View Full Version : Bad Concert Review: Cops Taze and Arrest Band Director After Football Game
....for having the audacity to let the band finish the song they were playing. Got to nip that kind of thing in the bud.
I'm thinking maybe attacking a band director in front of the whole band isn't the best move if you want to the community not to hate your guts. And (I speak as a former band geek), the band kids are good kids, the ones you'd think you'd want to like and respect you. They aren't the ones ending up as thug hoodlums on the streets.

Reasonable for the cops to ask them to wrap things up. Not reasonable for them to escalate to beating him up and tazing him, then dragging him off to jail in the span of under 4 minutes....for having the band play. Every kid there is going to hate the police from now, and assume they're scumbags because two egos met there that night.
The band director had a bit of an ego, too, in fairness.
I bet the band director lawyers up and gets a check.

He should, and the band members themselves should also sue. I can't even imagine the trauma of SEEING your band director brutalized right in front of you. These kids don't just see him for an hour during band class, there's hours and weeks of practice during the Summer, and also after school during football season. Be nice to see the school end up with new instruments, new uniforms....something.
When we won a UIL competition and wanted to celebrate, we'd parade march that afternoon or evening in the band director's neighborhood, culminating in a song in front of his house. All the neighbors got a kick out of it, everyone would be out in their yards watching us.
Fun for the band, and a sign of respect for the band director. I'm glad nobody got beaten up and arrested for that.

Our current place here in Mayberry the HS is right down the road. On Friday nights this time of the year we can hear the game off in the distance and when the band gets going it’s very cool.
We love it. A small piece of Americana.
I have my wife convinced that I can tell a 1st down from a touchdown by the bands reaction. :D

I usually have a lot of respect for cops but that was shitty what they did. Couldn't wait two minutes for high school kids to finish playing? :spdchk:

Post the address of the stadium and I'll call in a tip for the SWAT team to raid next week's game.
Those pigs were defiantly out of line in this case. Did those pigs even have jurisdiction on that field?

I can see the high school softball field from my living room windows, we are about 40 yards from the edge of school property. We hear every band practice, and every sports game very clearly, and yes, we like it. Both our kids did marching band, and my wife and I spent 6 years volunteering to support the band, and we loved every minute of that too.
I've posted it here before, but it bears repeating: The high school was built in 1956, this neighborhood was built in 1960-1961. No one who has ever lived in this neighborhood should have been surprised that they can clearly hear the goings on at the high school, yet every year, the town gets tons of complaints about the noise. At least so far, the town has had the sense to tell those assholes to **** off, and move if they don't like it.

That guy will not have to direct squat anymore when the slip-and-fall lawyers are done with the issue. He can sit on his pontoon boat and listen to real music with his feet up imbibing a beer.....for life.

Seems there is more to the story.... Go figure.
The guy basically told cops they'll leave when done and eventually put hands on a black officer which ended badly.
Sounds like they had reason to clear the stadium as soon as possible, knowing the indigenous population that most likely attends may have been necessary.
Regardless of reasons when cops say time to go wrap your shit up immediately and go.

That’s an FAFO situation in my mind.
He doesn’t own the stadium. He was told to stop. He refused a direct order. He said put me in jail, they tried, he resisted, got tazed.
It’s all on him. No pity from me.

Those police weren't just brusque, they came up downright belligerent and were spoiling for a fight. One of them mentions something about his troops coming in, like this is some kind of quelling a riot situation, or they're about to storm the Normandy beach. That's unacceptable. The police are there to be peacekeepers. Their job was to be collaborative with the band director and associated adult chaperones, not to storm in as an invading army. WTF?
And note that, the song was finished, the director moved to start leaving, presumably his students to follow, and THAT is when he was physically attacked.
If your goal was safely clearing out the stadium, why would you do that? Why would you create mass panic? Why shut off the stadium lights, plunging everyone trying to leave into darkness? None of it makes any sense if the goal is to get everyone safely out of the stadium and grounds. It DOES make sense if the goal is to act like storm troopers because it's fun. It makes sense if you want to BTFO of someone and make claims of "he swung first" with none of the spectators being able to see what actually happened.
Props for the use of “brusque”.

Anytime a black man shot by the police first thing everyone says is “comply and you’ll be safe.” Responding with “get out of my face” seven times isn’t complying. I don’t know what was said at the beginning of the video because I couldn’t hear it. I only briefly watch the video, but I’m not even sure what started the scuffle either.
All I know is that if the police told me to do something, whether they are right or wrong is for the courts to figure out…not me, defenseless out in the field, I’m going to do it and sue later.
