Onondaga Nation leaders blast 'Geronimo' codename for Bin Laden
Published: Wednesday, May 04, 2011, 6:35 AM Updated: Wednesday, May 04, 2011, 9:05 AM
National Archives, Ben Wittick / AP PhotoThis photo shows the famed Indian warrior Geronimo, a Chiricahua Apache, posing with a rifle in 1887.
Onondaga Nation Territory -- Leaders of the Onondaga Nation blasted as “reprehensible” the code name used for Osama bin Laden in the commando assault that killed him: “Geronimo.”
“We’ve ID’d Geronimo,” U.S. forces reported by radio Sunday to the White House. Later, word came that “Geronimo” was dead.
Geronimo (http://www.history.com/topics/geronimo) was an Apache leader in the 19th century who spent many years fighting the Mexican and U.S. armies until his surrender in 1886.
“Think of the outcry if they had used any other ethnic group’s hero,” the Onondaga Council of Chiefs said in a release Tuesday. “Geronimo bravely and heroically defended his homeland and his people, eventually surrendering and living out the rest of his days peacefully, if in captivity.”
“Geronimo is arguably the most recognized Native American name in the world,” the chiefs said, “and this comparison only serves to perpetuate negative stereotypes about our people.”
See coverage of bin Laden's death in stories, videos and photos (http://topics.syracuse.com/tag/osama%20bin%20laden%20dead/index.html).
The chiefs said the incident revived memories of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s remark last year that Gov. David Paterson should “get yourself a cowboy hat and a shotgun” to deal with Indian affairs.
“It’s typical,” said Onondaga Tadodaho Sid Hill, the nation's spiritual leader. He said Geronimo was a hero to American Indians and it was incomprehensible that “they use him to identify a man like Osama Bin Laden.”
“Why would that be honorable to us?” he asked.
“All they know is just cowboys and Indians, the stuff they saw on TV.”
Hill said he had higher hopes for President Obama, who he said was adopted by the Blackfoot tribe during the 2008 election campaign. “Nobody seems to be able to see our side."
Loretta Tuell, staff director and chief counsel for the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, had a similar same reaction.
File photo / AP PhotoThis undated file photo shows the Chiricahua Apache Geromino, late in his life.
“These inappropriate uses of Native American icons and cultures are prevalent throughout our society, and the impacts to Native and non-Native children are devastating,” Tuell said.
Tuell is a member of the Nez Perce tribe and grew on the tribe’s reservation in Idaho.
Steven Newcomb, a columnist for the weekly newspaper Indian Country Today, criticized what he called a disrespectful use of a name revered by many Native Americans.
“Apparently, having an African-American president in the White House is not enough to overturn the more than 200-year American tradition of treating and thinking of Indians as enemies of the United States,” Newcomb wrote.
“It’s frustrating,” said Hill. “We just can’t let this slide again.”

I kind of agree. Was codename Douchebag, GoatF'er, or SoonToBeDead taken ?

should they have called him drunkee instead?
I can't believe they're still using the term "Indian" to describe Native Americans.

My intel says that the US government used whiskey to buy information on "Geronimo's" whereabouts.

The Bill of No Rights
Courtesy of Lewis W. Napper
We, the sensible of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid any more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior and secure the blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt-ridden delusional, and other liberal, commie, pinko bedwetters.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that a whole lot of people were confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim that they require a Bill of No Rights.
ARTICLE I
You do not have the right to a new car, big-screen color TV or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything.
ARTICLE II
You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc., but the world is full of idiots, and probably always will be.
ARTICLE III
You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful, do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all of your relatives independently wealthy.
ARTICLE IV
You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes.
ARTICLE V
You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in public health care.
ARTICLE VI
You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and kill you.
ARTICLE VII
You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat, or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won't have the right to a big-screen color TV or a life of leisure.
ARTICLE VIII
You do not have the right to demand that our children risk their lives in foreign wars to soothe your aching conscience. We hate oppressive governments and won't lift a finger to stop you from going to fight if you'd like. However, we do not enjoy parenting the entire world and do not want to spend so much of our time battling each and every little tyrant with a military uniform and a funny hat.
ARTICLE IX
You do not have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to have one, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities in education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful.
ARTICLE X
You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to pursue happiness -- which, by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an overabundance of idiotic laws created by those around you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

Somehow I missed this one..
Have you ever heard of Magellan, the Spanish explorer?
Neat story.
He decided to raid in the Philippines, in conquest for Spain, with the help of a few Muslims from another island.
It did not work out so well and this is where he died. Cebu, Philippines
(google it, neat story)
Lapu Lapu, the island Chief of Mactan and his warriors killed him and all his men before they ever made it to the shore. :sadangel:
Anyway, I think it was about 50 years later they finally came back and did take over for King Philip :yesnod:

But then the white man came.. and wanted to cut up all of the land up into squares and sell it! :toetap:

Mexicans didn't exist before the white man came. The Mexica did (now known as being part of the Aztecs). Mexicans were a mix of Spanish Europeans, Mexica, and other native americans from the area now known as Mexico.

I'm not sure about that really, serious...
Might be a good plan, but I know it wont work long term in these times.
For instance, There are still a lot of Filipinos that live where ever they can, some in the city's, and some on remote islands, generations of family's have lived on the same land or house for years without ever owning the land..
In the city's they call then squatters, out in the provinces it is pretty much just normal.
You can be a home owner without owning the land, and have rights, sometimes even more rights!
If the land were sold and you are told to leave, you have the right to move your house, and given a timely notice to do so..
A squatter that lives in a bamboo hut can get electric installed easy with no building permit, but myself as a land owner I have to get a building permit to get electric, does that sound right?
I myself just ran a wire to a squatter and pay their electric bill also to say thanks, as their electric is only about a dollar a month for a light bulb. when they have to move I get to keep the meter and electric.. :D
Wait a minute, did I get off point here?

These whiners are just furthering the false stereotype that all Navite American tribes are the same by claiming to be offended for the use of the name of Geronimo from a tribe from over 1000 miles from them. I've spent a lot of time in the Chiricahuas. I've visited the remote grave of one of Geronimo's sons. I wonder if any of these clowns from Idaho or Montana have? IMO, Geronimo belongs at least as much to Southeastern Arizona as he does to some imaginary, "Native American Nation" that never existed. The use of the name in this case doesn't really fit IMO, but who cares? The Navy SEALS can use whatever code names they want without worrying about whether they are politically correct or not.

I don't know why the "Native Americans" are hostile about the name Geronimo. Geronimo was a Spanish name meaning Jerome, which was given to the Apache Goyaałé by Mexicans that he terrorized.
If anybody needs to be pissed it is a Mexican American guy I know who is named Geronimo Ortiz.

You forgot about the black slaves, the African genome makes up about 15% of the Mexican population, 45% Native American, 40% European.
