View Full Version : Apparently, I am STILL a BIG THING in Miami

Yep, last night again confirmed I am STILL HUGELY in Miami!!

Had to take the wifey to MIA (Miami Int'l Airport) last night, as she is headed to Denver to hang out on the slopes with daughter #2; told her not to call me if she ends up in The ER.

Been a while since I been to MIA, as FLL way more efficicent, and closer, but wifey needed a cheap ticket, flying Frontier, does not get much cheaper than that.

Drive is 47 miles from the homestead, left at 6 PM, traffic SUCKED BALLS, took almost 1.50 hours, BUT based on the number of drivers beeping at me, and the even greater number flashing me 'You're #1' hand signs, I am still remembered AND revered; it also appears many were shouting encouragement to me, but I cannot lipread.

Many more examples of this on the drive down vs. return trip, as drive down required top-tier driving skills, and many amateurs in my path were given lessons.
The drive home may have contained an equal amount of adoration, but I missed much, as jumped in the express lanes on I-95 North and probably passed 20K sitting in standstills, and at 85+ MPH it was difficult to look over to my fanbase.

I return on Tuesday, early AM, to get the wifey, I am hoping for a similar reception, as obviously I have been missed!!

And some of you thought I was on a downslide,,,

What's up with the dog?

Ringo's momma, my daughter #2, says she is taking him to Denver soon, I cannot argue this one, her dog; she will do so when she buys a house in the next few months.

Dolly will be devastated, as 2 years old now and only knows life with Ringo.

So, plan is to get an Aussiedoodle next month, as Dolly deserves, and needs, a companion dog.

I am also thinking about getting a third dog, as it not much more work than two, considering a GSD.

American Air jet clipped Frontier Jet on Miami International Airport tarmac
miami

Updated on: March 8, 2024 / 10:45 AM EST / CBS Miami

MIAMI - Two flights out of Miami International Airport were delayed Thursday evening after one of the planes clipped the other.

As an American Airlines jet was backing up around 8:30 p.m. it hit a Frontier Airlines jet. In a video post on Only in Dade, an airport employee can be seen running on the tarmac to stop the American plane from continuing to back up.

After impact, the American jet had damage to its vertical stabilizer, and the Frontier jet had damage to its tail where the vertical stabilizer went into it, leaving a hole. Both planes will likely be out of commission for several weeks as they are repaired.

"During pushback from the gate in Miami (MIA), the wing tip of American Airlines flight 929 with service from MIA to São Paulo (GRU) made contact with the tail of a parked aircraft. Customers deplaned normally and the aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this caused," said American in a statement.

It wasn't the traffic that was the threat, it was the pavement apes. All night long, gunshots and sirens. I figured the Vette would be lucky to survive the night in the parking lot. :willy:

More pavement apes than ever, you have to know where you are at, and where you are going.

I only go to the airport, the port and the arena, BUT I also know where not to drive.
Miami has some of the greatest neighborhoods in American, AND also some of the most deadly.

Okay, I am done with MIA, any family member that flies in or out of there will have to pay for a car service.

Today, wife was scheduled to come in on redeye from denver at 7 AM, she had a checked bag so I figures I could leave the house at 6:15 and pick her up curbside at 7:45.

So, after a shit night of sleep, maybe four hours, I am on the road at 6:15 AM, cruising down the FL Turnpike with light traffic, THEN, two miles from getting on 95 south I hit a HUGE WALL of traffic, bumper-to-bumper for all two miles.

Then when I finally go through the spaghetti bowl to 95 south it is another parking lot, and I cannot get over to the express lanes, which were also a parking lot.

I finally get to MIA at 8:15 AM, TWO DAMN HOURS, what a shitshow, that town has issues, they are out of land to make more lanes so there are truly effed!!

The ride home should be easier, WTF am I kidding, only 35 miles, but every damn road, the Palmetto and 75 north is SHIT, took me an hour and forty-five minutes.

So basically I spent four hours driving this morning, never again, and eff MIA and Miami, they suck, and I see no way it gets better.

Lesson here is to buy some land near Larry, as this traffic takes a toll on you--damn good pun.

Lastly, those two doggies, no damn loyalty, once the wifey went through the door after her four-day vacation, they forgot all about me,,, I will be witholding the beef jerky treats!!

I have lived here since 1968, still remember when I-95 was not complete in Broward, and that 95 north ended at PGA.
It has gotten much worse in the last 10+ years, and as a rule I try never to go west off 441, AND my #1 rule is to avoid I-95 in the tri-county, as it is NEVER a clear shot, and I have been caught in MANY 1+ hour standstills.

95 in Broward is a ****ing disgrace, 5 lanes at some points with 2 of the 5 being express lanes, that is some real BS!!

I drove to the Kaseya Center beside Bayside from Ft Lauderdale last week at rush hour. Just glad I wasn't going north. :)

How Frequent Are I-95 Accidents in South Florida?
When it comes to I-95 accidents, South Florida takes the lead. According to a March 2022 report in the Miami New Times, a research firm analyzed two decades of data and identified a one-mile section of I-95 in Fort Lauderdale as the deadliest mile in America. Shockingly, this mile witnessed nearly 50 times the number of fatal crashes compared to the average highway mile across the nation. This finding undoubtedly makes I-95 in Florida the most treacherous highway based on this criterion alone.

The deadliest mile stretch lies between I-595 and State Road 84 in Broward County. However, it’s crucial to note that I-95 is considered significantly dangerous, with over 200 accidents occurring along its length each year. In fact, it holds the unfortunate title of being the second most hazardous highway in the country (Broward Palm Beach New Times).

The FLHSMV reports that some of the highest fatality totals in Florida occur in southern and central counties along I-95. This includes Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. For example, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) discloses that in 2021 alone, Broward County experienced a staggering 41,376 crashes. Among these accidents, nearly 24,000 resulted in injuries; tragically, 263 lives were lost.

I get to drive that "one mile stretch" several times a week.

When we arrived there in the late 80’s there were only a few thousand residents. Including zero minorities. And a lonely beach.
Now the place is overdeveloped and overrun with less than desirable people.
The beach is still ok but not as nice as it was before Hurricane Opal where a lot of beach and huge dunes were wiped out. And the beach vendors have fubard the beach with chair and water-sports rentals.

I avoid I-95 and I-595 in Broward, too many aholes, none know traffic rules.
Every damn road in Miami is hell, 95 sucks 24/7, regardless of North or South, just too many damn people.

I have not been to a Heat game in three years, as will not deal with the traffic.
Last time I went we parked under the arena, not bad for $100, as they shoot you east to the tunnel entrance that puts you on 95 North, saves you about 45 minutes in bumper-to-bumper grind around the arena.

Gets worse every year, as:

1) NE people keep moving here
2) Those who visit stay longer
3) china virus is gone, more vacationers
4) cruise ports, MIA and FortL, are busy again
5) Those who were once snowbirds are now permanent

Usually she can get a convenient flight out of FLL, this time she could not, had to go with MIA.
I would not allow her solo in an uber, hired car is $100+ each way.
This is the last time she flies in /out of MIA, as no one should have to deal with that traffic.

Thanks, did not realize MIA has a Tri_rail station, looks like under $10; says trip is 70 minutes from Deerfield.

Will probably not use, as even though Spirit stopped FLL-DEN service, United offers at least two non-stops daily, pricing may be 50% more, but worth it to avoid MIA.
American also offers non-stops daily.

THANKS AGAIN!!

Gets worse every year, as:

1) NE people keep moving here
2) Those who visit stay longer
3) china virus is gone, more vacationers
4) cruise ports, MIA and FortL, are busy again
5) Those who were once snowbirds are now permanent
6) None the above know how to drive, nor do the locals
7) Everyone here loves their car, as mass transit is a joke
8) NO ONE works, so everyone driving to stores and restaurants

Sounds like a dream destination. :D

Thank Goodness you have 1200 HP under the hood to deal with it!:seasix:

I rented a Corvette for a week a few years ago when I was there visiting my Dad. There was never an opportunity to open it up. Passing lanes were always full of Floridiots in minivans, Escalades and commercial vehicles hauling trailers.

When I was younger visiting my family in Hawaii, I was always tempted to rent one of the Ferrari's or Maserati's from the exotic car rental places. Same deal. You'd see these posers in bumper to bumper traffic, slipping the clutch in first gear, or revving up in neutral to hear the pipes, with NO place to go. The last 7 years or so, I didn't even rent a car. Took the bus or walked. Much better.

Two obvious problems here:
1) you do not possess CORVETTE driving skills
2) you do not possess FLORIDA driving skills

Result should have been expected.
