I needed something to do so I pulled a Zeek and bought another project car that needed a full rehab. I'm having fun with it at a very leisurely pace, now that I'm retired with zero responsibilities. I know about your intermittent health issues, but maybe something you could do on the bench would be fun. I rebuilt the hydraulic top motor for this car last week and had fun. Stuff like that. 90754

Aside from that, I spent 53 years of my life building things, and have a negative interest in building or fixing anything now. When I have to fix something, I really have to force myself and I put it off as long as possible.
I had a plumber replace my water heater last week cuz I'm too lazy. Same height, just two plumbing fittings and one electric wire. Eh, no thanks, too much effort.
But he ****ed it up (believe it or not) gotta call Lowe's Monday.

A very MOST lucrative vocation would be starting a leftist non-profit.
Pick a cause that they bleed and cry over.
Broker it with mad max, she will keep 50%.
Once the money comes in, do nothing with it, except far and vacation and office staff, only hire family, expenses.
Next year when asked about your success, you advise the problem is much larger than you thought and request 3x the money.
Rinse and repeat,,,

According to Klaus Schwab (https://search.brave.com/search?q=klaus%20schwab&source=desktop&spellcheck=0)& the WEF, we will all be eating bugs soon, so I was thinking of developing an insect harvesting industry
& finding all the different varieties that taste good with spices & recipes that would improve their taste .
Colorful packaging & zany names for each product will ensure & large customer base for years to come .
Anyone want in on the ground floor investment start-up ?
We will also be hiring taste testers for those wanting to participate in this new global enterprise .
my two favorite side gigs are:
1) wrapping straws. I buy bulk plastic strays and rolls of straw paper then wrap them at home.
2) Candle wick manufacturing. They get cut to specific lengths, then the little metal doodad stamped on one end, and finally, run through heated liquid wax. Sell them in boxes of 1000.

Ha, I was a moldmaker all my life since high school, til I was forced to retire two years ago because of arthritis; I was 71 then.
I'd been self-employed since 1985, shop in backyard, I loved it and hoped to work til I dropped. Didn't turn out that way.
I'm still trying to get rid of a lot of machines and hand tools.
One could make a killing here in the trades; plumbers especially. In 19 years of living here I have yet to find anyone, including contractor clients, who was happy with any plumber that they hired.
Electricians are next. They are generally very good- just not enough of them.

I agree with the demand. But not the killer income. Most people who need or want the services of a tradesman do not want to pay what it’s worth.
This includes homeowners, builders and developers, and employers.
Yes a plumbing contractor may charge $100 per hour, maybe a little more if the area he works in is affluent. But his business expenses and licensing and regulations eat him up. The actual tradesman who is doing the work is lucky to be making $25-35 per hour. Same with carpenters and masons and flooring guys and electricians and HVAC guys.
In reality in today’s market, a good tradesman should be earning $100+ per hour working for an employer. Add a contractors biz expenses and P&O and he’s going to be charging $300 or more per hour.
How many will pay $2,400 per day per man? A house full of tradesmen and you are looking at $10,000 per day.
Good luck with that.

I'll make this as brief as I can. Sub from Lowe's shows up, was a bit condescending over my installation of the existing heater in 2012 (which was still working fine) but not enough for me to say anything. They do the work, I'm in the living room leaving them alone.
Says "We're done." I give him check and they leave. In a few minutes I check the bathroom sink hot faucet which is a foot or two from the heater. Water cold, not full flow. Check kitchen (which is downstream) same thing. Go back to bathroom same thing, even lower flow.
So I look at the heater. Power switch is on, inlet valve is on, outlet valve is -- WTF!!! -- CLOSED!
The arrogant m-fugger never filled the tank! I immediately shut the power off and opened the outlet valve and bathroom fixture. Took probably 5 minutes to purge the air out.
Filled til only water came out the sink, turned power on, wait a bit, hot water is fine. Was the upper element in the air for how long? It could have been up to 20 minutes or more, depending on when they actually flipped the switch.
I immediately made a voice memo on my phone, detailing everything. By now it was around 6 PM, so the next morning I called the plumber and related the story to the woman on the phone, and saying I just wanted to get it on the record. Monday I mailed a letter to the local Lowe's.
I took a shower and afterwards I put a voltmeter on the lower element -- 229 volts or something. Upper element -- a big fat egg. So it did burn out. I went online and filled out the "AO Smith" warranty, and detailed everything in the comments section. So tomorrow morning (Monday) I will call my local Lowe's.

I just talked to a genius buddy of mine about this. He knows house and commercial/industrial wiring, car wiring, electronics, computers, anything mechanical, hydraulic, hydraulic-mechanical, machining, had SCUBA and a pilot's license a long time ago, and a zillion other things that I can't think of right now.
At any rate, the two elements are not necessarily on and off simultaneously as I thought above. He said that if I'm getting hot water (which I am) then the top element is still working. He agreed that it might have a short life though if it was exposed to air even briefly.
He's thinking, seeing as I still have hot water 10 days later, that it was not exposed to air. It's impossible to know now if it was, it all depends on how high the water level ever got.
The plumber was 35 or so years old. He said "Take it easy on the plumber, he's still young," lol.

:seasix:
When I bought my first machine tools in January 1985, I was about 8 months short of my 35th birthday.
I can't believe how much energy -- and lack of money -- I had back then. My buddy and I moved the 2,000 lb. Bridgeport from the dealer with a trailer, after taking the table off, unloaded it on the dirt floor of my barn and jacked it up several inches and through my 32" shop door onto the concrete and rolled it into place with pipes by ourselves.
The 800 lb. surface grinder was a cakewalk.
And as time went on, we moved a lot of other shit in my shop too. Like a 1,500 lb. (guessing) EDM machine from one room to another. We hooked a nylon tow strap to it, hooked it to his truck out through the shop door, slopped the floor up with laundry detergent for lube and inched it in.
It's not rocket science, but it helps to know some time-tested tricks. :)
The bigger shops and factories, with towmotors and loading docks, don't know how easy they have it. :yesnod:

'Cat Grandpa' goes viral for napping with shelter pets

Terry Laurmen, 75, has become a regular volunteer at the Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary in Green Bay over the last year.
Set up like a cat cafe - with sprawling arm chairs and the bird channel on loop on television - the shelter was set up by 27-year-old Elizabeth Feldhausen in 2016.
It specialises in looking after, rehabilitating and rehoming cats with disabilities and special care needs who would be at risk of being put down elsewhere.
Terry, a retired Spanish teacher, began turning up almost every day with his own special brush to groom the cats.
As a cat-lover who travels for large chunks of the year, he is unable to get one of his own, but has always loved volunteering with them.
'Cat Grandpa'
"They all know him, when he walks through the door they run over to him because they know he has the special brush and the special treats. They all pile on top of him and rub all over him and just love him," sanctuary owner Elizabeth told the BBC.

I always did too, all my life. Plumbed this whole place in 1981, layed well line.
New well and new well line in 2008, moved pump and tank in cellar (from a pit) with more new plumbing to reach bathroom and kitchen which are on the other side of the house.
But too old now. :( I'm still physically able, just mentally unable.

I hated my first year or so of retirement (spring of '21) would rather work in my shop, and was nervous about living off of my portfolio.
But I slowly have gotten into the groove, and got used to relying on the unearned income. Could never go back now even if I was physically capable.
My big "project" now is fixing the wiring in my firewood/coal trailer that the mice wrecked over the winter. Spent a couple hours on it on Wednesday, another hour today and it'll be done. Not hard work but I've had to get on my back and get back up a zillion times to access the wires underneath it -- that's the hardest part, getting back up, as you know. :)
My coal bin needs some fixing too, easy work but the hardest part is getting out of my mentally-lazy state. :(

Bolded, I could have easily wrote that.:cert:
I also play the sock market, but now have it set up that it sort of runs itself for the most part! Having good safe dividend paying stocks (Called widow and orphan stocks) makes my life a bit simpler.
As far as work, even doing a lot around the house is getting difficult. I'm hiring good local people to do more.
Do to a new neighbor moving in and posting a lot of the 100 acres he bought I went on a walk around to check things as he did not have a survey done. Was making sure he did not encroach on my property as he did go over a neighbors property line!
Its very rough walking in that area, I went using a walking staff and it still took me much more time to do the area than it used to. Good thing I had the staff or I would have fallen a few times and as you said the hard thing is getting back up.
Not sure what the future brings, naturally my wife is also having medical problems. To do what is best for both of us I am very reluctantly considering making this a summer/good weather camp, and getting a seniors apartment (No kids allowed) down in a more civilized area for the other months.
So I do understand you!

You get a union pension also, no?
Aside from SS, my sole income is from my portfolio; tiny amount is stock divvies, most of it is interest from bonds. I can't spend it all.
I think about how long I can live here also, heating with wood/coal. I have a propane furnace but when you're used to wood/coal heat a furnace doesn't really cut it in the depths of winter. I've been buying most of my wood for over 10 years now, used to cut it all myself.
Being on this end of life is good in some ways, not so good in other ways. One of my lunch buddies will be 84 next month (a widower) lives out in the woods alone farther than I do, and is on a walker. We've had two really easy winters, we're due for a bad or even normal one -- he'll be stuck inside probably for weeks. He's always talking about improving his house, the latest is getting new gutters.
WTF? In his situation he should be thinking about a better place to live. But he knows everything so I just STFU.

Yes I get a good pension & SS, which also includes good medical benefits. Been on it since 2002. Unfornituely pension is set up with no COLAs. What I got in 02 I still get today. To be honest that worked out fine, but the new political climate and excesses of the liberal/oppressive obama type lawmakers chew into it a lot more than any sane person ever figured would happen.
