Update on my neighbor building his own seawall. He got the backhoe tractor stuck again...:yesnod: but....this time only the shovel end. He was able to hook a large tow strap to his pickup and managed to pull it free before it sunk this time...:hurray:
He is almost finished, and I must say, he ended up doing a pretty good job of it so far. I still think he would have been better off hiring a company to deal with it, but now he has the satisfaction of being able to say he did it himself.:seasix:
I took these last two pics at high tide. Looks to me he should have gone a little higher with the wall. I think if we have any kind of storm surge it's going to go over it and cause a wash out. We'll see....:D

Midget basketball could be entertaining. :seasix:
Surely appears it should have been higher. And it also does not look level.
Rookie work.
(yes I'm qualified to call out a rookie, I've built seawalls in both wood and sheet pile. I've also built many docks and even a few small bridges :yesnod: )

I don't comment on them much, but I like Zeeks pix.
They tell a story.
Be it right or wrong, they're entertaining.
The banter, no so much.
I'll go back to yelling at clouds now...

I've noticed that. Never seen a positive outlook ever in any of his posts. Must be a damn shame to live life on the negative side all the time. :sadangel:

Not very nice - but I agree with the braggadocio - gets old.
I live on a 7 mile long 2400 acre lake and two days ago we had sustained winds of 27 mph with 33 mph gusts coming from dead South (the longest "fetch" possible on this lake) and we had 2-1/2 to 3 foot "rollers" for hours....that seawall is too low....and those are hardly the worst winds we've had across that expanse.. Think hurricane - here is a fairly mild storm from around Thanksgiving last year:

Nothing from that member is ever nice. And my post was not braggadocio. It was a disclaimer (notice the parentheses), otherwise some may say, "what gives you the right to call Zeek's neighbor a rookie?"
If members here did not share their experience, expertise, and events...it would be a boring forum.
I believe more should share their experiences and accomplishments with the group, the best ones have pictures. I look forward to Zeeks posts...and Data, and Giraffe, and DAB, and Rickles, and Lokata, and Yadkin, and Norm, and Mike Mercury...and even UD.
Some of it is informative. Some of it is entertaining. All of it is why I log in.
(disclaimer: not directed at you Mr. Frankie, I like your posts)
(disclaimer #2: sad that we need to have disclaimers :Jeff '79:)

At any rate, the pier in the pictures looks like mine before the stain treatment; is it me or is the quality of pressure treated lumber anymore just total crap ?
I put up a 100' privacy fence at my old home in Virginia in 1987 and its still there and arrow straight using "salt-treated" lumber; the decking on my 17 year old pier in Florida needs 5-10 boards replaced every summer over the last 5 or 6 years, not holding up well whatsoever. And last year I had to "scab" several joists. Ugh.
Heavy stain helps some but the dang thing has been a constant source of maintenance:

The wood is total crap.
Had a load delivered by Lowe’s last summer. Next day had to take back a bunch due to a lot of boards and even 4x4’s warped overnight. Even 2x2”s which were $2.62. For $.69 I’d throw away, not at over $2.50

They have changed chemicals in pressure treated wood a couple of times, the new stuff doesn't last at all. I have some 25 plus year old refuses to rot.

Common treated available from most yards is junk. You can get the good stuff (.80 or 1.25) from some suppliers.
The rough sawn marine grade is excellent. Good stuff that will make you sick if you breathe in too much of the saw dust. :Jeff '79:

Those who have the budget are going with Ipe or Cumaru. But without maintenance (oil) even those hardwoods are showing signs of aging here in Florida.
We built a dock for a gentleman who was insistent on using cypress decking. I visited his dock last week and after about 5 years the deck boards are toast. :willy:

Maybe off topic a bit, but have y'all seen the reality show where people out in the swamps locate and recover long submerged logs, that are apparently very pricey and desirable? What is the allure of that wood? What's it used for? Would those be suitable for bulkhead duty, since they apparently were able to exist underwater for so long?

Wood can last under deep water because of lack of oxygen. That's not the same environment as at the waterline.
Sunken logs are prized because they are old growth. The trees grew slowly thus the wood has a tight grain. Unlike "new" wood from plantations that grow very fast and thus have large growth rings.

That chit is prised. :yesnod:
There is a good amount of it here. Cypress and Pine. We call it "dead head".
Back in the day there were sawmills that floated logs down the Choctawhatchee River, many are on the bottom 100 years later. I actually know a guy who used to dive for them.
I built a home for a man a few years back and we had dead head "sinker pine" milled into T&G flooring in random width and lengths. It turned out beautiful. We never applied a finish on it an I actually saw it last week and it has held up beautifully.

An old family friend fished Cypress logs out of a river and had a cabin built in the hills of North Carolina, with all the cabinetry being that old Cypress.

Zeek Rocks. He's living a better life than a lot of folks. Picking on a guy for being under 6 feet tall is unconscionable. Height takes ZERO talent. It's genetic. Your life is what you make of it, and Zeke is living his best life. Screw you naysayers.

Solid as a rock. Hard on saw blades, like Ipe and Cumaru. The sawdust actually sinks in the water. :Jeff '79:

:I reach my limit after…… Ya know, that sounds like the start of a great thread:
I’ll start
I didnt get a pic, but todays high tide brought the water line to within 6-10 inches from the top of the sea wall. First good storm with a good surge and he's gonna loose that wall. Too bad....he sure put a lot of time an money into it...:yesnod:

Some 50 years ago, my folks had a bay side row house at Ocean City Md. and it shared a dock between every other house so 1/2 the amount of docks as houses......and the seawall was some 4-5' high off the normal water, and very often we go out to the house and find the back 'yard' had washed out, but we lucky in that the houses were with VERY deep foundations, so to back fill the silly seawall, PITA, must have done it at least 4x in the years they owned the place......only once on replacing some boards in the seawall though, the wall was made of phone poles stuck in the mud.....and really heavy cross pieces with 2x6 pickets back 1/2 century ago, they meant BUSINESS then.....
Ok, so, it would seem my neighbor does know his limitations. Apparently he is limitless...:yesnod: After the two stuck backhoe incidents, he really got his groove on. He is almost done and it looks really good. I told him to day when I took these pics what a great job he was doing. :cert:
But I still think he shoulda gone higher with the seawall....:yesnod:
Looks like an A for effort.
