The Beach Boys thread caused me to recalled a song I hate with fire of a thousand suns; "Kokomo." And Kokomo led me directly to another one I hate; "We Built This City."

The Beach Boys were always bubble gum anyway. Good bubblegum in many cases but bubblegum nonetheless.

But "We Built This City?" From Grace Slick? The same Grace Slick that was gonna dose Nixon and gave us "White Rabbit?"

Both of these songs were awful but which is worse?

Both suck, but the biggest loser in the history of music, iMO, is the black-eyed fools.
All there songs suck, but igaf could have been written by a kindergartener.

Nothing gonna stop us now is equally bad compared to wbtc.

The Jefferson Airplane and Starship had some good tunes, 'We Built This City" was the worst tune they ever did. I can't imagine a cover band based on that song.

But then, I never figured out why people like Europe, Dio, or Iron Maiden, either.

And Pink Floyd sucks balls. They sucked then, and they suck now. And don't get me started about Rush. Jesus. Total crap.

The other day guy at the mall was going on and on to his friend about how Pink Floyd sucks, then I noticed he had a Nickelback shirt on.

That's when I new he was mentally ill.

Starship sold out with "We built this city", nothing more than a pop promo piece.

Foreigner is the worse bad of all times, everything sounds overproduced and the same. Same with the Dave Matthews Band.

Agreed. Kind of like the biggest song today, 'Flowers' by Miley Sirus. I can't recall a worse song anywhere, by anyone. Absolutely insipid. :seasix:

At the end of the day it all is…meh.

Yeah, some of it is incredible musical talent. And I can appreciate that. I admit that often I’ll hear a song and it may remind me of a time in life from the past. But I’m not spending any money or investing any effort on any of it.

At this point in life it’s just background noise.

You should have just stopped with the first paragraph, because shit went off the rails quickly after that. Europe? I mean, not the greatest hair band, not the worst. All else listed.....classics. If you had thrown in Yes, Boston, the Alan Parson's Project and Genesis, you'd have a well rounded "best of the best" list.

As to Jefferson Airplane and their subsequent iterations, they had plenty of material that was way better than "We Built this City," which wasn't a horrible song, but was so overplayed, it became friggin' annoying as heck.

And of course White Rabbit stands the test of time, too.

The Beach Boys are fine for a nostalgia trip, I wasn't ever a huge fan, didn't hate them, either.

I thanked your post, then removed it when I saw you had besmirched Foreigner. WTF? :toetap:

And that's all before we get to Foreigner 4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBgNh0s3Bmw

Foreigner 4 was one of those albums EVERYONE was listening to....the stoners, the rednecks, the bubblegum pop kids, the football team, band geeks...EVERYONE.

Foreigner 4 is right up there with the first album from Boston, Asia's first album, Def Leppard's Pyromania etc.

Foreigner WAS AOR (album oriented rock). They literally were the genre.

Pretty sure Giraffe (He/Him) came out in another thread and admitted to being a belieber, but he didn't like talking about it. I mean, I wouldn't really want to talk about it either, if that was me, frankly.

Not bad, but this one is up there for live performances.
The drum solo by Grohl, starting at 5:17, is unparalleled.
RIP Taylor!!

Yes, it is extremely strong. Here's another of the greatest live performances captured. Gary Brooker's voice was amazing up until the end.

Beyond the bubble gum hits like Philadelphia Freedom, and Crocodile Rock, this is a legitimately great double album:

All of the big bands want a $ hit. Singing and playing niche doesn’t pay the bills.Pop songs do. AKA Y&T “Summertime Girls.”

I lived in SF during that period and all bands were trying Pop songs-from Eddie Money to Rush.

My wife was a Beach Boys fan since she was a youngster before I knew her,
so I voted WBTC sux more.

Last week I was throwing out old shit that had sat in the basement,
unopened, from when we moved into our new house 40 years ago
(did I mention she NEVER threw anything out?).
Anyway, I box I had opened containd maybe 200 45 rpm records, plus
20 or so LP albums. The top one was a Beach Boys LP from the 60s.
Threw them all out. Kind of regret it now, probably worth some $$, but I
don't want to deal with it right now.
I know I have at least another 100 LPs down there, from the early 70s thru mid 80s. Some day I'll go thru them and see if they're worth anything.
R&R (now classic rock), Elvis, more beach boys, even Frank Sinatra :willy:
