Interesting to see how this works out.
Raid on Entebe, part II?
This begs the question, though, why don't oceangoing ships keep weapons lockers on board, for just such an eventuality? Seems like having some automatic weapons, and two or three Stinger anti-tank guided missiles on board would be helpful for just such an eventuality.
Edit: Ship is Israeli owned, but leased to the Japanese, and apparently, mainly crewed by the Japanese, so we'll see who does what here.

Hitting the helo should have been reasonably easy with such a weapon. Of course, then there's the problem of flaming debris starting fires, but I'd rather deal with a fire than with hijackers.
Edit II: Since it's flagged out of the Bahamas, (a flag of convenience, no doubt), seems like it's the Bahamas problem. Waiting to see the vaunted Bahamas Navy effect a rescue here.
If I was Israel and Japan, I'd tell the ship's owner to pound sand. You didn't flag the vessel with us, and now you expect our Navies to help you? That's the whole point of flying a flag in the first place, to let others know who backs you and, looking at it another way, who you just really shouldn't **** with.
