View Full Version : He owned and drove the same car for 82 years.
Per Apex Automotor
I thought the group might like this story about Mr. Allen Swift, Born: 1908: Died 2010, he owned and drove the same car for 82 years.
Mr Swift of Springfield, MA received this 1928 Rolls-Royce Piccadilly P1 Roadster from his father, brand new, as graduation gift in 1928.
He drove it up until his death in 2010 at the age of 102.
It was donated to a Springfield museum after his death, maybe some US based Apex members would like to check it out.
It has over 170,000 miles on the clock and still runs like a Swiss watch, dead silent at speed (as a Rolls should be) and is in perfect condition at 82 years old.
goes to auto zone to get part:
year? 1928
umm.....we don't go back that far sir.

Great story AND nice car, BUT I would not want to be on the same road as a 102 ager driving that land yacht.

I don't know....driving a '28 Rolls is like driving a truck without power anything. Non synchro transmission, manual steering, mechanical brakes. You have to be in really good shape to wheel that rig down the road. If the old guy could see and hear alright, probably not much of an issue. And he was certainly used to the car!

Rolls built cars in Springfield from 1920 until 1931. The car was likely a "local" as well.

You probably don't live in the Northeast. The entire state is like 300 miles end to end... think a bit about what roads might have been like in the depression, and question whether the guy would ever have reason to travel far and wide at that time, or as he aged; since that time.

Great story! That shithole state is 190 miles West to East, and 50 miles North to South, not counting Cape Cod. I was born and raised in ASSachusetts and I got the **** out of there at 19.

Me too, born and raised. Been out since 1989 but my parents are still alive so I visit once a year... it wasn't so bad, but I fell in love and moved South.

He could definitely walk or ride a horse to whatever place he needed to go since communities in the area were quite self contained. He probably worked only a mile or 2 away from home, and since farming was so prevalent in the Connecticut valley at the time, and textiles were also a local product there was likely no reason for him ever to leave town to get anything needed.

I followed a Massachusetts girl when she migrated.
