2 years ago, you could get Walmart brand sodas for $2.39 per 12 pack.. Now it's $4.49 and they discontinued some flavors for diet soda cans. That's like 87% increase in 2 years.
Virtually all non caffeinated diet sodas are now $6.98 to $8.50. I understand that prices went up due to inflation, but 87%???
My favorite sodas just went on sale for $4.29 per 12-pack at a local grocery store, so I stocked up. Does anyone have any idea why sodas went up more than most other things?

264 cans of soda? That won't even last you 2 weeks.
I gave up sugared soda because of my diabetes. I gave up diet soda because the aspartame in it is a proven inflammatory, and I spend my life trying to stay off of anti-inflammatories. Honestly, I don't even miss it.

Aluminum prices jumped is why or at least most of the reason for the jump.
I used to drink a lot of soda. I'd usually pick up several 12 packs at a time, when they were on sale. Typically 4 for $ 12 was common, then it became 3 for $ 12. I won't pay $ 6-8 for a 12 pack of something that isn't good for me anyway.
I started cutting back on sodas a few years ago, so the price spike was just extra reinforcement not to buy it. Now, at best, I'll get a two liter bottle 2 or 3 times a year, and then only if it's the green bottles of Dr Pepper, the kind made with cane sugar, not corn syrup. Fortunately, that is rarely stocked, so even when I have a wild hair for a soda, if the green labeled stuff isn't there, I walk away empty handed and don't feel bad about it.
And I won't buy Coke anymore for any reason, at any price. Coke made that an easy decision.

I use a sodastream because paying for factory tap water and having to carry it home is for suckers. After I finish my current co2 cylinder, I'm converting to a 5lb co2 tank with adapter which will probably last me 3 years or so.

So, you’re overweight and have high blood pressure. What’s your blood sugar level?
But have no health issues.
That’s an odd correlation.
A1C fluctuates with my weight. Right now A1C is 6.6 which is pre-diabetic. I'm at 225 lbs. If I drop to 215 lbs, my A1C will be back to under 6 which is not pre-diabetic. I take Ozempic to lose weight.

So, you’re overweight, have high blood pressure, and pre-diabetic. At 52.
But you have no health issues.
Do you know what “health issues” means?
Most people my age have those issues if they are overweight. Weight is the main contributor. Show me a 52 year old with 31.5+ BMI with normal A1C and blood pressure.
It has to do with weight, not diet sodas.
When I was under 200 lbs, my numbers were perfect.

Maybe we should go back to discussing spending 45 minutes at a truck stop half way to Grandma's house, when a different choice of vehicle would shorten that to 5 minutes.

I am 6' 1", and around 215, BMI about 28, so overweight but not obese. If I would have lost the weight without Ozempic, my A1C would be just as low. Ozempic lowers A1C by lowering weight. It makes losing weight easier and as a result, A1C drops. I was barely over 7 before Ozempic. As I said before, most co-workers at similar age and BMI have the same exact issues. Weight is the only reason, not Diet Sodas.

It's not something unusual. Most people have the same issues at that age.
I’m not sure it’s “most.” My wife and I don’t and we’re well past 50. Played 18 holes today and we’re going on a long bike ride tomorrow. My BMI is 24, wife’s is 25. No diabetes, high blood pressure, or other such problems. Same with most of our friends here, but we’re all very active.

40% isn’t “most.” And yes, obesity is a huge problem in this country, but we’re supposed to accept it as normal based on TV commercials, and “fat shaming” is almost a hate crime now. Life is full of choices. Some people choose wisely, some don’t.

So what? Does the fact that lots of men your age are obese make it "OK" for you to be obese? If that is reality in your world, fine, but it's not in mine.

Kids are glued to their phone/tablet. Hard to get them to do any physical activity unless it's playing at a playground. I will try to go back to playing table tennis once a week. I used to be a pretty good player and was even Florida State Champion in 2010. My level has dropped dramatically after I stopped regular practice. I want to start playing Tennis again after not playing for 26 years (I was a pretty good Tennis player as well but quit 26 years ago when I was 26 years old). Problem is finding someone to play with.

Everything went down hill with COVID. I was 200 lbs early 2020... We had a table tennis table at work and I played for an hour every lunch break at work. I also went to the table tennis club every week. I gained 35 lbs in 2020 and another 11 lbs in 2021 and was up to 246. I'm at 223 now.

Coke has always been a weakness for me.
I used to drink 3 or 4 20oz cups of coffee with a shit ton of cream and sugar every day at work, in addition to the coke habit.
Gave up the coffee, cold turkey, 6 or 8 years ago.
This spring I took up drinking black coffee to cut down on the coke.
Might have 1 can during the work week now, still have coke on the weekends.
Can't stand any diet soda.:ack:

2 years ago, you could get Walmart brand sodas for $2.39 per 12 pack.. Now it's $4.49 and they discontinued some flavors for diet soda cans. That's like 87% increase in 2 years.
Virtually all non caffeinated diet sodas are now $6.98 to $8.50. I understand that prices went up due to inflation, but 87%???
My favorite sodas just went on sale for $4.29 per 12-pack at a local grocery store, so I stocked up. Does anyone have any idea why sodas went up more than most other things?
We stopped drinking it about 5 years ago due to the sweetners used.

So?
I put on a few pounds too when I was on "house arrest". That caused my diabetes to get worse, and in short order, I had to do something about it, so I did. I didn't whine about it, or go see my doctor to get some injections to try to force myself to lose weight. Nor did I try to make some kind of excuse for it like "but, GS3 gained a bunch of weight too".
Hint for you: when you use the "lots of other guys do it" excuse, you sound like a seven year old. Don't take my word for it, ask around. It's the truth. :yesnod:
I lost weight during the Covid area. 25 lbs.

I am 6' 1", and around 215, BMI about 28, so overweight but not obese. I'm 59, and in recent years am starting to have trouble staying consistently under 7 on my A1C, taking the minimum amount of metformin. My doctor wants me to take the ozempic, and swears I'll be thinner and in the low 6s in 6 months or less. I'm not interested in injecting stuff daily.
I have IRL friends who are on Jardiance and are happy with it, so I am thinking of possibly trying that next year. Do you have any side effects from it?
I'm with you, no injections for me either. Losing weight is not that hard, counting carbs is really all you need to do. Eat all the zero or low carbs foods you want, avoid the empty carbs.
The Jardiance is really great stuff, there's only one side effect. It works by flushing sugars out through your kidneys so you pee a lot. Like a whole lot.
Taurus
12-23-2023, 11:32am
If I would have lost the weight without Ozempic, my A1C would be just as low. Ozempic lowers A1C by lowering weight. It makes losing weight easier and as a result, A1C drops. I was barely over 7 before Ozempic. As I said before, most co-workers at similar age and BMI have the same exact issues. Weight is the only reason, not Diet Sodas.
Yes, I fully understand that I need to lose weight to be healthier but once you hit your 50's, metabolism slows and it's hard to lose weight.
Your A1C is not that low and should be lower. Cut out the empty carbs that metabolize as sugars in your system.

As I said, 99.8% of sods IS water.
If I drink 4.95 liter water and then eat 5 grams of aspartame and flavoring, it is the same.
Diet soda contains a high amount of sodium, 60 mg off the top of my head. That cause fluid retention and makes it difficult to flush sugars from your system.

Yes. They're kids, they don't know shit. The more stuff you make them do, the better the chances they'll come across something they'll enjoy. There's no way they already know all of their preferences.
Besides, haven't we all gotten dragged along to do stuff when we were younger and it took decades to look back and learn they were great experiences and irreplacable memories?
Should I drag them out of the house and force them to do something they don't want to do?
Just another excuse.
Why not just talk to them, and see what they would like to do that isn't in front of a screen? My son is big into video games, but I bet he could be a good athlete if he tried, but isn't very interested. He likes to go for walks with our dog, play mini-golf and hit some balls while we are at the driving range, we take him bowling, he has a bicycle, and will go for a ride if I go with him, etc. It doesn't even matter what we do, we try to do SOMETHING at least once per day, and twice if possible. After years of the mini-golf/driving range thing, this year he asked for his own set of golf clubs, and I've played 18 holes of par 3 golf with him 2-3 times. You will NEVER know what might interest them if you don't try.

I started working with my dad when I was 8 years old. I loved it and it’s that early experience as a carpenters helper that gave me a strong work ethic and value of the dollar.
Some of my best childhood memories are from those days with my dad. Nothing makes a young boy feel like one of the guys like hard work. A young boy drinking black coffee and cursing in front of dad was a bonus. Funny but I’d say dammit or shit and dad would only say don’t let your mother hear you talk like that. :Jeff '79:
