Keeping the outside yard (20'x20') cleaned up and failing at growing grass. Every time I got a nice lawn going, we'd trample it down playing on it....

When I was old enough to be safe I mowed the lawn/raked and the usual help out around the house stuff. During the winter I ran our snowblower and hand shoveling in the brutal winters Northern NY got in the 60s. Dad owned 2 houses on a corner lot so with the parking area and sidewalk there was a lot to do. It was our business (funeral home) and dad was a stickler on keeping it well maintained.

When free I worked the door and helped arrange the cars for the funeral procession to the church and cemetery.

As dad was useless on mechanical things I worked with a family friend and did a lot of work on the second house (Two family) Learned enough at that theirs no way in hell would I invest in rental property! I could have taken over the business but I just did not dig it. Worked as a laborer for a few years and many years as a pipefitter/welder)

Mowed neighbor's yards and pulled weeds, hauled trash, etc. for extra money for my model airplane and mini-bike hobbies. And to buy ammo for my airguns.

I was an only child. I did the snow shoveling until Dad got a snow blower then HE WANTED to do it. I cut the grass. I WANTED to do more as my Dad worked like 60 hrs a week. But certain things he WANTED to do as he was fussy about the house the yard etc. I always enjoyed hard work and seeing the results -

The rear of the back yard was a buncha scrub trees, briars, and thick honeysuckle vines, and it was decided that it would be a good spring break job for me to clean it up when I was around 13 or 14.
That idea had to be squashed immediately, I told mom I could do it in one day.
A can of lighter fluid, a little gasoline, and some old clothes and rags, and an area about 100 x 30 went up in a flash.
Using a lawn mower/machete was never mentioned.
I got in major trouble.
I didn't see why, the job got done.

one summer on a visit to my cousin's place in Cleveland Ohio, then an 8 hr trip from Wash DC region.....my uncle who was an EE for ATT, he had me replace the pix tube and repair his TV in the living room....

so I did, my Dad and he were impressed.....talking mid 60's time frame....

This in addition to working as a carpenter’s helper on weekends and several days a week in the summer.
The chores began as young as I can remember, maybe 5/6 years old.
The carpenter work began at 8 years old.

I have been working pretty much my entire life. Probably why at 64 I keep going. It’s odd to most people but I don’t know any other way.
And yes it is slowly killing me.

We had to keep our rooms clean. We had chores on Saturday like cleaning different rooms in the house or dusting or helping with the garden or flower beds. We had normal chores like taking out the garbage. In the summer, we took turns vacuuming the pool.

My mom was a stay at home mom when we were younger, so the house stayed clean. The expectation was that we cleaned up after ourselves and kept it that way. Our chores were whatever needed to be done. We did help out with making dinner, too.

My dad was particular about the lawn. We weren’t allowed to mow it. :funny:

Water the beds and a huge garden
Weed the garden
Shovel the front porch/steps in winter
Feed the dog
Pick stones (50 acres - absolutely the WORST job)
For a decade: change the trays (wood chips) and feed the 500 Chinchillas my Dad decided to raise - this happened weekly and took me and my brother a solid 4 hours every Saturday


Those were the everyday stuff. The other stuff:

Polish all the classic cars (10 of 'em)
Help change the oil on all cars
Maintain my go-kart
Help planting/harvesting the crops (50 acre farm)
Help putting up snow fence in the fall
Help Dad rebuild the 427 in my Dad's 68 Vette
Help remove heavy snow build up on the roof of the house in big snow winters
Help with brake jobs on all cars

But, my most important job was making myself look busy, or even more jobs would be added at the drop of a coin.

For this, my brother and I were paid $10/week. Saved almost every penny of it.

We used to have one of those buried garbage cans for kitchen waste. It was a maybe a ten gallon galvanized paid with a handle nested into a concrete cylinder and accessed through a cast iron cover, hinged with a step opposite of the cover to open it. A local farm used the garbage to feed pigs.

Not to be confused with the 40 gallon steel trash cans.

It was my job to load the thing and keep it clean. Flies would lay eggs in it and one time it was literally frothing with maggots. ****ing disgusting.

One time I went to load it to find two eyes looking up at me- a huge racoon. After that we stopped using it.

It's a rather sad statement about the creative content in here. I'm bored, and I'm try to stoke the fire a little, and get some back and forth going. I want to encourage intelligence, not an endless dialogue of unnecessary curses and seemingly drunken meanderings in type. People share their life experiences, people learn from them, and people pass them on to others. That's what this, and all forums should proudly showcase in "print". If you feel you aren't as educated as some, then step up your game and educate yourself. Learn some new vocabulary words(look them up). Practice your spelling, and teach your kids and spouse. Strive to learn and be your potential better educated self. Ignorance is not bliss, nor should it be lauded. Welcome other points of view that differ from your own, and see both or multiple sides of an issue before you default to defending your current self-state of mind. Grow!

Yard Work ~ Side Discharging Ricocheting Rocks and Pebbles in the Eyes was and added bonus when running the power mower as an 8 year old back behind the garage in the alley

Getting to operate the Vacuum was presented as a Privilege to use a Power Tool

Washing Cars followed by a distinct pleasure of drinking from the hose

Trimming and picking up the Trimmings form the Thorny Sticker Bushes was instilled as a " Character Building " experience

Scapping peeling Lead Based Paint was also right of passage

Cleaning up Paint Brushed was an Introduction to the Aromatic Fumes of Turpentine ~

I never did any dusting or mopping etc, all my stuff was outside. I also didn't get an allowance like my sisters did for doing chores. But once I began helping dad on the job sites I was earning the big bucks...twenty-five cents an hour. :woohoo:

Opposite here. My older sisters never seemed to have to do anything while I had to mow the large lawn with a push mower, rake and burn leaves, weed the garden, and do any painting that needed to be done. And, if that weren't' bad enough, my mom's best friend owned a farm and my mom would loan me out to her during baling season. I would spend four or five days of my summer holiday living at these people's house and working from dawn to dusk. And I never received a dime for it either. In the winter, I had to keep the driveway shoveled and all the sidewalks. We had heated sidewalks, but I was promised a lingering and painful death if I ever so much as went near the switches.
