View Full Version : To flask, or not to flask

At month's end I am attending a dood's, he may be family, wedding.

I heard open bar will be brief, as some on the list cannot control their intake.
Also heard the bar will remain open, but payment-in-full required at time of service--very swanky hotel on ocean, they may charge like $5/beer and $6/booze, and may want a tip.

So, I can load up while free, but that is not my style, I like to pace myself.
I think the best plan is to drink at a pace until the free spout stops, then break out the flask, of which I have yet to purchase.

Then again, if I break out a flask, how did I keep the other cheap bastards from asking for a hit.

Please advise, and / or give tales of your consumptions at weddings.

Lastly, what is the preferred flask for wedding, as those pyrex ones take a lot of space.

On such occasions if I was spending the night at said hotel, I had a bottle and set ups in my room and would go there, make a drink, and stroll back. It also allows you to drink more without any concern for driving.

Keep a pint under the seat in your car. Once the open bar stops, order soda or whatever non-alcoholic refreshment you wish and take it outside to "doctor" it. Keep a one-hitter filled with purple sticky bud next to the flask. You'll find the evening much more bearable.

My b-i-l will have his yacht in the marina at the hotel, my sister has ordered a catered service, they have a booze cabinet in the salon.

Problem with going down there is I probably would not return to the reception, as the boat is much more fun than a roomful of stiffies.
I considered a room, but there are probably $1,000/night, and I may leave early to get home to our dogs, my house is about 20 minutes away for me, 40 minutes for everyone else.

I am thinking a couple or three drinks when free, a flask hidden from the moochers, one trip to the boat, and then off to see the doggies.

Only problem with above is the wifey has stated I better not bail early,,, she likes to be one of the last to leave.

Don't use a flask, use a 20 oz. soda bottle. The cheap bastards will think you're drinking Coke.

Or, better still, don't go to a wedding where you have to get druink to enjoy yourself.

In that case, inform your wife that she will be the designated driver that evening and that, if she needs you, you will most likely be on the boat enjoying yourself.

Thanks, the soda bottle may work, but been a long, long time since I did Jack and coke.

I have to go, cannot predict the level of fun to be had, so I need to have an outlet.

I have a better plan. Skip the wedding and go to a bar of your choosing.

But for flasks, I have the perfect solution as this worked for me when I had to wear my Dress Blue Uniform in the Army.

You want something flat with a slight curve so you can keep it on the inside pocket of your suit coat if you wear one. If not, you can easily tuck it in under your belt like a CCW weapon.

Anybody who asks for a hit off the flask or reaches for it gets a broken hand at a minimum.

Put your single malt into the bottle and add a little food coloring to darken it. Voila! Looks like Coke without any actual Coke.

Get hammered off of various hidden airline-sized bottles well before the event and tell your date/wife/spouse to take an uber. :)

How about this plan, scotch does not need ice, or to be cold, maybe a few droplets of water to open it up, SO, I just go to the free bar and order 12 glasses,,, I hope it ain't JW Red?!?!?

Hopefully they have a The Balvenie 12-year, or any Ardbeg.

Just sneeze into the flask and state loudly you no longer have a sense of smell since you caught COVID - guarantee nobody will want a hit...

I don't drink much, but I was young once. First, while you're still in your car, discreetly do a few shots that you know will get you to your desired state of hammeredness (tm). So you'll walk in completely sober, be able to exchange pleasantries, and then begin your buzz. If you, in fact, need to keep drinking during the event to maintain, then yes, why not carry a flask? Order a soft drink at the bar, then discreetly pour out whatever it is and pour in your libation of choice over the ice. This is why God invented indoor plants.

If you're a simple rum and Coke kind of guy, you don't even really have to pour anything out, just add and swirl.

Finally, have designated driver, and realize that if you get stopped, you still have an open container, so you don't want to give an officer any reason to search you.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

I would say that using a flask is pretty low-brow. I've been drinking heavily since 1967 and have never resorted to using a flask. https://i.imgur.com/QqlHfuc.gif

Having said that, $6 for a mixed drink? That's not bad at all. From your description of the place I'm betting they'll be a lot more than $6, like maybe double or more.

I've not been to a wedding in over 20 years, despite having several of them in my family since then. The extravagance is a turn-off, especially considering so many couples break up in a few years anyway. The last two I went to (non-family) I never got so much as a thank you for the gift, and not even any acknowledgement that they even got it.

And nobody will likely remember if you were there or not. My great-niece got married about 10 years ago, and her dad said to me last Christmas something like: "Hey, do you remember Brittany's wedding where . . . " I reminded him that I wasn't even there. The marriage has been kaput for several years now.

This is the resort in question, I amy show up early and sneak in a quick nine holes.

Just learned valet is $30, wait until I pull up in the C7Z, they will all run for cover; maybe I will arrive in my CTS-V, even louder than the Vette, they are going to love me, or toss my arse to the curb:

All I can think of is Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the scene where the valet tweakers are airborne in the priceless vintage Ferrari.

I remember about 30 years ago when I dropped my '65 GTO off to an upholstery shop for a new headliner. When I picked up the car the next day, the shop owner and main guy handed me the keys and said "Man that thing is fast!" I guess headliners need to be test driven like anything else. Now, back to the topic or perhaps Doug. :seasix:

I do the same, as mine is also a 7M.
I would only pay for valet if I get to park it upfront myself.
With that said, this is boca raton, on the intracoastal, they will probably have at least 20 euroshits all worth $300+K upfront, they will tell me to park it myself.

During the reception, I will ask the waiter if he has any popsicles in the freezer, that was a great line from The Cowboy Way.

I hope they serve some good horsey derves.

Wife will definitely be sending me home early,,,

$1000/night for a room?

Your chance of seeing a $5 beer are 0.0:rofl:

More like $9 domestics and $11 imports. Mixed drinks start at $12. Cheap wine is $12, and semidecent wine is $16.

FFS, just use the boat.

Last event I went to at the Ritz Carlton here on the island
Domestic Beer. $8.00
Import Beer. $10.00
Cheap wine. $12~$16
Cheap liquor/cocktail $16-$20
No premium wines or liquor available

Drinking from an open bottle of liquor in your car? What could go wrong?

Most people are aware that you can be arrested and charged with a crime if you drive drunk. But did you know that you could actually face penalties just for having an open container of alcohol in your car–even if you are not above the legal limit? That’s the case because of open container laws.

Open container laws prohibit drivers–and sometimes passengers–to have any type of open container containing alcoholic beverages inside of vehicles. While there are some differences in open container laws by state, the general rule is that having beer, wine, or other alcohol in the passenger area of a vehicle can have legal consequences.

This guide will explain how open container laws work, as well as exceptions to these rules.
What are Open Container Laws?

Open container laws prohibit the possession of open containers of alcohol within a vehicle. Typically, these laws apply to areas of the car that are readily accessible to vehicle occupants.

Open containers in the trunk, for example, would not run afoul of the rules — nor would an open container in the rear of an SUV that doesn’t have a separate trunk.

https://www.forbes.com/advisor/legal/dui/open-container-law/

Being discreet is the key here, but OP could transport a bottle in the trunk, retrieve it, have a few drinks surreptitiously, then replace the bottle in the trunk and toss the disposable cup in the trash on the way in. If he hid the key somewhere away from the car before he did this, then even if caught drinking in the car, he couldn't be charged with a DWI because he wasn't technically in control of the vehicle. Where are the keys? Not in the car! I think an open container ticket would be easy to beat, too, since he's in a private parking lot, and again, no key, so he's not in control of a vehicle. Assuming everything goes well, he retrieves the keys on his way in to the event.

Spending a lot of money at a bar was never something I worried about.

I remember getting 10˘ drafts, ha. Drinking age was 18, we wouldn't think of going anywhere without beer on the way, and a cooler full in the summertime.

No need to uber home, I can crash on the b-i-l's 75-foot tri-level, it has 4 state rooms, and the third deck has an open back beyond the pilot house with more than enough space to sleep on a chaise lounger.

Texas makes some fine bourbons, of course if it is made in Texas some would prefer you call it whiskey.

I visited, and partook, Still Austin, very nice set-up with a nice bar area for sampling.
I was impressed local ranches came by a few times each week to get the mash for their herds.

From my "studies" during the 1970s, I believe by law anything labeled "Bourbon" must be made from at least 51% corn.
