This morning I made the 20 minute drive to the county seat to make four short stops. One the way there, a 20 vehicle convoy of oversized loads and construction equipment was snaking it's way in the opposite direction. It had collected an entourage of cars about a mile long during it's trip through two lane mountain roads. Amazingly, I was not one of them.

An hour after returning, the county alert system reported a vehicle on its roof, and my prior route closed completely.

I must be living right. :Jeff '79:

I went to Costco at 6am to get gas. About a half hour later leaving Home Depot nearby, I drove back past Costco and the lines were really long!

Phew! Dodged a bullet on that one! :p

Yesterday I was coming home from lunch and was on a narrow, hilly country road.

Right at the base of a steep hill was a car and truck in front of me with their 4-ways on, and a tractor in front of them hauling a wagon loaded with logs.

He was going 5 FREAKING MPH. Holy carp, my 72 year-old tractor will go 12. But he was likely in a lower gear to get up the hill.

So finally we got on the flat and he didn't go any faster, but there was an open stretch of road, long enough to pass someone going 5 MPH so I swung out and easily passed all three.

The car that was ahead of me with his flashers on, who I though was part of the train, then decided to follow me. I guess they were scared of the double solid line.

Once, coming home from a long hard day at the grind, I was half a mile from my house and had to turn around because a tour bus got itself jammed on a one-way bridge and they had to get one of those huge wreckers in to try to yank it off. Had to drive 20 miles out of my way to come in from the other side. That bus had no business being on those back roads and certainly should have never tried to cross that bridge.

When I got up to our farm this morning, I drove around the closed gate and in to the property.

Saved me countless seconds and I didn’t have to get out of the truck to open the gate.

How freaking lucky am I? :D

In Florida, where all the smart people reside, convoys and road construction are only done during evening hours.

This is an ongoing project, more flyovers planned, I-95 and I-595 and the FL Turnpike.
No lane closures during the day, on-budget, on-time.

Also, all downtown construction done at night.
This is for Downtown Fort Lauderdale, more than 50 30+ stories towers going up in the next five years, all construction shuts down at sundown, transporting of beams and materials can be scheduled for the PM.

Broward County builds more in a day than your state builds in a decade.

If you want to retire at age 30 with a gazillion dollars, build:
1) bridges
2) tunnels
3) interchanges
4) metro airports
5) container ports

A little off-topic.
When Long Island roadway system was laid out, those with power purposely built the road overpasses with low clearances.
The reason you will be told is than they did want trucks, boxed and trailers, to have access to the their roads.
The real reason, some say, was to disallow bus routes, as they did not want lower income residents in their towns.

Road maintenance = they run the grader down the road each April to smooth everything out. That's it.

You mean burn the shreddings?

I bought a shredder some months ago. I'm done shredding in the house, but there's a lot to go from the shop. I have all expense receipts and income stubs from 36 years in business. There's a lot.

I had originally planned on burning all the shredding. But the "newer" shredders also cut them sideways so it's just a bunch of maybe 1/8 x 1/8 pieces. They pack so tight they won't really burn, just kinda smolders.

So I've been putting them in garbage bags and taking them to the dumps (free). I don't do it every day, I'm just starting my 4th bag.

My last shredder crapped out while we were downsizing/ moving. I took the remainder to my UPS store, where I have had a mailbox for the last 25 years, and had them shred it.

Now we fill a shoebox with crumpled paper that needs secure disposal. When the box is full, I take it outside, pour a little waste oil on the paper then light it up. :seasix:
