On a car with TPMS sensors, can you replace the valve stem independently of the sensor module, or must they both be replaced as a unit? :waiting:
Yeah, I could have Googled it, but this is more fun.

I think they can be

YT has more than few videos with instructions how this is done, I did not view any, as I do not endorse those who may cost you more money than the cost of the TPMS.

My last few vehicles they were all sensor/stem combo. One part so everything was replaced all at once anyway.

That was my recollection as well.
Back story: One of my tires developed a slow leak yesterday. It was time for new tires anyway so I took it in for a new set. I told the service writer (who seemed like a major n00b) that my right rear tire was leaking, and to be sure to check the valve stem for leaks. He said "oh, we always replace the valve stems." I asked him "even on cars with TPMS sensors?" and he replied "Yes."
So I'm guessing this n00b was clueless?

For me, I’d Google the car and TPMS and see what pops up. Then hit the shop tab.
But that’s me.

He should have put a new O-ring/gasket on it regardless. they are so cheap the my tire place will replace them free if they find that to be the cause of a leak.

I put new TPMS in along with new tires. The Tpms have batterys and they
dont last forever. Tires and TPMS are changed every 6 to 8 years.
Sometimes sooner.

My tires last ~10,000 miles - I'd go broke if I did that.
Yeah, I drive kind of assertively.
Last set of tires I bought for my wife's car, a 2011 BMW, I told the guy that it was probably time to change out the sensors. He said "Nah, those things last up to eight years." He didn't realize that the car was eleven years old.
He put a generic set in and they worked.

How aggressively can you drive a Bolt? :Jeff '79:
The sensor and stem is one unit and is programmed to the car with a scanner tool. My Tundra went 12 years on the original sensors before the batteries died. When I had my last set of tires, I chose to eliminate them. Toyota uses 5, one in the spare, and the cost was half the cost of the new set of tires. I've been driving over 45 years and always check my tires, so I have no need for a TPMS system on anything I drive.

Not really.
Every time that one guy posts, it reinforces my belief that all mechanics are dipshits.

No such thing as a dumb question :D
Can't give you an answer though because I've never left TPMS installed on any car I've owned long enough to find out.

What I used to tell the kids in the robotics club is: There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.

So it turns out they did not replace the valve stems. At best they replaced the O-rings.

Not to hijack my own thread, but did you ever build any robots for yourself, outside of the club? :waiting:

You would have to be more specific. Did I ever build a 130 pound competition robot myself outside of the club? No. Did my son and I build little robots for school projects, or stuff we were fooling around with? Yes.

Nothing that elaborate outside of the club. The club competition robots were more complex though, usually capable of completing numerous tasks, and at least a few tasks autonomously. The cost for parts and materials was thousands of dollars. While I was a mentor, the annual budget for the club went from about $12,000 to nearly $30,000, due not only to the cost of building better robots, but competitive success led to making Regional Champs every year except my first, and making it to World Champs once as well. With a better robot, we were also able to compete in off-season events, adding more cost to the budget.
Politics being what they are, eventually me and the other mechanical mentors I worked with all got run off the team. They have now returned to being a mediocre team at best.

Sounds like a great learning experience for the kids. I wish I'd had such a club when I was in school.

Need 100,000 of those, automated, on our southern border, with predator drone overwatch.

I ruined one the stems on my jeep tpms sensor. I was able to buy a new stem from Amazon. The tire place installed it for free.
