Got fiber optic hooked up to the house yesterday. 5x faster than cable upload/download speeds. Just removed all the cable boxes and seemingly miles of cords and took them to the local Xfinity/Comcast office. No more cable. Better service. Faster WiFi. Less than half what we were paying. :seasix:

We live in a 200 lot development. We each paid about $1000 to have fiber laid in the neighborhood. Now on a local fiber provider and have not looked back at Spectrum/Comcast/ATT/etc....

I don't ever even check the speed anymore. It's just fast.

We have it (I gave in) as do most of the neighbors. We seem to have more down time than when we were on Comcast but maybe it's still an issue getting everything online. :island14:

What's the alternative? You still use AOL and dialup for web access?

Who is the new provider??

IQ Fiber. They've been laying fiber on the island for several months now. We had to give them permission to lay it in our small 80 home development but we didn't pay anything for the install, either in the development or to the house.

I see them working at the junctions between the various subdivisions, I'm just wondering if that work is causing the brief disruptions,

Yes. When they were doing the installation of the neighborhood we were one of the first that got a drop to home. It would periodically go dark as they were installing a new hub.

Our neighborhood was developed right around 2000, and it was the early test-bed for fiber for our local ISP.
I was involved in it from day 1.

We built our house there 11 years ago, and we've had fiber since then.
In the last 11 years, I can count on one hand how many times we've had issues that were not my own fault.

the ISP neglected the shit out of the rest of town and rural customers.

We went from paying $90/mo for fiber (actually only seeing ~50mbps) to having two competitors on our street.
They halved the price overnight and bumped speeds to 250mbps at the same time, to try to stop the bleeding.

Be patient, fiber is coming

We just went from paying over $300/mo with 80 Mbps to $75/mo with 500 Mbps.

500mbps for $55
750mbps for $75
1Gbps for $95

that is what a company I do a lot of work for charges.
Wish they were closer.

Can a glass fiber optic cable properly be called a "cord?"

Honest question for TV streamers. Do you find it annoying to have to close an app to switch to a different station?

I haven't really seen any of them have all the channels I want. Some have a couple and others have another couple. To get what I want I'd have to have 2-4 subscriptions and then factor in the pain of channel surfing. For those reasons, I keep the Dish.

Correct. Cable for now.

When we move into the new house at the farm we will be using StarLink satellite for internet and streaming will be our TV source.

So far I don't feel it is annoying. There is a learning curve to the apps and systems. A lot of moving parts for an old guy who began the TV journey with 3 black & white channels and no remote. :Jeff '79:

I found Dish more annoying with their disputes with the local broadcast stations. I am disappointed that I'm subscribed to 4 different streaming services and that the cost rivals Dish.

I'll admit it, yes.
I really figured my wife would struggle with that, but she's glad we dropped DirecTV.
turns out, I am the one that hates changing from source to source to find what I want.

I was perfectly happy with our DirecTV service, just got tired of paying for it.

No. We researched and went with YouTube TV, which has pretty much everything we want. The only time we switch apps is to watch Netflix or Amazon prime, which you have to do no matter how you get internet access. Being able to move, hide, and group channels is nice, and something cable and dish don’t have.

The only reason I'd get a generator is so I can post here without interruption.

Same here. We dropped cable tv two years ago now and went primarily with YTTV. Most of the ‘normal’ tv stuff we watch is on YTTV, news, sports, and other ‘cable’ shows. Then we have: Prime, Netflix, Max(HBO). That covers all the movies and streaming series we need. I think we get Max free with our phone plan, only have Prime app because we want prime shipping benefits.

They do have a decent channel lineup that checks a lot of boxes. Dish can hide channels. Starlink is our fastest internet option, but I think it might have trouble at times with two or three people streaming at the same time.

Thanks for the info. I may do it in July when my 2-year promotional rate runs out if I can't beat them down on price.

Shit. I'm paying $149/month for 25 Mbps. :cuss::cuss::cuss: But, that does include a router and 3 TV boxes, along with the plus TV package. If I take the internet without TV, the price goes up. :skep:

Roku. :seasix:

How do you watch something on a Roku? We have two of those but they’re hooked to TVs.

Hint: A Roku is just one of several ways to hook up a “dumb” TV to the internet, you don’t watch anything on the Roku since it doesn’t have a screen.

Just like hooking up a VCR or other peripheral to your non-smart "TV". Except the Roku is, to me anyway, a bit like magic. The Roku remote turns on the Roku box along with the "TV"; one button. Then press the home key and the main menu appears. Then scroll over and select an icon for an "app".

I'm grandfathered in to a low speed Spectrum internet only at $45/ month. No cable bill. My download speeds are around 75Mb/s. I have no problem streaming movies and shows. :yesnod:
