Have any of you people ordered from either? Experience? Quality?
I bought a freezer, and Main butcher in our town sucks, and cant say where the meat came from or how it was raised.

I am not seeing rating either. I am sure its there, but I would expect it to be prime meat.

If you want to spend more than it's worth, omaha meats are a good waste of money.

We've gotten them as gifts and were extremely happy we didn't spend our money on that meat.

Not a huge fan of Omaha Steaks. I can get quality beyond theirs in my local supermarket, and they always have angus prime.

Snake River is Wagyu. Thing is, there are so many Wagyu choices online these days, you need to find one that has the right marbling for your taste.

We have local producers as well that are good. All grass/grass finished.

For a new freezer, I'd take a look at where my nearest Costco is, or go with an online supplier. Get full cuts and steak them out yourself. Buy a decent vacuum sealer and seal portions before placing in freezer. Same with ground beef.

Omaha Steaks…premium price for mediocre meat

Just went to Publix, and they had New York Strip for 16.99 a lb. It was called Premium Beef, USDA Choice. Contradiction right there.

I want to get into eating more Bison. Its so good when done med-rare etc.
But the cost.. Ouch..
Hard to nail down cost when some are strictly packages with other cuts.
We have a whole foods in Charleston, but they more costly than shipping in from out of state..
I will sign up for SRF and see what they have to offer..
I was also looking here as Daughter wants to work at a ranch in Texas, and saw their beef for sale.

if you want to do a road trip, I highly recommend Hillside Farm for bison/buffalo in Telford PA

Prices seem fair. Bison is the healthiest meat, better than chicken/pork etc.

Also look at Porter Road and Creekstone Farms. I order from all three places (SRF, not Omaha Steaks) on a fairly regular basis.

Have you noticed Omaha doesn't specifically call out their beef as prime?

If you're going to start a collection, get a Food Saver Vacuum Sealer. If I see good sales, I will purchase, remove from the original packaging and vacuum seal it to prevent freezer burn and put a date on it. Good for months.

Even for leftovers.

My wife cooks in bulk and I vacum what's left. We could probably eat nice meals for 2 months without cooking a thing. Just a reheat.

Dollar Tree has these small flat containers.

I use them for soups, casseroles, hamburger, beans and such. I will place the food in the container. Freeze it overnight and remove the next day for a vacum seal. Looks more appealing to eat later on than all squished up.

Last fall, a neighbor gave us a shitload of tomato's and she made marinara sauce. I put it in the containers, froze it over night and vacuumed into nice blocks the next day

They probably are the leader in mail order beef for gifts, especially around holidays, due to their advertising. They aren't the leader in high quality beef. Two different things.

Thanks for all the places to research. Most places are between 30 to 80 a steak, NY Strip for example.
Now, this is also from regular choice 12 ounce, 30, to a Dry aged 18 ounce.
So, you have to pick what you want carefully..
I have had dry aged, it was good. But it was a good steak house, so it was expected.
Wagyu is very good, and had allot in Japan and Australia. Its very good. It also comes down to how you cook it...
I personally use Wagyu rendered fat in a pan and cook it there, for flavor. Try to get 1 1/2 Steak to Med rare at 2 minutes a side or a little more, gently basting the rendered fat with garlic and maybe some thyme, for example on it.
So, I think if I can find choice or prime for mid 20s to mid 30s with free shipping I am good.

It's a FoodSaver Vacuum Sealing system with hand held sealer attachment. Bought it at Costco. Also buy FoodSaver bags there. We have had it for several years and have had no problems with it.:cert:

You need to get out more, talk to your neighbors, find out who the good local butcher is. Or your closest farm stand that has a meat freezer.

My neighbors are mostly Publix people. Our big butcher local just sucks, after he sold out and doesnt do his own cattle.
The 2 other butchers are very small and dont do their own cattle.
One , I will be going to when I get back delivers. Very unique. Grass fed, then he delivers to certain towns during the week your order, for you to pick up where he drops anchor with his truck..
I am looking, just not allot around people talk well about...

Don't screw around with those FoodSaver sealers. Get a real sealer, a chamber sealer.

I need to see price per lb, that is important and what grade it is, just so I can compare. But Costco had ribeye for 22.95 a lb. That is one item I saw.. So, more than publix, which I find odd. I figured costco would be cheaper.
Then NY strip for 19.99.
Last year it was far cheaper.

The inlaws are looking at buying a whole wagyu cow for processing.
Man, I hope they pull that off.

We had some ground beef from the guy that raises them and holy crap was that awesome.

I've had wagyu burgers a couple times at restaurants and wasn't really impressed.
The burgers at home were amazing.

Wagyu is very good.
Snake River and many other places vacuum seal everything and you can get allot of very good meat, and you know where it came from.

I usually get the rib eye, USDA choice. They currently have for $14.20 lb in 6 lb packages. Sometimes they have Prime.

Local Giant Eagle sells them for about $18.00/lb. Prime is about $21-22 a lb.

Local butcher doesn't label his as Prime or Choice and is selling them at $17.99/lb. Prior to covid they were $10.99/lb.

What percentage wagyu the beef if makes a huge difference, I believe.
I'm guessing the stuff I have had in restarurants (nice, but not crazy fancy) is probably the lowest that is allowed to be called wagyu.

The stuff the inlaws got was absolutely amazing, and I want more.
Local meat market had it on sale last month and I picked up a few pounds for like $6/lb. It was really good, not as good as the first we got.
Wife picked up a 1lb package at HyVee for $12/lb :ack:
and it wasn't as good as the local stuff.

we bought a 1/4 beef last year for $900...I'm afraid to hear how much wagyu would be.

IMO, mail-order steak joints are overpriced, and only serve as a novelty.
I have sampled most throughout the years, good, not great, definitely not value.

I am good with Costco, Publix--when on sale, Doris' Italian Market--when on sale and Broward Meats--always a sale.
All of the above are not great, but have value, I think a large component is in the cook, a good cook with good preparation can raise the meat a few notches.

Cooking a steak should be a standard all men should know.
But it is nice to know what you are eating. Brazilians are taking over the industry. There meat prior to entrrimg USA is not well monitored. And one dna test found 90 different breeds in one test of ground beef. Sick

In the past few years, I have become a fan of pan-cooked steaks.
When done right, with a cast iron skillet, it is as good as grilling, on charcoal or propane.

Did a couple filets a few weeks back, much better meal that I could ever get at an Outback, or Roadhouse Grill, for less than half the price, with no driving, and no waiting for a seat.

Reverse pan sear . Heat in oven, then sear in pan. Use Wagyu rendered fat or duck, thyme/garlic. 2.5 min each side. Then baste with juice in pan while cooking
Of course, season with salt n pepper prior to cooking
