A few weeks ago, my neighbor texted me at 6:30am (ugh), wanted to know if i knew anything about plumbing. yes. spent the morning getting parts and fixing a leak. He asked how much, i sent him a pic of the parts receipts, told him we were square. Some days later, he comes over with a check for the amount of parts I had to get, and some baked goods his wife made.

yum.

A few weeks after that, as I'm coming home from church sunday morning, i see a car pulled over on the opposite side of the road near my turn off with a flat tire. Pull around, put her spare on for her, and stash the flat (had a nail thru the side wall, not fixable by me, but i did have the plug kit with me) in her car, and she returned home. gave her my name and addy and phone #, wished her well. today, she calls and tells me that there is a tin of cookies waiting for me at the main turn off, so i drive up there in the snow and fetch them. sesame seed, honey, whole wheat things.

yum.

And today, I got a load of water for my neighbor, as I park the truck and trailer to off load, she comes out with a wrapped up pastry, kind of like a strudel, for me. had some after lunch. very tasty, breakfast for the next few days.

yum.

so apparently word is getting around that I'll work for food.

yeah, join the "feed the fat guy club" :slap: :sneaks: :yum: :DAB:

Nice! Wish I was close enough to taste the strudel! I love that kind of stuff, but my diabetes doesn't.

or i'll just go buy ingredients and make something I like.

i can manage choc. chip cookies.

had the water treatment guys here last friday, sent them off with a bag of choc. chip cookies i had made the day before. the younger kid gets the bag, looks at the cookies (about 3" diameter, nice serious cookies), "oooh, these are big ones!". yup, i make what i'd eat. big ones.

Linda was the baker, she loved to bake all kinds of stuff, always trying something new and tasty. some turned out like the pictures, others were just tasty. i didn't care. perhaps something I can work on over time. have the kitchen space and all the fancy tools still.

In May & October, I get up on the double roof and either hook up or close down the cooler. I use to do the neighbor lady at the same time because she knew I was thorough. She would give me some Subway gift cards.

Now she has refrigerated air, so I don't get shit.

If you don’t expect anything from life (humility), then when you get something it’s always a joy.

I don’t change tires because I want cookies, I do it because it needs doing.

Go and do likewise.

My next door neighbor had a few by-passes and a battery assist added to his heart this past summer.
Because their married kids are too busy with life, his
grass went uncut for a few weeks. So one day, I went over and cut it.
Did this for the next 5 weeks (8 times total), until the guy was
able to ride his mower again.
They gave me a gift card to the local Metro-Mart (subsidary of Kroger)
as a thank-you gift. They had offered money in the beginning, but
I refused it. I have done similar for my neighbors in the past.
I never asked for anything in return. I saw the need, and just did it.

About 3 weeks after Marianne passed, The lady came over to say
they had just found about about her passing.
She gave me 2 dozen chocolate chip cookies.
Very big cookies.
They were good.

I've helped neighbors several times. Normally they reciprocated with their help or beer.

I Know Doug is just a good person and helps people because he likes to.

We should all aspire to that.

My favorite verse

Nehemiah 8:10 CSB

Then he said to them, “Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send portions to those who have nothing prepared, since today is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, because the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

My favorite verse

the two prior verses give some context:

8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.
9 ¶ And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.

the people heard the Word of God, had it explained to them (expository preaching), and had great sorrow when that happened, because they knew that they had not kept the law and had sinned.

when's the last time you were sad after hearing a sermon?

Luke 18:

18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.

My wife is a crazy-good cook and I have a lot of sh!t that needs done and the house next door is for sale.....think about it; I'm just sayin'

My neighbor's wife across the street is about 5'2" 120 lbs and drives a Honda Shadow that won't start. She let it sit too long and I got it running but the carbs are all varnished up. So she asked if I would tow it to her mechanic. Turns out that was a 25 mile trip. Next day a nice thank you card in the mailbox with a gift certificate for $100 to our favorite Mom & Pop Italian place.

Yesterday she knocks on the door and says her 300,000 mile Toyota SUV is broke down at the entrance to the subdivision, we drive up there and both alternator and battery are dead - I "tow strap" it home so AAA can come carry it to the mechanic today. I quit changing parts for friends and neighbors, too old, too lazy.

Last summer I put LED overhead lights in her garage - the wife is starting to ask questions.

:slap: This thread was supposed to be about helping neighbors for food, not your sexual exploits with said neighbor. We're glad you were thorough, but doing her for Subway cards is still prostitution!

Allow me to add one of my favorites, I say it daily, it keeps me humble, also mindful that we should help all others when able and possible, reminds me that our service to others is not in vain, as you honor Our Heavenly Father when you help his children, good deeds will always be rewarded, often not immediately, and many times those you love will be the recipient, not you:

1 Samuel 2:30

Now the LORD declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor

The entire verse:

“Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.’ But now the LORD declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.

we are not saved by doing good works, good works are evidence that our hearts have been changed as a result of being saved.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

2 Tim 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Titus 2:7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,

Titus 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

and finally:

Ephesians 2:8-9 -
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
