View Full Version : 1957 Ford Thunderbird with "bird nest"...a very rare option
Did the 1957 Thunderbird have a rumble seat?
The 1957 model used the instrument panel from the full size
56 Ford with the engine dress up kit. This car is special for 2
reasons; the D-7 series features the 312 - 270 hp engine,
and is one of a few built with the rumble seat known as the
"Bird nest".
Today's Car of the Day isn't so much about the beautiful car showcased, but about the rare option. It's a 1957 Ford Thunderbird with the dealer installed "Bird's Nest" rumble seat.
The '80's band The Fabulous Thunderbirds used to feature a T Bird with the Bird's nest on the cover of one of their Albums, which I have somewhere.
Thanks for the post.
When I was a kid in the '60's my neighbors had a '56 and a '57 T-bird. Two brothers. Painted them with lacquer in the driveway while I watched. Came out perfect. The '56 was dark Hunter green and the '57 was lime green pearl....very nice. I always wanted an Early Bird. Until I drove a few and worked on them. Like our resident Citizen said, "Hard Pass".
Keep up the killer posts, Lakota. Watched The Checkered Flag from 1963 on Pizza Flix youtube last night and it had a bunch of brand new '62-'63 Ferraris and '61-'63 Corvettes racing. Grade Z movie, well worth watching. Thunder in Carolina also worth watching on the Pizza Flicks youtube channel.

It would suck to be isolated from the front seat by having the roof installed. With the top off, it would be a better experience.

I use to love painting my cars with lacquer. Even did a couple in the drive way. Lots of work sanding a buffing, but well worth the effort. :yesnod:

My friend Doug rattle can his 71 Chevy pickup with lacquer. Black and turned out great. LOTS of hand work but really nice paint.

This was the only car I ever "rattle canned" and it came out very nice. Very small car body though so it was pretty easy...:yesnod:

Doug did remove the doors, fenders and hood plus the bed. But old school lacquer cans ruled for affordable paint jobs.

Was never a fan of the Thunderbird. I always kind of thought of them as a college girls car or something.
As far as rattle canning, neighbor up the street rattle canned his 68 Land Cruiser...flat tan Krylon. It actually looks pretty good.

I had actually never heard of that "bird nest"....very cool. Yenko made a rear seat for the C2 Corvettes as an aftermarket half-joking addition. Very rare I've only seen one "real" version, but, a super good CF friend made one for himself and me as well - a great conversation piece.

Aftermarket. Like those big dry ice cylinder window air conditioners. When America was a free country, we had all sorts of inventions and inventors and it was a very open market with a lot of choices. Not like today, where you are simply all racists and homophobes. :)
Here's that Fabulous Thunderbirds album I was talking about:
