View Full Version : The official VBOT "Look at me" thread

Have you ever done or bought something cool but don't want to be like that guy who starts a new thread every time he buys a roll of toilet paper? Or your unsure if your achievement is thread-worthy? Or your real friends or wife just aren't giving you enough kudo's so you have to resort to your pretend friends here at VBOT for a pat on the back?

Well you've come the the right place.

I'll start...

My shop is hotter than hell in the summer. Even with all six doors open and a breeze blowing through and the 14' fan going full blast, it's hotter in the shop than outside. It can't be good for the cars or my tools. Last week, I had an HVAC system installed and starting today, the insulation goes in. My shop hasn't been this empty since it was built.

What r-value insulation are you using? We used the cheapest option when we had our shop built....it does make a difference, even the minimal amount. If you're going to put your shop under air, it makes sense to put in the best insulation available.

I did. That was the original plan when I built it, but it looked too pretty to ugly it up with spray foam. If I have to look at ugly, I figured I might as well be comfortable while doing so. Plus, heat will minimize the freeze risk to the plumbing.

Typically those red iron buildings have vinyl wrapped fiberglass insulation between the steel frame and the metal siding and roofing.
At this point spray foam is probably the best option.

20 on the walls, 28 on the ceiling. If the AC can't keep up, I can add more in a few years. By then, I'll probably need to clean it again anyway.

I think when he said his net worth was 65k back in 2022, he was including the Mustang and the Donzi and also that older diesel pickup truck and his down payment on Shitts Creek.

Personally, I don't think he has enough coin to pay the first and last deposit on an apartment.

One 5 Ton. I'm aware it's marginal for that volume. 2850 ft^2 conditioned space.

:nono: F-350. '74 Super Camper Special. 460 cid. The back axle is rearward and the spare goes in a hatch on the passenger side. Dual batteries and slide in camper connections in the bed. Frame is slightly narrowed to fit the tire. I'm considering a frame off and engine rebuild on it beginning sometime this year. Step son got it in Utah for $500. I was always doing the work on it so I convinced him to sell it to me and he can drive it when he visits. I think naming cars is faggotry but he called it the Guacamole Express and I kind of like it. Some commercial HVAC engineering calls for one ton per 500 sq ft. But that’s usually for public spaces/retail where doors are constantly opened and a lot of people.

I think in a shop the idea is to keep the temperature comfortable when you’re working in there. And as important to keep the humidity down to protect the tools and equipment.

Pablo, Pepe and Pedro are doing a great job and are putting in more than the boss man said they would. The walls were supposed to be 6". The purlins are 8"; I'm going to have to shave it to get my pegboard back up. They worked 'til 7 tonight.

They did a nice job masking everything too.

Get one of those over the air antennas. I have one in the horse barn and can get 28 stations.

Dammit, you just said the S word and battery pack. That's like opening a can of tuna in front of a cat for that guy. He'll be trying to talk me into a T car. I've looked into it but even if I do it myself, the payoff isn't great @ ~$0.08/kWh. It won't be running full blast 24/7. Maybe average $50-75/mo.

I was just going by your statement that you'd run it continuous for your cars. I know Texas heat. During summer when the sun goes down, the ground starts baking you releasing day heat. Install a heat pump and be comfortable year around at pretty near 0 cost after installation. But yeah, 8 cents a Kwh is pretty hard to beat.
With a battery pack, you can have backup power in case of an outage as well.

They are doing a great job on the foam. But still think you will be a bit short on the tonnage but time will tell. Have you looked into the Mr. Cool heat pumps? It could take the edge off at high temperatures and take over at night or lower temperature. :seasix:

And for entertainment and Internet they make some pretty good extenders. I use them at some of my places for security and game cameras. :kimblair:

:nono: F-350. '74 Super Camper Special. 460 cid. The back axle is rearward and the spare goes in a hatch on the passenger side. Dual batteries and slide in camper connections in the bed. Frame is slightly narrowed to fit the tire. I'm considering a frame off and engine rebuild on it beginning sometime this year. Step son got it in Utah for $500. I was always doing the work on it so I convinced him to sell it to me and he can drive it when he visits. I think naming cars is faggotry but he called it the Guacamole Express and I kind of like it. I won't be cutting my balls off anytime soon, though.

Very nice! Your son got a good deal on that truck.

It's not final decision, but first things first. I go through a summer and see what happens. I'll probably run the system full time, but not necessarily at comfortable working temperatures unless I'm working. Just enough to control moisture. The system is a heat pump with booster strips for heat.

When she's not making me sammiches, she sweeps the floor and cleans up after me. She's a keeper for sure.

 As a bit of a truck camper and classic car fan, I've had thoughts of pairing one of these up with a nice classic truck camper, but the reality is classic truck campers in nice shape are extremely rare and I don't think driving one of these trucks long distance would be very comfortable or relaxing. It would be super cool, but I probably wouldn't use it enough to make it worth while.

Unicorns actually, and without modern space utilization. Would not want to take it on a long trip, especially with currently no AC. After I cleaned out the rear gas tank and replaced the midship tank, I only use the midship tank and keep the other one dry.

One 5 Ton. I'm aware it's marginal for that volume. 2850 ft^2 conditioned space.

Truck is too solid and original to do a frame off. They're only original once. Restore it and the history is wiped clean. Get the mechanicals overhauled and re-do the seat if needed and drive the wheels off of it. Old survivor vehicles are cool, especially era-specific ones like your green machine. :seasix:

What's the difference between the two?

Closed cell is denser, has a higher R value per thickness, and acts as its own moisture barrier.

So---open cell foam for air filters, closed cell for insulation. Got it. :)

IDK, I tend to think "patina" is Italian for "looks like shit." The PO fancied himself an electrician and butchered some of the wiring. The corners of the cab and the spare tire hatch have a little cancer, but no holes...yet. The underside has a fair bit of surface rust where the original underside coating flaked off, but the front frame is rust free from a coating of oil because...Ford. If I did it, I would keep the colors, 16.5" wheels and hubcaps and restore to look as original as I can afford to, but add AC, possibly a better radiator/electric fan, and more power, which was originally rated at 215 HP, but lots of low end torque. I'd keep the old CB and aftermarket 8-track.

At a minimum, I think I need to more fully assess and address any rust, electrical, and drivability issues, even if I just restore the chassis and put the body back on without painting it.

I agree the patina with clear coat or 'shine juice' over it looks contrived and crappy. Honest old paint, IMO, is fine. Better than shabby new paint. Where I am, the cost of a factory-quality paint job is currently $20,000 to $30,000 dollars, with about $6000 to $8000 in materials included. As for the rat rod thing, give me a break.
Neat truck, you'll do what you need to do. M&H makes great direct-fit wiring harnesses.

And...significantly higher cost per R-value. Because it is water and vapor impermeable, if moisture gets behind it there is no escape, which some have claimed has led to rot/rust. If a leak develops behind open cell you will find it much sooner. OTOH, open cell allows penetration of moist air which can condense and cause it's own moisture problems.

The web is full of articles arguing for one over the other. Preferences seem to be more regional. I went with what the local contractors use around here.

Your project is entirely different than mine. I'm all heat- no AC. Thus I need to prevent moisture penetration from the inside out. You have to keep moisture from the outside in.

Spray entire inside with bed liner, then closed cell.
