Giving off major “Jurassic Park” vibes, a creature captured in Mississippi broke the record for the longest alligator ever captured in the state.
While its length — 14 feet, 3 inches — is astonishing, so too is its mass. The alligator captured on the second day of Mississippi’s hunting season weighed 802.5 pounds with a belly girth of 66 inches, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

I've seen an 11 footer in my lake and many, many smaller ones, seems like when they hit 8' they start to broaden out and really become behemoths, and, scary...
One more reason not to be a flatlander.

That is huge for a gator. We had a 16 footer get hit and killed by a boat in the Ashley river a couple years ago. There are bigger ones out there..

:hurray: No gators in my trout stream. I just wish you would stop pissing in it.

Several years ago one of our Superintendents was bitching about all the pictures of Alligators being hung around the fab shop.
“Look at this bullshit. We used to have white tails and Fords. Now these ‘you-alls’ show up and hang ****in’ pictures of Toyotas and Alligators.”

Skeptical - no 16' gator has been recorded from what I see, there is one "claim" of a 19' footer but no evidence..

When the swamp show catching gators first started they would often mention a sensational claim like:
"this 11ft., thousand pound behemoth is patrolling the waters looking for meals of dinosaurs and cattle..."
People bought into these claims. :yesnod:
I asked Troy (was at an outdoor expo) about this, his answer:
"people will believe anything..." :funnier: :funnier:

Last week a buddy who lives 5 or so miles away said he saw a cougar crossing the road by his house. Somebody else saw it and took a pik, and it was confirmed by the NYS DEC.
I think the whole story is BS, especially how my buddy described the animal.
I've heard rattlesnake stories around here since I've lived here -- 41 years -- but only stories, no evidence. 60-80 years ago, I'm sure there were.
The nearest rattlers are in Letchworth State Park, 30 or so miles away. This was confirmed by a family member who is the top dog DEC guy at the park.

I have mentioned this before. A few years back I heard a couple very loud noises late at night. By coincidence my SIL who is a serious animal lover played some sounds of animals making noise. I picked the one that sounded like what I heard and guess what it was a Mountain Lion!
A friend that lives about a 1/2 mile from me picked up on a game camera and two security cameras a cougar, AKA mountain lion.(one was a very clear picture) He told me he also heard the noise.
He called Encon and a couple showed up at his house,by chance I was there and after review of his picture theys told him NO, no cougar. He pushed the issue and one officer a bit friendlier than the other told him no cougars here. That for some reason was a directive from higher up. Why I have no clue.

We have a creek/conservation area that runs through the middle of the island, with a walking trail along a lot of it. Took this a few years ago. Not a great pic, but you can see a mama 'gator on the right side with little ones on and around it. We counted 10 little ones.

The poachers killed the Greenway. Now you rarely see any gators in it and it's also not so green anymore from people who live on the island have said here at work.

We walk or ride our bikes on it frequently. It hasn't changed since we've lived here and we still see lots of wildlife, including gators.
Our house backs up to it where there's no trail through it. Lots of wildlife back there, haven't seen a gator yet but everything else.

A lady who retired from here was telling me about the poachers and how the gator numbers have severely dwindled and not recovered or they simply never returned to certain sections. Can't remember exactly what she said.

It would be much more believable in the Adirondacks than around here.
About 20 years ago the son of local bar owner showed me a printout of a mountain lion chasing a deer; he said it was from the south end of Hemlock Lake, 15 or so miles away.
I always take this stuff with a grain of salt. Looking closer, the deer had branched antlers -- it was a Muley, not a Whitetail.
There were some DEC guys across the road from me that winter, and I went over to see what they were doing -- they were checking on a bear den up in the woods.
I told them about the picture and they laughed, they'd seen it before and noted the antlers. He said there weren't any cougars around here -- that they knew of anyway.
Twenty years later, who knows? Maybe one passing through -- plenty of deer around and we all wish they'd kill most of them. But my buddy who told me the story of a cougar by his house is a Brooklyn native and if he really saw one, then from his description it would have been very small. I don't think he knows how big they really are.

They just spotted a gator in water near New Jersey - not kidding, they suspect it was someone's released pet:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/new-jersey-alligator-on-the-loose-reptile-evades-police-capture/ar-AA1g0qHf
I suspect once the animal hears peoples' accent in that area it will rapidly swim south.
