View Full Version : Our last trip to NY
Today we drove 8 hours from our daughter's house in Roanoke VA to my mother in law's house near NYC. Great trip, except for the incessant rain, traffic, rude drivers and construction in Pennsylvania that has been ongoing for about the last 25 years.
This is the last trip of a 13 month oddessy, taking Baby Doll's mom from a recent widow with a large estate to settle, through a terminal cancer diagnosis, and to a nursing home close to us in North Carolina. After reviewing the possible transportation options, from first class airline and long distance ambulance, we chose to load her and some belongings into the Porsche Macan, leave at 4am during the week and reach her new home in NC not more than 12 hours later for check in.
We have a couple of days to button things up here, sell her car, sign some bank statements, load up paperwork, clothes and bedding. Then we're on our way out of New York, one last time. :seasix:
You are a good man for doing this.

Thanks for looking out for Mama Doll Yaddy!
Left NY at 4am this morning, arrived at her new home 2:30 pm.
Good on you for taking care of things. Glad to see that some parts of the state kept some statues.
I visited NY LI in June. Every time I leave I am happy to be gone and wonder how they let the place get so bad.
Good on you, Steve. We can only do the best we can for loved ones while they are still with us. And after they are gone, have no regrets on 'should have' or 'would have'.
When I was spending a lot of time dealing with my mom's terminal cancer and treatment and eventual hospice, estate liquidation, and death in 2021, ball-busting and Yadkin stalking on CFOT were a godsend and a real help in taking some of the load and overwhelming depression away. a welcome distraction. No regrets. Thank GOD I spent the last 5 years of her life before her 3 month illness taking her around the country to see old friends and trips. You are doing the right thing. 88849

Baby Doll is POA both financial and health-wise, so the burden has been on her 99%. Good thing she retired last year because it's nearly a full time job.
I just drive the car, and carry luggage.

You're 'being there' for them. That's all that's required. Men think they have to 'fix' everything or 'do' something, even when there is nothing they can do. Women just want them to be there for support. Driving the car and carrying the luggage is a huge blessing to both.

Yaddy, you have many good virtues, BUT you should have provided a better vehicle for transport, something made on our shore.

The Macan has a full adjustable air suspension and electronic shocks. In non-sport mode it rides like a dream. :yesnod:

Went thru the drill with my Dad, Mom and Mother-In-Law. Paralyzing accident, COPD and Alzheimers respectively. A tough heart-wrenching 8 years all told. And none of them even with meager assets had prepared legally or financially. As a PSA - you old f*ckers get your act together and embrace your mortality
Living will, medical directives, power of attorney and final pre-planned arrangements

That thing has more buttons than the Space Shuttle.

Beats the BMW dial thing. :seasix:
Fact is, it can be dialed in for the driver's intention. In this case, "Driving Miss Daisy".
On my way home up Rte.181, Sports Plus. That makes the dual clutch transmission read my mind, lowers the suspension, stiffens the shocks, and opens up the exhaust. :seasix:

We were lucky in that regard. Her late husband was a residential contractor with several wealthy clients, was eventually asked to be a bank director by one, and made a boatload. He set up his wife with a trust, the assets for her use "in the manner that she is accustomed to". Along with a nursing home approved by my wife (her old practice is the medical director for it), she's getting a dedicated provider. She can't outlive her estate.
Unfortunately, she's been spoiled. Today her ginger ale was too cold, her oatmeal too bland, and the classic Lexington barbeque served for lunch not for her New York taste. :Jeff '79:

At one point Federal employees were offered LTC (Long Term Care) Insurance, it was a crazy great deal with epic inflation-adjusted benefits - such a great deal that the plans features were reduced and premiums raised significantly after the first few years it was offered but wife and I got "grandfathered" in.
My financial guy says he's never seen a plan like it for the premiums we pay, between that, our original Federal pensions and stock portfolio, his Monte Carlo projections says there is literally nothing that can affect us financially short of a meteor hitting Earth.
Decades of planning, sacrifice, saving, good decisions and frugal living and now some jealous relatives tell us how "lucky" we are...
