and went on my way. When I got home, it was gone. I figure someone stole it out from the back of my truck. I didn't report it to my insurance because I didn't want a ding on my record.

Damn. No one respects other people's property anymore.

I forgot to mention, the bottle in my yard looked like it was stepped on. Who does that? :(

I did my best to salvage it. I ran it under hot water and blew some compressed air into it. The value is shot, but it may offer sentimental value if I can find the original owner. Maybe they just didn't want it anymore? They could have given it to a nice home or posted an ad or something. They just dumped it. Heartbreaking.
