At a jobsite years ago the next door neighbor's female pit had a litter, one pup left. The mother killed the puppy by grabbing its neck and violently swinging the poor puppy back and forth. I told the owner, she was going to kill it, so he put the puppy inside that one day.

The very next morning the puppy laid dead, as the mother threw it around the yard....

They are not smart. Pits are simple, being able to train them to simply not eat certain people doesn't mean they're smart.
I've trained seals, they exhibited smartness by solving problems creatively.
