Sloth and Pride

I'm working on a theory during my now frequent road trips as to the motivation of left lane bandits: Sloth, Pride, or both?

Sloth. Set the cruise on 4-over and stay there. Don't have to worry about vehicles merging onto the highway. Ignore the tens of cars behind you, creeping closer over time. Works well for drivers of Laura-sized trucks, minivans, and commercial vehicles.

Pride. This is less common than Sloth. The Tell is when they speed up as you pass on the right.

I came across a complete idiot in Mike Mercury area... Columbus. 5 or 6 lanes and yes it was raining. Guy was in far left going 25mph.. Somebody came up behind him and spun out hit brakes so hard as nobody expected that bullshit.

Decades of riding motorcycles and riding on the street since 1976 taught me to 'drive ahead' by as far as I could see. So far, so good. I've been rear ended several times (when stopped at lights or signs) but have never ran into anybody in front of me. :)

Same here... I saw the guy way off but anyone not driving far ahead were in a world of hurt.

Not sure why you think a Sloth is slow. I have a friend who still has the scars of being attacked by a Sloth when he was feeding it at the zoo he worked at. He still goes on about how fast they can be if they want to.

IMO the motivation is probably the same as with smokers and heavy drinkers. They want to die without the responsibility of taking direct action.

Practically all of the freeway head-on crashes I've seen happen in the left lane. With a closing speed of approximately 140 mph every fraction of a second counts and these people willingly forfeit that benefit. Can't say I waste any tears on them and passing them in the safer lane has been no problem. Oh well :D

I've never ran into ANYTHING and I've been on the roads since 1979.
I drive defensively meaning I think everyone is going to hit me. I've never been in an accident and nobody has ever hit me either. Some have come close to hitting me but I pay attention to EVERYONE and have managed to avoid the idiots.

Left lane bandit types:

Clueless cruisers. Ended up there by chance and are just going to cluelessly, and without any thought, stay the course.

Pace car pricks. Think since they are going 3 mph over, they aren't in anyone's way and no one should be on their ass. They won't move over...and most likely won't let you pass either.

Phone phuks. Jacking with their phone with ZERO ability to multi-task. If they focus on the phone, their foot comes off the pedal.

International idiots. No clue how to drive in the US or what the left lane rules are...written or not.

Worker wanderers. Going from job site to job site and DGAF about anything else but getting there at least 30 minutes late. Box truck, lawn trailers, welding trucks, plumbing trucks, trucks with all four doors a different color, plastic over a missing window are a few examples.

Me. Always in a hurry, zero patience, flipping off all the drivers listed above. Wanting to be going 20 mph over, but trapped.:lol:
