What would this be called ? It’s a makeup table of some sort

Armoire. But the way the center hinges up and has a compartment, as well as no recess for a chair or stool (like a desk) I suspect this may be a bar or a sideboard. Is the compartment in the middle deep enough for bottles or decanters?

I would say more of a clothing storage make-up slash writing table.:seasix:

That center compartment is for makeup, as the lid opens up with a mirror , it’s reflecting our stone pillar in the picture

So it's very shallow, then. Most bars of the '20's through '60's had a mirror that folded up when you opened the lid. Yeah, with the depth looking like 5 inches or less, definitely not a bar but an armoire.
Here’s a closeup. I suppose it could be for shaving as well. It’s a more masculine chest than for a woman.
It's a woman's dresser. Butt ugly because of the mix of plain sawn and quarter sawn.
This is similar .. I like the price
Dresser/Armoire for man or woman. I could see storing clothes in the drawers, and using the mirror to tie a bow tie or comb your hair. Probably not shaving, as there would be a basin in place, and the piece is not pre 1900, IMO. Very nice piece. Judging by the hardware I would say 1950's-'70's. I don't think it's butt ugly. But then again, I don't think Yadkin is Cary Grant, either.

I would say jewelry or makeup before shaving. I’m not a fan of a dry shave.
It had it's place in history, and it's butt ugly by today's standards. If I were you I'd ditch it for whatever you can get, and purchase something more contemporary to fill that space. If you want to stick with antiques, go 18th century France.
Stick to what you know----heckling that bald Jewish guy. :)

Sounds right.... Lots of drawers; the WH may be interested for an antique addition to the oval office; its getting harder and harder to hide cocaine there anymore.

If you step back a minute, to the time when you were a kid or I was, would blow jobs and snorting cocaine in the oval office have been OK, as it is today? The norm? Not even worth news coverage or investigation? Just move along?
Or having presidents who have been convicted of plagiarism? Or who have lied openly to their constituents? Weaker in character than the one dumb shit in your class you knew was going to end up in prison?
A president who is a liar, has called 50% of the population 'terrorists', has been pumping illegal aliens and fentanyl over the border, and who's rally cry is :"If you don't vote for me, you ain't black!".
If someone told you in the 5th grade that this is how our country would be in 2020, you'd have called them a liar. But here we are.
It's not for makeup OR shaving. Every woman I've been close to puts on her makeup sitting down, at a vanity, sometimes in the car using the passenger vanity mirror for touch ups. Men are going to stand while shaving, but they're going to do it over a sink, or even back then, a bowl with soapy water. No one is going to shave and get the hair all over that dresser, or on the floor.
Most likely, it's designed for men, so they can look and see if their tie is straight.

Nope, it's called a vanity. Can be used for either ladies or gentlemen.
It just happens to be built somewhat like a secretary.
An armoire is a full-sized cabinet that basically replaces what we call closets, nowadays.
My father spent thousands of dollars on these structures, but they were riddled with termites and had poor structural stability. In 1985, he attempted to sell many of them but could only get 35-50% of the original price.
My advice, save your money or DIY your cabinets.

Maybe I haven't been "close to" enough women, but I can tell you that my wife puts on her make-up standing up in the bathroom mirror over the sink.
I stand while shaving, but it's in the shower, not over a sink.
Either my wife and I are "weird", or you're painting with a remarkably broad brush. I have a guess which it is. :yesnod:

I shave in the shower, too. Point still stands that men aren't going to shave sitting down. As to the wimmenz......I gave my anecdotal experience and extrapolated. If we had more VB ladies here, maybe it would be worthy of a poll. I'd still bet most women sit down to put on their makeup, the whole point of vanities and little benches. I could be wrong.

The vast majority of women now put their make-up on standing up leaning over the sink to see the mirror.
A vanity is an anachronism throwing back to when upper crust "ladies" had maids. Oh, and dressing gowns. They wore the dressing gowns when changing between morning dress, afternoon receiving garb to receive callers, and then dressing for dinner. They sat there and let the maids dress them and put the appropriate jewelry on.

We have a built-in vanity in our old wreck of a home. Like a desk with drawers where you can put all the junk, sit down and put on the pretty face, blow dry hair or whatever they do. She uses it. Probably the exception.

I am also cultured enough to know that "Mademoiselle Mick" would imply my daughter, not my wife.

Yep. I got it mixed up. And I have a 1930's Armoire in the spare bedroom that I've had 30+ years so I should have known better. Armoires were used in homes before closets were standard. Thanks!!:seasix:

Figured this would be the thread to put this.
I took this from my mother’s house, and it somehow has the leg broken off.
That looks like an easy unnoticeable fix because it attaches underneath where nobody will ever see.
I would like to find an antique restoration place that can make some new small leaf pieces on the bottom that have broken off.
Are there any such places that can do that?
