I feel like such a dick. I was mean to the post office guy today.
I sat in the living room all day yesterday to make SURE we could receive an overnight package my MIL had sent with perishables in it (homemade pasta sauce).
No one ever buzzed or came and knocked on the door. I did hear a knocking sound around 1pm, but it turns out it was just a neighbor hammering. But when I went down to open the door (apartment building with 2 units), the mail had been delivered that day and the neighbor had a non-perishable package that was left just inside the building door. In addition to no one ever ringing the buzzer, no note was left saying they attempted to deliver.
Today my MIL went to the post office down in Jacksonville, and they claimed delivery was attempted up here (Long Island).
So I had to go to the post office to pick it up. She gave me the package number.
I show up at the post office here and give them the package number and my ID. Tell them the package is addressed to my wife and give them the address. THEY WON'T LET ME HAVE IT because I don't live here and have nothing proving I live at the address since I don't live there. Then the guy tells me that I needed to be at home in the address to take delivery.
I lost it. I got agitated and told them a couple times that I sat in the living room all day PRECISELY because this stupid package was coming and we've had problems here in the past, and NO ONE ever rang the buzzer or walked up the stairs and knocked on the door, either one would have sufficed. No slip left either.
Then they offer to deliver the package ANOTHER day late, and put it on the truck tomorrow since they had already gone out for the day.
I yelled at the guy and left. I did come back in after a couple minutes and apologized for being mean to him since he wasn't the delivery man and is just a guy who has to follow policy like a robot, but it did not soothe my guilt and I still feel like a total dick, especially since I worked retail for a decade and KNOW first-hand that even as you move up the chain into management (1) your hands are tied in some instances and you can't do a damn thing about it (2) you have to take so much SHIT dealing with the masses on a daily basis.
I hope my apology was at least enough to prevent his day from being ruined. I did just raise my voice and didn't call him any names or swear. But now my day is a lost cause because I'm going to feel like a horrible ass-hole all day.
Hope you enjoyed this thrilling tale of woe.
