Melanie who was a folk singer of the late 60's passed away at 76. She had many other hits in addition to this one.

I wonder what they’re going to do with her brain, Ma?

Give it to Joe Biden to help him during the next election.

Figures a bunch of aging hippie leftists would know who some obscure folk singer was. :D Having said that, big fan of the Edwin Hawkins' Singers:

I remembered the song "Brand New Key", I didn't recognize the other 3 I listened to yesterday. I question the validity of the "many other hits" comment.

People die every day. Lots of them. Most don't get mourned on social media.

Brand New Key was her only #1, not that this is a negative. It was more of a novelty song than anything else.

I agree. I remember when Brand New Key was played maybe 5 times a day on local AM radio KFRC or KYA back in the day. And right about that time, I was getting my brand new key, and at that age, knew what the song was all about. Probably because it was already my second year in a row at a Unitarian Church Hippie summer camp, making tie-dye shirts and candles and taking macrame classes.

The only song that wasn't novelty pop song for the charts was Lay Down, it was pretty good.

Hearing that one of your contemporaries has died doesn't remind you of your own mortality?

If you're afraid to die, people die all the time. It's been happening for the last 10,000 years. You afraid to die Phred?

Remind me? No, not really. And she was 10+ years older than me. We'll all die someday, not something I worry about. YMMV.

I was literally street skating when that song was popular and it only had a literal meaning to me until I got older. Then I realized it was that era's version of Afternoon Delight. :D
