I like raw or grilled onions and peppers on my Zweigle's white hot, just had one yesterday. :hurray:

This isn't it, but similar minus the peppers:

Just ketchup.
Nuke the dogs for about a minute, buns for 10 seconds and you're ready to eat.

I don't care for hot dogs enough to ever buy them myself, but I do like buying the hot dog style sausage or knockwurst and serving them like a hot dog, on a bun. I use sliced jalapenos, chopped onion, and some sort of spicy mustard....that's it.

If it must be a hot dog, I'd prefer chili sauce, cheese, jalapenos and onions as toppers.

I prefer hot dogs Chicago style. One of the very few things I like about Chicago

Chicago-style hot dog
A Chicago-style hot dog, Chicago Dog, or Chicago Red Hot is an all-beef frankfurter on a poppy seed bun, originating from the city of Chicago, Illinois. The hot dog is topped with yellow mustard, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt.

Hot dogs MUST be grilled, with a nice char on them. Ketchup is fine, that's what normal people put on them despite what the naysayers say. https://i.postimg.cc/y60mLtFJ/smiley-bashhead.gif

This one needs a little more charring, and some onions and peppers on it. A white hot ("porker") invented by Zweigle's (https://zweigles.com/products/skinless-white-1lb/) in nearby Rochester:

I bought 2 jars of that a couple of months ago.

I watched a YT video where a person made that from scratch.... decided it was too much work... bought the Sabrett instead.

It is wonderfully delicious on hot dogs, but can overwhelm whatever it's put on. I learned to apply it sparingly... makes dawgs delicious.

I'm not a "rule follower," I do what suits me best. :seasix:

Like drinks: I don't measure anything nor do I necessarily use the correct "by the book" ingredients.

Of course mixing a good liquor with soda pop or anything else (beside ice/water) is a capital crime and should be punished with "hanged from the neck until dead."

Same for defiling a good steak by putting A-1 or any other sauce on it. https://i.postimg.cc/y60mLtFJ/smiley-bashhead.gif

Ketchup is fine on two instances of hot dogs:

1. When combined with freshly chopped white onions, sweet pickle relish and yellow mustard.

2. On a slice of American cheese pre-cooked hot dog run through the broiler at Arf & Barf (Dog and Suds).

I picked up a jar like a month or so after it was on shark tank. Sweet mustard with filler, basically. Not worth the price but it tasted fine, forgettable so it's not something that I'd crave or make routine.

I've tried it. Ketchup is for burgers and fries. And hash browns.

I checked into Sabrett's sauce and it's a NY thing. Recipe on line better than the jar stuff is the consensus. But since it is based in a tomato sauce, no thanks.

Recipe calls for onions, tomato paste, olive oil, and vinegar. No thanks. :yaddy:

I never make hot dogs at home. In recent years I get a Zweigle's porker (https://zweigles.com/products/white-pop-open-1lb/) for lunch at our Tuesday haunt, The American Hotel, (https://americanhoteloflima.com/) along with a bowl of the various homemade soups. :)

Going to that hotel is a step back in time: Has not been modernized, still has a mechanical "ka-ching ka-ching" cash register, paper towels in men's room has an actual crank instead of a stupid electronic trigger, has the old tin ceilings throughout from days of yore. One of the dining rooms has historical pictures on the walls of the place going back to the 1800s. The current owner is 75-ish and is the second generation to run it.

I did. When we got back from a trip to upstate NY in 2017 or 2018. Stopped overnight in Olean on our way back from Buffalo and discovered the place. Just the juiciest, best tasting, most tender roast beef I've ever had, and I'm a meat guy. Reasonable prices too. We also dropped by the Cutco Cutlery factory there for a quick visit. They've been making great cutlery for 80 years now. I used to sell it door to door in college. Still have my mom's 1960 Cutco stuff and my 1979 stuff and use it daily. Great quality, but expensive and it was hard to sell to pregnant single moms living in apartments back then.

Our Monday and Thursday lunch haunt is upscale from a diner, and they have prime rib on Thursdays through Saturdays. But it's not ready until 4 PM and despite me begging them I can't get it any sooner. Haven't had any prime rib in years.
