I'm in a conservative county, at least for the moment. So our cops weren't called on to harass barbers keeping their shops open, or bust moms taking their kids to the park, or harass families trying to eat at restaurants, or bust people for not wearing masks, etc. And I've had some good encounters with our local cops....professional, all, and in one instance both professional and caring going above and beyond, IMHO. Even the one video of our cops stopping a black lady for speeding that made the news.....even her own family and the usual race baiters had nothing to say about the way our police handled it. My only critique would have been, for the amount of resources they used on that call, the original cop should have just let the screaming, out of control woman go.

That said, I certainly wouldn't see police in general as trusted resources, especially in other jurisdictions. From the ubiquitous body cam footage available these days, we see plenty of bad behavior by cops. Look at the SWAT raiders for the J6 political prisoners, people praying at abortion clinics, etc. They terrorized whole families, all for people both non violent, and never been in trouble with the law before.

You can see videos of cops being heavy handed for no reason, for retaliating against people for exercising their civil rights, enforcing bullshit government edicts, and certainly showing up when called and making things much worse.

I would feel comfortable calling my local department if I needed help, but I wouldn't trust any OTHER department. I'd view them as snakes....at best, not poisonous, but I couldn't trust them not to bite me. I'm sure there are good cops in most departments, but unless you know who you're dealing with, it's best to beware and have as little interaction with them as possible.

It's why I wear a seat belt now, after decades of virtually never wearing one. And being more anal about checking lights, not letting the car tag expire, keeping the speed down, etc. I don't want to give any reason to have an interaction with a cop.

On foot, however, I feel comfortable talking to them out in public, say, in line at the Quickie Mart, or when they're doing security at the rodeo or other such event.

I think on this one the courts might be the right judge. Definitely not now before a trial. She may have described the guy to a tee, and they are still gathering evidence to physically connect him to the spot.
