View Full Version : I need a vacation; suggestions?

As an adult I have never been on a vacation.
Back about 10 years ago I started a thread at the other place asking for suggestions and I never went anywhere.

Florida would be my 1st choice because it’s only a 2-hour flight.
But every resort website I check out is like a Walmart of resorts even at the high-end spots.
They all show a pool surrounded by 200 lounge chairs that can’t be quiet or relaxing.

I want a quiet beach area that still has high end restaurants.

I don’t have a passport and I hear that places like Turks and Caicos are what I want.

Now that i don't work I will buy a one way airline ticket and worry about coming back when i feel like it.

I don’t need a $700 night hotel because who spends time in a hotel room when on vacation?

A Caribbean vacation isn't out of reach without a passport if you stick to the U.S. Virgin Islands: St. John, St. Croix and St. Thomas. Since they're U.S. territories, a government-issued photo ID or birth certificate with a raised seal will suffice.

The best beaches to fit your quiet beach criteria won't have the resort amenities.

I know a spot where you can pretty much have the beach to yourself. But you will need to cook your own food and mix your own drinks.

Little Palm Island in mid-lower Keys is accessible only by boat and I believe is $$$$ out of my budget range.

Would be quiet, private. One restaurant, to my knowledge (how the heck are you going to find multiple fine restaurants with nobody in them??)

Probably more for couples and honeymooners. You have anyone besides Rosey Palm?

Sidebar: vacation areas in FL tend to have a lot of good restaurants but few to zero great restaurants. For great restaurants, you generally have to go back to Chicago, San Francisco, other chitholes.

Yes - and if you can snag one of the government cabins in the state park, they are pretty private and quite nice - they were devastated by a hurricane a few years back but my understanding is that they are renovated and available now.

If you don't mind things a little rustic there are the Old Salt Works cabins in the area - we've rented there several times and kayaked on the Gulf, beware the time of year because the deer flies will eat your azz up during the hot months !

Indeed. And yes Hurricane Michael did a number on the Cape and Mexico Beach too.
We had property on the Cape and got real close to building there. Even considered a move there. But in the end we decided to move to a rural location and visit the coast if the bug hits us. But after 30+ years on the beach I have little interest.

Key west is probably one of the better answers on this thread. It is definitely not "full homo", in fact its has a nice mix of everything o/p asked for. It does have its high end expensive hotels, but there are also decent cheap places to stay. Bed and breakfast, hostels, etc. The hotels up north side are cheap in comparison to those in old town and new town.

Quiet beach? fort zach state park, and it has a bar. also the beach at the Galleon is open to public, quiet and has a decent bar. There are PLENTY of good restaurants, pick the type of food you like and ask around.

One thing great for single travelers, many of the serving class is from up north and moved there to get away. there is still that kind of vibe in the less well known places where you can sit, drink, chat with strangers, and feel perfectly welcome. I've been going there since 93 annually. Yes it has changed, but you can still find your hiding places.

Bonus---3 hour direct flights from philly.

Yup, casa marina is pricey and the rooms are SMALL. I almost always run a group and rent houses and hire a chef. Our february trip is only 1300 pp for lodging, chef and booze for the house. when I go last minute and not booked, My go to is the The Marker due to proximity to schooners wharf. https://www.themarkerkeywest.com/

Some very sweeeeeeet boats in that marina, as last year Hendrix 164' yacht was there, a couple of Viking 92s.

The one I stay on is 75' tri-level, newer, sleeps 10, but very comfortable for four.

Florida but don't go to a resort. BTDT and had a great time.
Or go to Kauai for a great, quiet, relaxing 1940's type of Hawaiian experience. Quiet, scenic, very nice. My favorite Island of the Hawaiian Islands. My favorite destination these days is away from the seashore and away from the airports and involves driving classic cars on road trips cross-country here in America. Relaxing, you are in total control, great scenery, and great food. No passport needed. And not super expensive, either.

holy crap, most people dont even know that place exists. awesome and love the homemade sangria, lol.

Definitely one of my favorites, four of us go, get unending plates, great variety, and without including booze and tip, you are still way under $200.

They just opened one in downtown Fort Lauderdale, I have yet to hit it, but will soon.

Probably only 3 or 4 days there and then move on to a busier area with more walking distance restaurants.

You’ve never driven highway 1 down the Keys. Rent a vert, drop the top, turn the tunes up and just cruise. Stop at the tiki bar right before 7 mile bridge. Watch the manatees and drink a couple of cheap beers. Stop by Big Pine Key and see the small Key deer. Getting from Miami to Florida City is NEVER easy, both the Turnpike Extension and U.S. 1 are parking lots, once you get on U.S. 1 from Florida City, it can take 3+ hours to Key West, if you can do it in under 3 hours it is a major accomplishment.

Distance Florida City to Key West is 126 miles, on mostly 2-land undivided roads with speed limits that average 35.

Key Largo, Tavernier, Islamorada and Marathon all slow your drive.

Departing Thursday – Sunday at 8:30 a.m. from Key Biscayne in Miami, this high-speed jet-propelled catamaran, makes for a smooth trip in just under four hours, docking in the heart of old town. The service is available as a same-day trip or can be combined with overnights in Key West.

That discussion was Miami to key largo, not key west.

The key west trip is beautiful, one time. If possible, there are multiple stops along the way such as Lorelai, Sunset bar and grille, Tonio's Seafood shack, etc, etc. before actually getting to key west. 7 mile bridge is the jewel of the ride. The ride these days is max 45 speed, usually less, lots of cops seeking speeders and just not the fun ride it used to be.

For me, a direct flight from philly, just over three hours is the key anymore. Land, head toward baggage claim and get a drink on the way as you walk inside.

Cool, fly in, go drop your bags and head out to explore, fk that drive.

Fly into LAX and hitch a ride and you’re at your VRBO in 10 minutes . There’s not any resorts but it’s beautiful and quiet. Local eateries have always been good. If you don't like overcrowded beaches, I got the right beach for you. I take my family there frequently. Indian Rocks Beach. There is a place with a Dog Park where you can park for free and walk to the beach. Not crowded at all. Many good Restaurants within only a few minutes driving.

I'm not tall but have been adamant about first class since I was a kid.

For some it's not about the leg room but rather better service, a more comfortable seat & not having to deal with the cheap people in the back.

So you were just raised that way. What kind of service do you require for a few hour flight? On international I can see the value because of my size and enjoy the benefits on a long flight. But find more entitled little whining bitches in first class can actually worse than a crying baby. :seasix:

I have an ex military friend who flies those airlines. I refuse. From what I understand: no first class, just seats starting in row 1, They are generally older, smaller planes, so seating still tight. No frills, often late, limited room for carry-on and pay for luggage.

I would look up what type of plane it is and search for the plane before booking.

Where do you get your knowledge?
Pure conjecture :island14:

I've easily been on over 1k flights (stopped flying ~6yrs ago due to spacial vertigo)
Never had a bad experience in first. Sat next to a lot of interesting people & enjoyed my flight.

BTW over 80% of first class seats are paid for by corporations flying employees around or people upgrading with credit card miles.
Less than 10% actually PAY for first class.

American Airlines renamed their cabins a few years ago as corporations didn't want to pay for "first class"

Personal experience I also have meet many great people as well. But have found that many look down on those that are in the back of the plane thinking that they are somehow better than them. Truly wealthy people typically fly on private planes.

Like I said, over 80% of people in first aren't actually paying for it themselves (except the like of Spirit where an Uber ride to the airport is more expensive)

It's in your head.

I was always one of the last people to board domestic flights because I didn't feel comfortable with people walking past me with your mentality.

Feeling the need for a vacation is something we can all relate to, especially after a day of flying. It's like a little nudge from life saying, "Hey, it's time for some relaxation!"
If you're looking for vacation suggestions, it depends on what kind of adventure you're craving. Whether it's a serene beach escape, a bustling city exploration, or something entirely different, there are endless possibilities out there.
Speaking of adventure, I recently came across some cruises departing from Los Angeles at https://www.cruisetimetables.com/cruises-from-los-angeles-california.html. Cruises can be a fantastic way to unwind, explore new destinations, and create some wonderful memories.
