True but not much help without knowing what you’re selling. I could put a $10,000 Les Paul Custom Shop guitar beside a $2,000 Les Paul Standard and they’d be indistinguishable from one another if you didn’t know what you were looking at.
A beat up looking guitar might be vintage instrument or a brand new ‘Relic.’
Post a few pics maybe we can get you pointed in the right direction.

Post up some photos. Model numbers and serial numbers, if you have them. From a distance, a Mexican Strat looks a lot like an American Strat. That's why the serial numbers will be helpful.

True. I just bought a Peavey Predator Strat clone and the serial number showed it was made in 1992 in America instead of in Mexico like the later ones. The US made quality is much superior and commands a premium..
If its an extensive collection maybe consult a local music store for an appraisal. You could have an early Martin Dreadnaught worth 10’s of 1,000’s in there somewhere. You can also go to www.sweetwater.com in their used/gear exchange section and compare prices to anything you have.
Condolence on your loss.

And look at Guilds. The ones made in Westerly, RI are the ones to look for. When Fender bought Guild, they moved production to Corona, CA in 2001 and then moved production again in 2004 to Tacoma, WA. At this time, Guild stopped making all the electric guitars and only built acoustics. In 2008, they moved the factory to New Hartford, CT and in 2014 Fender sold Guild to Cordoba and moved the factory again to Oxnard, CA.
The value of the used Guilds after 2001 is significantly less than the later years due to the constant factory changes and the luthiers working on them. The serial numbers will tell the tale.
Gibson quality suffered similar setbacks due to factory changes and losing old-time luthiers.
I can't help with guitar valuation, but condolences on your loss. :sadangel:
