I've been curious about this motorcycle for a few years now so today I rode out to a local Ducati dealer and took one out.
This is a Ducati Diavel;
V4
1,158 cc
168 hp
465 lb.
MSRP $26,995
The black one was the demo bike, but they do have a red available. (It'd be red for me) This ain't no Harley. :Jeff '79:
Thomas is coming out as bike-curious.
I mean, I guess it really wasn't a surprise. NTTAWWT
Edit: Those bikes aren't to my taste, personally, but I can recognize work of art styling, and they're no doubt scary fast. I wouldn't be coordinated enough to do justice to those bikes.

Beautiful motorcycles. Had 3 of them over the years. The “Ferrari” of motorcycles.

Pulled up some vids to hear what it sounds like. Was hard to hear anything with those tennis shoe wearing motormouths constantly yapping away. What little I did hear didn't thrill me.
HP isn't everything IMO. Gotta have the torque. Doubt it'd pull away from my Valk before I hit the aerodynamic drag wall. No problem though, I'm not a triple digit kinda guy.

My H-Ds make gobs of low end torque which means you're not constantly sloshing through the gear box. This Ducati was MUCH different. I was only out for a hour and I bet I changed gears 2000 times. :Jeff '79:

Yup, that one video I watched the guy wanted to see if he could complete turning a corner from a stop before needing to shift up to second
Almost got squished from behind by a jacked up monster truck once.
Stopped on a yellow light to let the oncoming car complete his turn. When I heard tires squallering up behind me I whacked open the throttle aiming to t-bone that turning car. The guy saw what was happening and pegged it to get out of my way. Super close call. Point being I hit 90mph in first gear... Letting off the throttle isn't much of an option when holding on has priority
I appreciate the older 2 cylinder Ducs.
These newer models you posted, not so much.
I'm too old for that.

My 2021 F250 Platinum has painted bumpers, I like it. Was not a fan of the dash/interior on the Silverado then but the new one looks a lot better.
I am not in the market for a new truck (shocking huh? :Jeff '79:) but if I was I'd probably give the Silverado HD a serious look. I like them and they are much more available than the SuperDuty. I think Ford is moving to a custom order business plan for the SuperDuty trucks.

I dislike painted bumpers. In less upside down world times, painted bumpers were for work trucks, Chrome bumpers were for the nicer, more well appointed trucks. The Custom and Cheyenne packages had painted bumpers, the Silverado had chrome bumpers.

I hate to break it to you, but you'll see nothing but that big 240 tire from the word go. The Duc has 94lb-ft of torque vs a Valkyrie at about 96... and it weighs 200lbs less. Not to mention traction control, way stickier tire, etc.

Short answer, the resale on the Diavel is pretty awful as it is a bike that clearly has divided opinions. Other than that. They're awesome and they certainly get attention everywhere they go. The days of nightmare Ducati maintenance are pretty well behind. They still have a significant amount, but nothing like the seemingly daily valve jobs of the older versions. They are also oddly comfortable to ride (at least in my opinion).

Assuming I haven't made any modifications? But I have and the torque is a just a tad bit more than 96 ft-lbs. As for weight, I'd say it's more like a 300 pound difference... That must have been one of those off-road motorcycles with huge suspension travel.
I owned three bikes. My last was a '79 Kawasaki KZ650C. The C meant it had cast wheels and triple disc brakes. I used to practice stopping at speed to keep the rear tire planted. Two discs upfront meant that thing could stop on a dime.

Sorry man, unless you have something beyond "normal" modifications, that Duc will still obliterate it. If you want to start counting modifications, a simple tune and exhaust puts the Diavel at another level.
Not really sure what year or exact model your Valkyrie may be, but this was the OLD Diavel... which is slower than the new V4.

Here’s where I’m at with the whole deal. In about two weeks I’m going to be working 7 days a week, 10 hours a day until early December. I might get out for a short putt but my riding season here in MN effectively over. Getting a new motorcycle with only two weeks left in the season doesn’t make a great deal of sense.
That being the case this’ll wait until next spring when I can get it and ride it.

This thread got me thinking about my favorite bikes...
The white 1198 was an absolute beast. 200+ whp and absolutely violent. No traction control, no anything. An absolute death machine. But so damn fun.
The Aprilia is without a doubt the "best" bike I've ever been on. It is so indescribably fast that ... well... I can't describe it. No idea how much power it had, but with the exhaust, tune, etc it was certainly a few over the already insane 201hp factory number. Launch control, wheelie control, stability control, crazy ABS. In the exact opposite approach as the 1198, it makes it almost impossible to put it on the ground. I'm a skeptic of technology in general, but it was truly incredible.
But...
But.
None of them will ever top the 1 bike I wish I had back.
My 2001 748S.
It was far from the fastest. Not the most reliable. Uncomfortable. And still the most amazing motorcycle I have ever owned. That sound.

I haven't owned a street bike in over 30 years since a good friend riding ahead of me died in my arms after a lady pulled out in front of him. It's a day that's burned into my brain forever. I had to quit motocross racing in my 50s after too many crashes, all my fault, screwed up my back.

No, I think it's obvious which ones are more dangerous than others. Just look at HP/ weight ratios.
A lot of it depends on the rider. Less mature, less experience, equals more likelihood of an accident. And of course, higher speeds. Add in car/ truck drivers who don't see you, and hence, organ donation.

Not sure I agree with that.
An idiot on a Honda Shadow is going to be dead just as fast as a good rider on that batshit crazy 1198 that I posted.
HP/Weight is pretty irrelevant to safety, especially on newer bikes. That Aprilia was the most powerful bike I've personally ever ridden and weighs half as much as a big Harley. With traction control, stability control, launch control, wheelie control, etc, etc, etc... it was also almost the easiest bike I've ever ridden. It would peel the skin off of your face when you launched it, but it was easy to control. It would stop on a dime in a panic stop, even with a panicked rider that grabs too much brake. It helps if you hit gravel or if a rider screws up and simply rides beyond their skill level into a corner.
Idiot riders are infinitely more dangerous than any type of bike. You can make the argument that there is a direct correlation between idiots and specific types of bikes and I will absolutely agree, but the bike itself being inherently "more dangerous"... not so much.

I spent 3 months in the hospital because of a motorcycle wreck. The minute I was able I bought another bike and kept riding.
This isn’t some ‘Get back on the horse’ feel good story. Speaking only for myself the risk will always be worth the reward and preserving my life at any cost isn’t in my makeup per se.
I know a guy who chocked on a ****in’ tortilla chip and DIED if such I thing can even be imagined. Hell my own father missed a step at his lake home, fell, hit his head and it killed him.
Best chances to stay out of trouble on a motorcycle: You must be a 101% defensive driver. You must assume that nobody sees you, and every car at a crossroad or pulling out of a driveway will pull out in front of you. Be ready with the horn, high beam button, and/or brake.
I crashed twice in 1972, but no other vehicles were involved (but a lot of alcohol was ). Worst I got was a bruised kidney which healed 100%.
I finally sold my last bike in 2015 at age 65. Too paranoid to ride anymore. As I got older I realized how fragile our bodies are.
A 5 MPH crash in a parking lot, which if car-to-car would barely scrape a little paint, could throw you off the bike and if you landed wrong could break your neck or back (having major age-related neck surgery in 2011 didn't help with that scenario).
Having said all that, I had a lot of fun over 45 years of riding -- no regrets. Endless bar-hopping, late night racing, went to Florida and back and numerous lesser trips.
Not sure I agree with that.
An idiot on a Honda Shadow is going to be dead just as fast as a good rider on that batshit crazy 1198 that I posted.....

It’s the other vehicles on the road that make me consider selling mine. It’s almost more stressful than relaxing to ride now. Covid made people extremely impatient and the road rage is insane. Add to that the distracted and oblivious drivers, and it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

Ridiculous argument. Truly. If you accept this, you’ve resigned yourself to crashing and in your case dying. You don’t think this way when you get behind the wheel of your Prius do you? “It’s not if, it’s when.’” Or my other favorite “There are two kinds of riders. Those who’ve gone down and those who will.” Why is a motorcycle any different than a car? It’s not a forgone conclusion you’re gonna crash. That’s silly.
You think crashing a Bagger at 80 mph is somehow less damaging than crashing your H2 R?
An old saying:
Spend any time riding horses or motorcycles and eventually you will get hurt.

I saw The Grim Reaper one night, off in the distance, back around 1977.
I had a 1974 900 Kawasaki then which was supposed to do 140 MPH; it was stock except for a header. I was drunk one night and decided to wind it out, which I did on a nearby parkway. It was bouncing at 135+ and almost 9,000 RPM which was the redline in high gear.

My FCSTC has a 200 in the rear. 4500 miles and I’m at the wear indicators. I’ve owned this thing 15 years, so it isn’t an anomaly.

Love the pic:seasix: just wanted to see what choices are out there bang for the buck wise. The stock ones are pretty pricey, but everything is these days, and it has been many years since I had to purchase any.:D
