View Full Version : Glad it wasn't the Porch
Got rear ended by a 91 year old guy driving his minivan. Poor dude, Korean war vet like my dad. He totaled his car. Straight section of road, clear weather and daylight. I saw him behind me and slowed down gradually, with my turn signal on to turn right onto a gravel parking lot. He said that he just didn't see me.

What happens if he was uninsured?
He can make a claim against his insurer under either his collision or his uninsured motorist coverage. Each option comes with a deductible. In theory, his insurer will pay out, then subrogate against the at fault party, and if they collect from the at fault party, they'll issue him a second payment for his deductible. In practice, that's a rarity.....the kind of people who don't carry insurance don't pay up and most are judgement proof, in a "can't get blood from a stone" type situation.

Exactamundo My split window was nailed by a Latino uninsured jerk (doubt he was in the US legally) in an Escalade - a damned Escalade and my company had to cover repairs (National Corvette Museum) - the bastard didn't even have any assets to go after. He even tried to sue me but got shut down quickly.
Depending on state this victim could try a DV (Diminished Value) claim but if the other party is uninsured it'll just be a bookkeeping exercise.
A PSA: If you live in FLA and many other states get "stacked" uninsured coverage:

FWIW, I've had Travelers for years and can't say enough good things about them. My local indy agent is also first class, and that helps.
Five years ago a deer jumped out, I was doing about 50, and did $11,400 worth of damage on my truck.
https://i.ibb.co/jDWz1MQ/SANYO-DIGITAL-CAMERA.jpg
The guy who fixed it (a buddy) said the appraiser was first-class, didn't question anything, upped the dollars as more things wrong were found. I had zero issues, couldn't have asked for a smoother transaction.
And now my '23 Mazda has a gouge down the side, is going to the body shop in a couple weeks, and so far my interaction with Travelers has been first class.
Unusual in this day and age of dealing with mostly shit companies.

In NYS and Florida you can write a letter to teh DMV requesting they review a person ability to drive as a family member. In both states Doctors can do the same. We got my fathers doctor to write the letter and Da had his license suspended within a week.
Looks like pretty minor bumper damage. Hitch probably saved you from any more damage.
Bumper probably contacted at least one side of the bedside. I wouldn't be surprised if the bed was pushed a little off center. Checking the gap between the cab and the bed on both sides will tell the tale, also you should see if there are scratches, gouges, etc., where the bumper has impacted the bed.
The nice thing about a truck is, unless the bedside is crumpled or bowed, simply adjusting the bed on the frame to make the gap by the cab even, replacing the bumper and frame horns should do it, vs. the guy with the plastic bumper whose vehicle is now not able to be safely driven without repair.
I definitely feel more vulnerable driving a Vette or my Cruze, especially at stop lights, vs. my truck.

From the minivan damage, it didn't look serious enough to bend the frame of the truck. Keep in mind the plastic and cardboard bumpers, plus the paper thin hood and front fenders are designed as a crumple zone, to absorb the impact to protect the driver. That also seems like it would protect whoever the driver hits.
Maybe we have some engineers here who could speak on that theory?

Step. Driver's side. Knee saver.
The truck is the correct size and fits in my garage.
My neighbor Rick went through a 40 year string of Ford trucks. Back in the day a 350, then a few 250s, then a long line of 150s. A new one every year. Then he drove mine, and within a month or two traded his in for a correct size truck. Our dealer here didn't have a fully equipped Ranger, so he bought a Taco.

That's my thinking. It was like a soup can hitting an anvil. Cars are sacrificial; trucks not so much.
I was hardly jolted when he hit me. I instinctively released the brakes, and was expecting a good jolt. Fact is, I hardly felt the impact.

I have never heard of an aluminum ball mount. What's the rating on that? Class I? II? And why not just leave it connected? It would help protect you in the event of a rear end collision.....like what just happened.
What's the rest of the damage? Did the bumper damage the bed?

I was looking for a stainless steel one but couldn't find one that matched the rating on my truck. The aluminum one met the criteria. Without checking, I think it's 8000#.
Right now the bed is full of trash, so I can't tell if it's damaged. Doubt it, as the tailgate seems to operate normally. The transfer station is closed tomorrow, I'll clean it out on Thursday, and have an appointment with the repair shop on Friday.

The whole point is, you're making this more complicated than it has to be. I'm assuming old guy isn't going to contest fault. You are the claimant, meaning, you make a claim on the old guy's policy, they determine liability and coverage, they inspect, they pay. Hell, they probably have their own pro shop that they'll guarantee work at, too, if that makes a difference.
Involving your insurer 1) leaves a record of claim activity, which insurers don't like, and 2) just makes things harder. They'll do the same legwork, investigate coverage, determine liability, inspect the truck, and will pay part of the claim, then they'll contact the old guy's insurance, make the claim, his insurance will investigate, determine liability, then cut a check to your insurance company, then you'll have to chase down your insurance company to get the deductible amount.
Why not just cut out the middleman entirely? You really only need to bring your carrier into it if the other guy's carrier balks at paying for some reason.

Supplemental Claims - for damage found subsequent to the initial crash estimate is not some favor they're doing you - its common practice. Letting you use your own shop is also pretty much the norm now too. The Zelle thing is a bit weird, an insecure means of transferring money and no recourse if somebody scams you. Since my Ranger is about the same size as a 70's F150, I consider it full sized.
That's like saying that you consider Dylan Mulvaney a woman because he wears a dress. Rangers are not full size trucks.

I've been using Zelle and it's a great way to send and receive money, it's already "built into" your banking system, so no extra entity like PayPal. I added a new recipient the other week and they had like two or three authentications to make sure I really wanted to add that person and send the money.
How do you send money electronically?

The point is, over the decades all trucks have gotten bigger. Today's mid-size are *nearly* as big as the old regular trucks.
Measure however you like: bed size, gross weight, payload, wheel size, horsepower, yadda yadda. Nobody cares.

Hauling and towing are only two things to do with a truck. I have mine primarily as a second vehicle that can haul furniture, trash, and small to medium size loads for the construction of my addition. Has not failed me yet.

Heaviest thing that I would ever tow is my TBird, or similar sized car. Maybe an old Rolls if I could find just the right deal. The 'Bird is 4400#, trailer weight maybe 1500, so say 6000#. Bump up a bit more for the Rolls. Still under the limit, and again, not a typical day. More like once/ 5 years or so.

Appears to meet the towing needs. Be careful on the handling and most importantly the stopping. And keep an eye on the payload capacity (and tongue weight / hitch limits) and of course GCVW. :seasix:

After seeing the pics, yes, frame damage does seem possible, although it could still be a matter of the bed shifting on the frame from the impact. That definitely needs to go to a quality body shop.

Modern in Boone, as recommended by my insurer (Nationwide). They figure a five day job, and I'll get a loaner truck during that time.
Travelers just sent me about $2100 for a preliminary settlement. I'm thinking the total bill will be two or three times that.
Agree that the frame now has some sway. Any competent body shop can hang some targets and run their laser and get you a printout. Body on Frame vehicles are pretty easy to return to pre-accident condition. Modern unibody cars, not so much, since the body is like a coke can that gets crumpled. You can un-crumple it, but it's never as strong. Body on frame? Piece of cake.
My theory on the accident? Old vet was blinded by the sun reflecting off of the back of Yadkin's bald pate as Yadkin was pulling the e-brake and drifting into the gravel lot at speed---- Fast and Furious style. Old vet was overwhelmed and so impressed he froze at the controls and whacked Yaddie.
They're just a bunch of small-town car freaks.
That's all they are.
But I tell you one thing, mister.

The beds on these trucks are mounted solidly. If just the bed shifted, it would be torn at the mounting points. Also, to shift just the bed, it would have had to have been hit on the bed itself, not the bumper attached to the frame.
I'm 99% sure they are going to find some frame sway in the frame itself. Get that pulled and the gaps will line back up.

Meh. No status symbol needed. I like the steel wheels and rubber floor. So easy to clean. Utility.
Agree with what is called "Diminished Value", even if it is returned to pre-collision condition. The stigma remains and can adversely affect resale value. Not your fault, so don't pay the penalty, IMO.

Yadkin GOLD. Rotating tires side to side. Only useful if your front or rear end is so out of whack you're chewing up a tire on one side and want to extend your tire replacement time due to being too cheap to fix what's broken. I can see a teenager doing this, but not a grown up with a bank account. Thanks, Varla.

Which was previously stated as to why you had to do SOMETHING, even if it was wasted effort. No reason to rotate side to side. Unless you are a 17 year old trying to get down to the steel cords evenly due to worn suspension and steering parts.
40-ish years ago, when the C4 came out, it had staggered wheels, but the same size tires. The tire guys where I worked had to dis-mount the front and rear tires and switch them to the different rims. And re-balance them. A HUGE PITA. Glad I was a tune up and engine guy. :)

Agreed. The main reason I got rid of my 4Runner and did not get a Tacoma was due to small, cramped seats and interior space. The Tundra has a much more comfortable cabin and seating, which as an old guy, is more important each year. Well worth the small penalty to pay on the trail with a slightly bigger rig.

I'm into the luxury and comfort thing, but not in my truck.
When I bought my '12 Grand Cherokee, I had every intention of keeping the price as low as possible. Then the salesman opened the door of a loaded Overland, and I was hooked. My budget instantly went out the window.
Same thing when I bought my Porch. I had a budget of $50k, drove a Jaguar, an Audi, a VW. The Mercedes dealer never called me back so I didn't drive one of those. Then I drove the Makin' and was hooked. Blew that budget out the window.
Both times Baby Doll was pissed. And, both times, after riding in the cars, she realized I had made great decisions.

Varla: "I don't beat clocks. Just people."
:seasix:
Porch 356 would be the only one worth owning out of all Kraut cars IMO even though it's just a glorified air-cooled VW Bug
Faster Pussycat is a close competitor to Two Lane for having some epic movie dialog of days gone by...
Varla really was a true badass!
My brother knew her (Tura Satana) back in the '90's. Very nice lady. Very conservative, was married to a cop. Agree on the 356, also the early 911. Any air cooled kraut-wagon was top shelf.
If you haven't seen Russ Meyer's 1967 Common Law Cabin, you should. Same guy wrote the dialog for it, and he stars in it as well. (Jack Moran). Featuring Babette Bardot and others. 84240

Bad news, Floriduh plates, and the inside smells like something died in it. Hitting it hard with Fabrezz.

It's no easy task. Driving 15mph under the speed limit. Slowing down because there is a curve, intersection, or a car approaching from the opposite direction. Braking uphill. Driving half into the opposing lane. Stopping at an intersection where the stop sign is on the cross street. Not stopping for a stop sign to get in front of a truck on the highway...
I don't think that I'm up for this.:o
So, what the VB wants to know is, is their frame damage? What, exactly, is being repaired?

They no longer make a 6' bed.
Have the wife drive the truck in front of you and follow several car lengths behind and see if you can see all 4 tires. Super easy to check. A diamond condition in the frame causing dog tracking is not often felt to the driver if all the wheels are lined up. Only noticeable by car following.

In FL that would be like $15K, plus another $20K for attorney fees.
They no longer make a 6' bed.
I see that they dropped the SuperCab (6' bed) and only offer the SuperCrew (5' bed).
That seems odd after all the engineering and tooling to produce the new Ranger including the SuperCab. :island14:
6' bed= usable as a truck.
5' bed= you ****ed up and should have bought an SUV with at least enclosed crappy storage space.
I laugh at all the huge, gargoyle-styled new super trucks with huge cabs, super high ride heights, huge tires, and abysmal fuel mileage running around with tiny little 5' beds. Useless.

Look at the low labor rates. It's obviously negotiated by the insurance company.

On the way into Boone I brought back a ten-foot length of 1-1/4" copper pipe back to the Fergusons. When I carry stuff like that in the Ranger's 6-foot bed I set it in diagonally with the tailgate up and it hangs out maybe 6" to one side- not past the side mirrors. I tried that with this F150 5-foot bed, the pipe hung out so far to the side to be a hazard. So I had to open the rear window of the cab and carry it through the window. :Jeff '79:

That is one HELL of a dent from a cart. Looks like the cart had 2 90 pound bags of concrete on board and was shoved with force into your truck.
That SUCKS. That said, the big dent should pop out, and the small point of impact isn't that bad. Time to call your insurance.
There is a reason for Cart Narcs!!

When I saw it I figured someone must have forced the cart into my truck with their vehicle. But the witness said that he saw it hit, taken by a wind gust. These is a slope to the lot in that direction, but it's not much, maybe 2-3%.
We filed a claim with Home Depot. I doubt that will cover it but the store service manager was very helpful. After that, my insurance has a $1000 deductible. A paintless dent removal may take care of it, and the cost of that would be less than the deductible.
Not liking the three deep hit marks or the dent progressing through the body line. If paintless can get the three low spots out, I'll be impressed. I have to confess, I've never seen a worse shopping cart ding. Ever.

Your "Witness" was the perp. The cart could not have caused the damage to your sissy truck...it does not line up. You being a Engineer should know that...get the weight of the cart and do some simple math. The force that would of taken to cause that damage as Gto said is much much more. Not to mention nothing lines up and no damage to the cart. Unless your truck is made of .015 aluminum i call BS. Maybe someone didn't like you taking up two spots.
This is a major reason why I like Aldi. No shopping cart projectiles all around. And at other stores, it's why I always park in the south 40. Having said that, I came very close to being Yaddie. I was at the Walmart near my home, it was VERY windy, and I came out, and a cart is barreling toward my car, parked out all by itself. It was a matter of seconds, I was able to push my cart in front of the out of control cart and stop it just a few feet from what would have been a hard hit to my front fender.
I wish all stores would go with the European model, require a deposit for a cart. That would completely solve the problem.

Same thing happened to my wife's Accura 10 years ago at Sams Club parking lot. We came out and there was a cart beside the car. Big dent at the front of the driver's door and fender. Had to have been hit by a car. Video showed the wind brought a cart down the incline.
The parking lot has multiple angles and no level area. I now park in an area where if it ever happened again, I'm at the top of one of these areas where if the carts comes down at speed, has to come back up for a ways and probably stop before it ever hit

Lemme help you out, Mr. Massachushits.
Given:
Ws (space) = 10'
Wt (truck) = 6'
Wc (cart) = 2'
(Ws-Wt)/2 = space left between the truck and the line
Now, compare that result with Wc.

Just looked. Beginning in 2019, Ford went with steel cargo beds. Not the aluminum crap. I'm not a math guy, but I'm pretty fair at backyard physics, and IMO, the cart lacks the mass to do that amount of damage....particularly since it even buckled the body line, which is the stiffest part of the panel. If an empty cart hit hard enough to do that, it would have to be going so fast (60-100 mph) that it would be crumpled. To me, it looks like a car hit it, or as I said earlier, a fully loaded cart weighing over 100 pounds was shoved into it. Piss-poor parking job or not. :)

Yes, the body is steel- I just verified with a magnet.
Again, that was my thought at first, that the cart by itself could not have done that much damage. But I have to go with the facts in evidence, in this case the eyewitness that volunteered the information to me.
Himey's and Masshole's theories are based on the type of human behavior that exists in their worlds. Here in flyover country, folks are generally honest and law-abiding.
When I lived in eastern Massachusetts it was common for someone to vandalize property that they did not own if it was new or nice. Especially if it was expensive, or well kept, and they could never see themselves owning it. Massholes tend to be envious of others and won't hesitate to engage in criminal activity to make themselves feel superior, using some deluded logic.

This is a valid point I had not considered. My experience as well. Conservatives tend to live in more rural areas, and conservatives are respectuful of others, the opposite of liberals. Have a good friend who recently sold a '71 Mercury Cyclone for $$$ that he had to re-paint because it got vandalized in Mill Valley, CA for having a BUSH sticker on the bumper back when Bush was running for office. Not a republican within a mile of that place. Nasty, angry, militant do-nothing liberals. That said, man, what a hit.
