Printer version:

I have lost my patience and smashed numerous new pieces of shit printers to smithereens because it taunted me with factory built-in non-working "**** you" settings.

I own a 22-year-old HP commercial laser printer that still worked flawlessly.
The toner cartridges lasted what seemed like forever and it would blast out pages faster than shit through a goose. Even full color photo pictures would print in just seconds.

But HP stopped drivers for it to work with any newer operating system rendering a completely functional printer a brick.

They don’t want a printer to actually work cheaply and efficiently, forcing everyone to buy the new printers that don’t work and cost more per copy than what the Staples store charges for a copy.

Cant get my piece of shit newer Cannon printer to actually work.
And I'm royally pissed off.

And the tech companies are ****ing everyone over.

And I’m stuck with a completely awesome working laser printer that they won’t allow to function.

I have an HP4 I had working still up to a couple of years ago.
HP was the absolute best around, i wouldn't give one to anyone now.

There are generic drivers and adapters that you usually can make old printers work OR buy an older laptop run win 7 or whatever printer needs and make it a print server.

A printer came included with my first Pentium computer. Supplies to keep it operating were reasonable. By the time I replaced that P90 printers were optional accessories. A quick look at the cost of ink for those left me in disbelief. Have never owned another printer.

Typical drug dealer M.O. First sample is free, if you return for more be prepared to give them every penny you have.

My Brother laser printer worked great until I got a Win 10 computer. Even though it said it was supported, no joy.

Ended up getting a laser for the win 10 machine and the other went downstairs to the win 7 computer.

I did find a text only driver for it, but it still printed out ridiculous characters on the page it wouldn’t recognize.

You might also be able to use compatability mode or Windows Printer drivers.

From the looks of things I'd say that not printing at all would be the better option.

FWIW: Printers are easily the most cantankerous, archaic piece of PC hardware there is. They are the Model T's of computer peripherals.

Having said that, I have DJ 2132 that has to be at least 10 years old. It was in my shop most of that time, brought it in the house a year or so ago. Worked fine for a while then stopped. I don't use it a lot so didn't care.

Then I started screwing with it, re-installed the drivers from HP, didn't help. More time went by and I asked on some geek site, guy gave me a link for new drivers and it's been fine since.

Five or so years ago some friends got me a Canon wireless printer for my laptop. With the coupons, in-store deals, etc. it cost me about $30. It worked fine for a while, then didn't, back and forth. The factory software was pure bloatware. I think I got it running again with generic Windows drivers then it died again. Who cares.

That's why I brought the Deskjet in.

Use this document to find out how to enable printing for the HP Color LaserJet 3500, 3550, and 3600 Printers in Windows 10 or Windows 8.1/8.

I bought my first PC, an "IBM clone," in 1992. The box, a 5,000-pound monitor, keyboard, and mouse was $2,000.

At some point later that year I bought a pin printer; it was, as I recall, $200. I don't think there was any other type available. It would only print B&W text, no images, but it worked great, no issues with it.

I've got a Brother color laser that's given me very little trouble. A couple of times, it lost connection with the computer, but easily enough resolved.

Works great, and the toner cartridges last a pretty long time!

The other option would be to install an older version of Windows as a virtual machine, then print from that. Yeah it would not be ideal, but at least you will still be able to use the printer until it actually dies.

I used to be certified to do warrenty service on HP printers, including color laserjets. Been a long time since I've done it now though. HP laser printers are made by Canon. HP only makes the 'personality' board that's in it.

I feel your frustration. Dealing with driver and setup issues can be a real headache. Sometimes you have to go in via control panel and delete the unit, and then let it reinstall. I used to get through it that way quite a bit.

I've written 100's of 1,000s of lines of code without a license and now I've come clean. I'll sit right here and wait for the Mar-A-Lago SWAT-style raid.

Its unreasonable to expect developers to provide backward compatibility for old, possibly discontinued peripherals in perpetuity.

There are ways around it (by running a Linux environment emulator - but the setup takes some techie neurons) by trying out the "incompatible drover" method 1/3 of the way down this web page:

You can use any driver that supports PCL 3/4 given its age.

95 percent of the drivers are the same for a given brand, the 5 percent is feature differences. If you just want it to print, that'll work.

I think there is even a genertic PCL3/4 driver, or if yours has Postcript you can use PS driver.

Never mind....your ****ed.

That is one of those 'host based printers' that they used to cut down on costs by offloading all the rendering to the computer.

I've gone the same route with printers, cameras, and flip phones. The stuff 15+ years ago worked flawlessly and was solid. Each successive generation was built cheaper and was harder to use and did less. At this point, I have no printer. I email what needs printing to a friend and do it that way. Maybe I need one page printed every year at most. My issue is the ink dries out due to lack of use.

Printers and I have never gotten along. First was a 600 dollar Canon back in the 90's. Printed half a ream of paper and died. No support, no local repairs available, haven't bought any Canon product since then. Then went to HP. First seemed ok, but printed 200 sheets and died. Next HP was printing fine, then HP insusted I had to have a ink subscription. Then they dropped the cartidges I needed but refused to cancel subscription. Was buying local ink, and then it jammed for good. Found out a 30 cent plastic sprocket went bad with no recourse to fix. It's sitting in the sunroom as a plant stand now.2250 sheets printed. Got a Xerox black and white and it's printed over 2k already without missing a beat. Hasn't even needed toner.

I have officially given up trying to get this to work with Win 10.
I’ve tried 20 times over the last 5 years.

It works with my really old Dell Vista gaming laptop.
But that old vista laptop keeps giving warnings that it won’t connect to the internet because of vulnerabilities.

The best working PC I owned was my 1998 Gateway that worked flawlessly.

I code for Win7 and up (have several programs to my credit). I also code in PHP, Python, C++, bash and other Linux stuff. Linux desktop? Bah, I'm an old school CLI guy.

I also write code for embedded processor devices. ARM, ST32, Atmel AVR and x86 platforms.
