I'm old enough to remember when country and western folks vilified those "long-haired, hippy freaks" - now many of those same fans/stars are the most unkempt cave-men looking types around.

Charlie Daniels was probably the 1st "hippie/rebel country singer". Although Charlie was actually very conservative later on. Like a lot of us, he grew up politically.

Yeah - not a C&W fan much, but there were some standout, non-conformists - I heard Charlie Pride a few times and then saw a picture of him.....WTF ? Not your typical Okie from Muskogee.

A bigger record seller than Elvis one year.
