View Full Version : Met Yet Another Ignorant Hypocrite Today

We were at a local bar, and a gal sat down next to us.

She seemed nice, and she was very pleasant. Mohawk, nose ring... She ordered the fish and chips. We struck up a conversation after she finished her meal, and she proceeded to tell us how she was a strict VEGAN.

WTF?

I ignored the fish she just ate, and asked how she managed to make sure her diet had enough protein. She told me how lentils had more protein per calorie than meat. I asked how she managed to make the lentils contain a complete protein. Did she add grains?

Blank stare.

I kid you not.

She then ordered a chocolate dessert that had milk (but she made sure it did not contain much of the hated animal product).

I left just shaking my head at the hubris, virtue signaling, hypocrisy, and general dumbassery.

If you are going to make a "stand" then make sure you actually believe what you practice and have at least the rudimentary knowledge about it.

I have a daughter who chose to become vegan. She’s weird but it’s genetic. She never cared for dead animal flesh as a kid. It took fortitude but she stuck to it and will probably never go back. It’s a commitment, she gets enough protein, and I’m proud of her. She’s more beautiful, happier and healthier than ever.

Edit: there’s a lot of judgy ignorant morons here and in the world in general. If someone wants to eat a pine cone let em eat a damn pine cone. Also stfu about eating pine cones.

She is a hypocrite who will use honey if a recipe calls for it. The only time she mentions it is to a server who, depending on the establishment, will modify menu items gladly. We don’t go to a steakhouse if we take her out for dinner. :)

that's the definition of a pagan religion. You do not follow it directly; instead you pick and choose certain aspects you personally want, and flat-out ignore other parts... but still proclaim you are a strict follower of the faith.

I have met over the years a few that claim to be strict Vegans. One thing is many always seem to bring the conversation around to that subject.

Here is one (now age 62) that would not start the subject but would join in the conversation!

She was a waitress and the funny thing is she worked for many years at the biggest steak house in the area. I asked her does it bother you delivering all this meat. She said no, but the hardest thing I'm asked to do is make a recommendation. She would say something like the queen cut prime rib is our biggest seller..

I never knew her to editorialize about the fact she was a none meat eater.

It's not whether someone is or isn't. It is whether they feel compelled to inform those around them. IDGAS about anyone's habits or lifestyle until they present it to me.

If your daughter is aggressive with those that aren't vegans, then what she is doing is wrong. If she lives her life her way, then good for her.

I’ll say it for her. She’s into it for herself and is not aggressive about it. Looks better, feels better, she’s healthier. She has to choose carefully what she eats and knows how to read nutrition labels. A lot of meat restaurants have vegan options these days for that person in a group but it’s usually an impossible burger. Some restaurants here have tasty meat and vegan dishes. Personally I don’t have to eat a dead animal for every meal. I like veggies.

At my age, I am about 4 decades from even bothering to speak to a mohawk or nose ring or sleeved up person. Regardless of their age, they are showing the world that they are living a hissy-fit, having an on-going tantrum, are 'rebelling' against something, have a 'statement' to make.

Sorry. Burnt out on all of that horseshit. If you go out of your way to deface yourself, I want nothing to do with you. Life is too short to deal with emotional cripples. :)

Is the OP ignorant -- yes, but a hypocrite? Probably not, just ignorant.

I've know several people IRL and online who aren't necessarily vegs, yet they think "meat" is only beef.

"Meat" was always assumed to be the flesh (muscle) of an animal. Pigs, chickens, lambs, deer, fish and other sea creatures are all animals -- they're not plants or minerals -- and their flesh is meat.

George Carlin: “Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.”

So the woman in the OP probably doesn't consider fish to be "meat." (is it a plant? A mineral?)

FWIW: My oldest sister (83) is mostly a veg and would be totally if her meat-and-potatoes husband wasn't there, who she cooks for. She is not a liberal -- she is apolitical -- and I'm not sure of this but I think she got brainwashed by reading and by the veg propaganda that's been out there for decades now.

There is a slaughterhouse just a mile or two from them and my BIL mentioned something about it a few years ago and my sister got pissed at him because he used the word "slaughter." :Jeff '79:

Americans are so spoiled, so comfortable, and so used to being surrounded by nutritious, fresh food at a cheap price (yes, it's still cheap, just not as cheap as it was) that we reject it and eat relatively un-nutritious plants instead.

I guarantee you that the first thing the freed Holocaust or Gulag victims wanted to eat was a chunk of meat -- not celery or broccoli -- and they were just driven by instinct, because their bodies knew what they needed.

A test for the skeptical -- I've never done this but I know what the answer would likely be:

Separate egg yolks from the whites and put them in separate dishes and put them out in the yard. Any opportunistic animal like crows, possums, etc. will find them at some point. They may sniff both dishes but will eat the yolks first because they instinctively know that most of the nutrition is in the yolks. They haven't been brainwashed (yet).

"It's not nice to fool Mother Nature."

Swing and a miss. The group you describe were 15-20 years older than me.

I was born in '61. A child in the '60's. Late boomer here. So I saw the mohawks and safetly pins first hand in the mid to late '70's in SF Bay Area clubs. I was THERE. And it was the same message. At age 17-20, I tolerated it. Never had a mohawk or pins myself. Went to some shows and clubs. Punk and New Wave was NEW. By 21 I was working at my career and all grown up. Not all of us. Stop getting your history lessons from the internet.

Me and all my buddies were all about girls, cars, motorcycles, and beer. I knew a few peeps who were hippies but was not close friends with them, and most of them moved on from their youthful endeavors.

I started working part time around 1964 and full-time from 1968 til I retired in 2021.

I was 22 when I had to get my first real job. Oh, sure. I had other jobs on summer breaks like being a bike mechanic and hauling produce, but my first real job out of college was at a Naval Shipyard. I got a haircut and cleaned my act up real fast. Welcome to the real world. :willy: Pretty much stayed in the Defense business and had retired military officers as bosses my entire life. I would enjoy that one for sure, but when I go/went out to a restaurant, I'd go with the chicken often and occasionally the salmon. If it was a special evening and the place made a good one, then Lamb Osso Bucco! Otherwise, I liked doing my own Ribeyes at home-lots of fat for flavor ...

I prefer meat when I go out and pay good money for it. I eat plenty of chicken :ack: and fish at home. She’s my daughter. I make exceptions. When we cook we ensure there’s vegan options if she’s around. Who wouldn’t.

Chicken is gross. I like when you bite into a piece and there’s a vein in it. Yummy veins.

I did not know he was a boomer, but he seems a little confused on the math. He asked how many boomers were druggies "in the 60s", implying that a ton of us were. But since the oldest baby boomers turned 23 in '69, and less than half of boomers were over the age of about 14 in '69, it's hard to imagine very many boomers were the ones tripping out at Woodstock and the like.

Had no dad so my 5 brothers and sisters and me worked at a donut shop my mom ran. They were between 16-20 years old and i was 9. I didn't get paid but i work just as hard. They made me stay in the back cleaning and making boxes fore the donuts. Then my mom married my step dad who ran a janitorial service. I worked Friday and Saturday from 5 pm to 4 am and 5 pm to 4 am Monday through Friday during the summer. Used a buffer stripped the floors waxed them and clean toilets, etc etc. Never got paid. Why hire someone when you get me for free. Did that from age 12-15. My first paying job at 15 1/2 i got $1.65 an hour. within 5 month i got a raise to $ 2.00 an hour I felt like Donald Trump.

Damn. I was making $9/ hour in 1975, driving a '61 Chevy pickup and moving furniture.

Holy Carp. That's $52 per hour in 2024 dollars. Total baller.

I was making $5.20 in '79, and that at the time was an actual living wage. IIRC, minimum wage was about $2.65 then.

Of course you make what your daughter will choose to eat,who wouldn't for their kid ? We wish our son was still here to cook for and we would cook anything our daughter would want.

But...I do like chicken, and like Jim Morrison said
You men eat your dinner, eat your pork and beans
I eat more chicken than any man ever seen.....:funnier:

I would enjoy that one for sure, but when I go/went out to a restaurant, I'd go with the chicken often and occasionally the salmon. If it was a special evening and the place made a good one, then Lamb Osso Bucco! Otherwise, I liked doing my own Ribeyes at home-lots of fat for flavor ...

C+ maybe B- depending on what it looks like inside. :D

Back then you couldn't get a "real" job unless your parents were poor, because of CETA. So a friend's mom formed a little business moving furniture for apartment dwellers in and around Boston. As soon as I got my driver's license we started. We charged $27/ hour for the team, cash only. She paid for the truck, insurance, fuel, maintenance, advertising, took the calls and made the schedule. Craig and I did the physical work, collected the cash, and Since I was a year older did all the driving. We split the cash three ways evenly.

My friends that did manage to get "real" jobs were making minimum wage, which I recall was $3.15.

Did that for three years. After my first year of college I got a job in my field as a draftsman and was making $5/ hour. :Jeff '79:

I have a daughter who chose to become vegan. She’s weird but it’s genetic. She never cared for dead animal flesh as a kid. It took fortitude but she stuck to it and will probably never go back. It’s a commitment, she gets enough protein, and I’m proud of her. She’s more beautiful, happier and healthier than ever.

Edit: there’s a lot of judgy ignorant morons here and in the world in general. If someone wants to eat a pine cone let em eat a damn pine cone. Also stfu about eating pine cones.

The STFU part is what I'm looking for from every ****ing Vegan on the earth. Including your daughter. Let her know for me, would ya? There's a fine chap!

I've tried that vegan or plant-based stuff, most of the time by accident at a sample table.

It's not good at all and leaves an after taste like diet drinks.

I can’t believe I read this entire post. What the hell are you babbling about.

Chicken is awesome. Trim that nasty stuff off of it and go to town. This was my dinner last night. Kung Pao. The freshly ground Sichuan peppercorns make it both delicious and authentic. My mouth was still tingling an hour later.

Chickens are gross creatures. The way they’re raised is more gross and borderline if not actually criminal. I eat it and it can be delicious. But you never know, you might still get a bite of a gummy vein. Ham too. But don’t worry, I’m not going vegan. I do understand why people would vegan simply from an animal cruelty perspective.

Chickens are cool. We have six of them. They have a palace for a coop and I built them an 8' x 24' run attached to it. Also built them a 5' x 10' chicken tractor that gets placed in a different spot in a field each day. They love going out in their chicken tractor. My wife feeds them organic chicken feed, cabbage, cucumbers, blue berries, and watermelon every day. The eggs are amazing and we average 5 to 6 eggs a day from them.

Methinks you know not what a baby boomer is.

I think you do a lot more assuming than you do thinking. You obviously read this post of mine:

I did not know he was a boomer, but he seems a little confused on the math. He asked how many boomers were druggies "in the 60s", implying that a ton of us were. But since the oldest baby boomers turned 23 in '69, and less than half of boomers were over the age of about 14 in '69, it's hard to imagine very many boomers were the ones tripping out at Woodstock and the like.

since you responded to it with your cute little chart. Are you denying that the oldest baby boomers were turning 23 years old in 1969? If so, please show your math as your chart shows boomers being born in 1946-1964. If not, what is it that causes you to "methinks" that I don't know what a boomer is?

Hint: I am a baby boomer. :yesnod:
