What does the pitcher have to do if he tries to pick off the runner at first?

Can't move toward the plate like it's a pitch. That would be a balk.

What about stepping off the rubber?

You mean without a balk?

Not throw to a base without moving his lead foot towards that base?

Not stopping his motion from the stretch?

Starting his motion without completing the throw?

Failing to begin his motion from the pitching rubber?

There's more but google is your friend....

Marlins reliever, Dunn, threw to first without leaving the rubber and his right leg went mostly towards HP. Clearly a balk.

In the Reds/Marlins game, the pitcher clearly left his foot on the rubber and threw the ball to first while stepping mostly towards home. The umpire, Angel Hernandez (typical of that pathetic excuse), did not call anything.

He can step off the back of the rubber and do pretty much anything. If he does not, his leading foot must be beyond 45 degrees away from home when it lands.

Back foot stayed on rubber and leading foot was at most 10 degrees from home.

Sounds like an uncalled Balk....

He doesn't have to do anything, it's not like he has to put an ad in the classifieds.

If you're wondering about a balk.....

What does the pitcher have to do if he tries to pick off the runner at first?

Throw to first with the first baseman near the bag.
A pitcher only has to step off if he fakes to a base, and throws to another.

First baseman is always near the bag when there is a runner.

First baseman is always near the bag when there is a runner.

Normally, unless there is a runner on second. BUT, it is specifically mentioned in the rule that the baseman be close enough to make the play.

What about the direction he moves his body? Does he have to move towards first or any direction he feels like but still throw to first?

If he makes a move to towards the plate and then throws to first, its a balk. Otherwise, he can move towards third or second and then throw to first for the pickoff.

He made the move to about 6' to the left of the catcher and threw to first. Left when looking at the catcher.
