Is there even any lane time or locations for the shoe rental schmucks like me in 2023?

Take the kids as a family outing couple times a year. Why?

Just asking, bowling appears to be a vanishing sport.
It’s been a few years. I like it.

You are probably correct. When we were young there were many bowling alleys in town. We also had “duck pins” bowling, the pins are a smaller and the ball is a little larger than a softball without finger holes.

Not since the last time about 40 years ago. Some idiot spilled their drink on the approach and my first toss found me laid out prone 4 foot off the floor. Everybody in the place must have heard my bones impacting the wood floor judging by the number of faces turned in my direction... Or maybe they just never heard a 15 pound ball land from 8 feet up in the air before? Don't know about that but experiencing it once exceeded my limitations.

Bowling was a great first date choice. :hurray:
My wife and I go occasionally. If bowling is dying, I can't tell by the number of people at the lanes, nor the time I have to wait to get a lane.

My parents were on leagues and had many trophies - great sport.....sit down for 1/2 hour drinking beer, get up and roll a ball 30', sit back down, drink beer, argue over score - keeping, wash, rinse repeat..
We still have one bowling alley in my area, but on its last legs.

Gotcha.
There are number of lanes here that have been open a long time. Thee pretty decent sized ones with a few miles of my house. They are busy all the time. There is a bowling team at the middle school and one at the high school.
I’m not sure it’s like when my parents drug me there and handed us kids some quarters to play pinball while they boozed and played leagues, but it still seems pretty lively here.

Datawiz drags me out once in a while to best me on the lanes.
Fun sport but like many others, requires regular practice to be any good. "Ain't nobody got time for that"
Between 4 kids (one in college) and running 2 businesses, it gets tight.

Bowling in my area, Albany NY used to be very popular. My fathers business sponsored teams for many years in the leagues. As a kid from about age 12 I used to bowl fill in. Got reasonably good, but have not been to a bowling place in over 50 years now!
Many of the places have closed down and in fact most have been bulldozed to the ground and another business is now there.

Wife and I went last night. We try and go 2-3 times a month. Highest game ever is 272. A few weeks back, I was able to bowl 227. Last night, my first 2 games sucked, I couldn't even break 100. 3rd game was only marginal...130.
Lane conditions really mess with me because my balls curve. My wife did well because her ball goes straight. When the lane is not oiled well, both of my two bowling balls have too much movement and I can't hit the front right of the headpin. When lane conditions are perfect for my skill set, I can bowl really well. When I have to move left and right from the starting position to try and accommodate the lane conditions, my game goes to crap.

Now you're talking. I used to watch the San Francisco Bay Bombers on TV when I was a youngster. The clubhouse where they trained was a mile away from where I lived in Alameda.

Not here. My son and I bowl in 2 leagues a week and just bowled in a tournament together.
.
When I was in high school, the local alley "Devon Lanes" had the blue pin bowling on Friday and Saturday nights. There was one blue pin per lane, and if it came up as the head pin, and you got a strike, you won a free game. Fun stuff!
I bowled on my high school JV team, and my fraternity team. Highest average was 181, highest game was 232. In other words, I was mediocre at it. :yesnod:

I bowled on a few leagues in my time. Now I limit myself to 100 pin bowling on my Wii video game.

Bowling would not be a thing if not for the beer and alcohol,,,
Cranker here. 16# ball, 30+mph, no consistency.
My kids want to go bowling at least once a month.
We have family "outings" twice a month for fun and at least once a month the vote always ends up being bowling.

30?!?!
On a good night I'm about 12.5 mph. I only throw harder if I need the ball to go straighter.

Well, every time a tornado takes out a trailer park, that pretty much displaces the local bowling team

Left handed and have a hell of a hook. I always hope for an oily lane and my first throw will let me know how shitty my night is going to be. Unsurprisingly, I'm a below average bowler. Still have fun though.
