The United States government is monitoring a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that has been moving over northern states over the past several days.
Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said during a briefing on Thursday afternoon that the U.S. government has detected a high altitude surveillance ballon over the continental United States.
"The United States government has detected and is tracking a high-altitude surveillance balloon that is over the continental United States right now. The U.S. government to include Norad, continues to track and monitor*it closely. The balloon is currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground. Instances of this kind of balloon activity have been observed previously over the past several years. Once the balloon was detected, the US government acted immediately to protect against the collection of sensitive information," Ryder said.

Having dealt with airborne/spaceborne intelligence gathering (a very special TS clearance category) I don't think this is a spy device, it would be a very ineffective means of gathering information, drifting randomly around overhead.....and the Chinese know quite well that NORAD tracks space objects in "inches and ounces", literally, including all the space junk that astronauts have left orbiting around.
However, if it had sophisticated imaging technology sufficient to detect classified documents in unsecured garages that would be a consideration.

“The airship is from China,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement Friday morning. “It is a civilian airship used for research, mainly meteorological, purposes. Affected by the Westerlies and with limited self-steering capability, the airship deviated far from its planned course.
“The Chinese side regrets the unintended entry of the airship into U.S. airspace due to force majeure. The Chinese side will continue communicating with the U.S. side and properly handle this unexpected situation caused by force majeure.”

At a cost of a million dollars each for a cruise missile, you'd think we could develop a high altitude balloon of our own, equipped with navigational thrusters, and some kind of grappling hook, net, or something to affix the Chinese spy balloon and bring it down in a controlled landing so we can see what's in it.
But hey, we do have pronoun training and paid sex changes for the military, so there's that. Money well spent as far as I'm concerned.

How high can civilian aircraft actually fly? High enough to level up with the balloon? Even if that's possible, it seems like an endeavor fraught with peril. The balloon would easily take out an engine, either prop, or jet if the approach was even a bit off.

We can easily see the equipment deck on these balloons, so we already know whether there are cameras, and their apertures. We for sure have monitored any rf transmissions, so we likely know whether they are engaged in active sensing, or SAR. Independent of what the Chinese say, we already have a pretty good idea about the mission.
As far as taking it out, 60,000 ft is a piece of cake. On the other hand, f-ing around with it could provide good TT&P information. Love to see us point a ground based laser at the deck and heat some stuff up. Would they maneuver? Are we monitoring the rf going from the balloon to the satellite relay? Which satellite are they using? What is the frequency band? Is it encrypted? If not, we can get the crosslink and see exactly what they're doing.
As far as balloons, we assessed many constellations that were balloon based. The reason is that balloons have incredible loitering capability, unlike LEO satellites. You just move them up and down and catch the best air stream to stay relatively in the same area. The altitudes make remote sensing possible with much smaller apertures than in space.
Just shooting it down would be the Neanderthal move right now. Once we get all of the info on it, we can make a decision on how the asset is best used from an international standpoint.
Our borders are not protected from illegal aliens, why should we expect our airspace to be protected?
The government is the issue, not the foreign nations sending people or things here. They know our government is too chicken shit to do anything

There's only one reason such a low tech approach makes any sense considering they have satellite capability. That reason being it's a delivery vehicle. Most likely a bioweapon. Remember how they bitched up a storm over virus testing of outgoing flights?
Shooting it down could be bad news, allowing it to reach it's intended target probably worse. I highly doubt brandon wanted this shot down and was overruled by generals. The opposite scenario seems far more logical. This excuse that the wreckage might cause damage by landing on something is absurd. Vaporize the MF'r :yesnod:

Chinese spy balloon changes course, floating over central United States-Pentagon
By Phil Stewart
and Idrees Ali
WASHINGTON, Feb 3 (Reuters) - A Chinese spy balloon has changed course and is now floating eastward at about 60,000 feet (18,300 meters) over the central United States, demonstrating a capability to maneuver, the U.S. military said on Friday, in the latest twist to a spying saga that led U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to postpone a visit to China.
The disclosure about the spy balloon's maneuverability directly challenges China's assertion that the balloon was merely a civilian airship that had strayed into U.S. territory after being blown off course.
"We know this is a Chinese (surveillance) balloon and that it has the ability to maneuver," Air Force Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told a news briefing at the Pentagon, declining to say precisely how it was powered or who in China was controlling its flight path.
article-prompt-devices
Register for free to Reuters and know the full story
U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday decided against shooting down the balloon as it floated over Montana due to U.S. military concerns about the likely dispersal of debris, American officials say.
The Pentagon expects the balloon to continue traveling over U.S. airspace for a few more days, Ryder said, declining to speculate on what options the U.S. military might develop in that time as speculation swirled about whether Biden could still order the balloon be destroyed or perhaps captured.
Ryder said the U.S. military would not specify where precisely the balloon was positioned over the central United States, saying he didn't want to get into an "hour-by-hour" cycle of updates. He said people in any given U.S. state could look up into the sky if they wanted.
"The public certainly has the ability to look up in the sky and see where the balloon is," Ryder said.
Senator Roger Marshall from Kansas said the spy balloon was over the northeastern part of his state and his staff was is in contact with law enforcement officials.
"I condemn any attempts the Chinese make to spy on Americans. President Biden must protect the sovereignty of the U.S.," Marshall posted on Twitter.
Ryder added the balloon posed no risk to people on the ground.
He spoke amid growing political fallout over the Chinese balloon's presence over the United States.
Postponement of Blinken's trip, which had been arranged in November by Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, is a blow to those on both sides who saw it as an overdue opportunity to stabilize an increasingly fractious relationship. The last visit by a U.S. secretary of state was in 2017.
Biden ignored questions about the balloon when giving remarks on the economy Friday morning.
Chinese spy satellites carry similar sensors to what U.S. officials believe is on the spy balloon, raising questions about why Beijing would risk such a brazen act on the eve of a major diplomatic event.
Still, the Chinese spy balloon has taken a flight path that would carry it over a number of sensitive sites, officials say. One such site could be military bases, including in Montana, which is home to intercontinental ballistic missile silos.
The Billings, Montana, airport on Wednesday issued a ground stop as the military mobilized assets including F-22 fighter jets in case Biden ordered that the balloon be shot down.

Don't we have some sort of high altitude aircraft that could laser a hole (or holes) into this balloon & cause a slow descent & harmless landing? Except then China, and everyone else, would know that we have some sort of high altitude aircraft that could laser a hole (or holes) into this balloon & cause a slow descent & harmless landing.
I'd expect that our military, CIA, NSA, etc., could learn something from retrieving this thing undamaged.

Where is the Chinese spy balloon now? Airship spotted flying over North Carolina
Published February 4, 2023 11:09am EST
The balloon now sits above Charlotte, North Carolina
By Kyle Morris | Fox News
The suspected Chinese spy balloon, which has slowly transitioned across the United States over the last two days, now sits above North Carolina.
Footage captured by Fox News Saturday morning showed the balloon sitting just above Charlotte, North Carolina, around 10:30 a.m. ET.
An image of the balloon hovering above Fairfield, North Carolina, was also shared by meteorology student Evan Fisher earlier Saturday morning.
Other social media users posted about seeing planes flying in formation shortly after the balloon passed overhead.
The updated location of the suspected surveillance device comes after Defense Department spokesman Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said Friday that the balloon, which China claims is a civilian reconnaissance airship that inadvertently drifted off course, had "changed its course" and moved to the central part of the country.
Photos shared Friday evening by the National Weather Service in Kansas City, Missouri, showed what appeared to be the balloon, which was first reported to be hovering over Montana, visible from its office in Pleasant Hill that appeared to be headed southeast. "We have confirmed that it is not an NWS weather balloon," NWS Kansas City said.
The Pentagon, amid steady pushback from Republican lawmakers who are keeping an eye on the situation, said that it considered taking down the possible threat from China, but ultimately decided against any action due to "the risk to safety and security of people on the ground from the possible debris field."
The balloon, which Ryder said Friday will "probably be over the United States for a few days," was reportedly flying about 60,000 feet above sea level — higher than civilian aircraft fly.
Senior State Department officials have called the incident "unacceptable," and Secretary of State Antony Blinken has indefinitely postponed a planned trip to China to meet President Xi Jinping in light of the circumstances.
Several governors — including Missouri GOP Gov. Mike Parson and Montana GOP Gov. Greg Gianforte — have expressed frustration over the Biden administrations' lack of communication as the balloon traversed American airspace.
"We have received zero communication from the Biden Administration regarding reports of the suspected Chinese spy balloon now flying over Missouri," Parson wrote in a tweet on Friday. "We have heard no explanation or plan to remove it. Why has this been allowed to reach our heartland? Why has it not been eliminated?"
Similarly, Gianforte, during a Saturday morning appearance on "Fox and Friends Weekend," blasted the Biden administration's communication about the balloon.
"We're informed through our national guard," Gianforte said. "We knew nothing about this until this slow moving balloon was hundreds of miles into the state. It had already flown over military installations and it was over our most populous city in the state."
A senior U.S. Defense official told Fox News the balloon was launched from mainland China. The Pentagon does not believe that this was a weather balloon that flew off course, as China initially claimed. There was no "force majeure" that caused the Chinese surveillance balloon to enter U.S. airspace, as China's foreign ministry spokesperson had said.
"This was intentional," the senior U.S. official said.

1) Flightradar of the area that shows a big "hole" in the airspace.
2) Special security NOTAM that popped up.
That NOTAM is clearly discriminatory against men. Note that only airMEN are being threatened with legal penalties, not any of the other 57 genders that make up the proud mosaic of people of air. I'm outraged! I guess Mayor Pete doesn't care, because, since he isn't a man, he won't be personally effected by this discriminatory policy.

Military advised waiting until it was off the coast, didn't feel it was safe to fire live air to air weapons over land nor have debris falling on our people. Besides, what do we think the balloon saw that their satellites have not already seen?

They saw it over Montana ( at least that's when the people saw it and it "broke cover" ). Except for a few cities, Montana is wide open. Our national security is worth more than a steer that it might fall on.

This is fascinating. I agree with those saying there is nothing a balloon can really do as far as spying. So what is the point? I suspect it was not shot down over the US on the possibility it contained anthrax or some shit. Seems that's the only real threat it could possibly pose. So the Chinese motivation is mysterious, which makes this episode fascinating. Maybe it's true purpose was the record US air defense reaction times, radar wavelength, etc.
It was interesting to me that the report is it was shot down by an AIM-9X from an F-22. I wouldn't have used an F-22 on the chance it was recording F-22 radar signature at various ranges, wavelengths, and angles. I would have used an F-15 or F-16. AIM-9X is interesting as well. The only heat signature would be the ballon surface heated by the sun. A huge, but not a very hot target. Seems like it would be a far easier target for an AMRAAM, but the AIM-9X obviously did the job. I just hope all the debris is recovered instead of sunk and lost.

Biden just proved he and Hunter have backdoor dealings with China. They make a big announcement that they popped the balloon over the Atlantic Ocean where it won’t fall on someone’s house, as if we are supposed to believe he did this to show us he cares about our security and safety.
Doesn’t he and his joke of an administration realize that most educated Americans and children know that the balloon doesn’t record data, it sends it, real time, to a satellite that relays it back to China. Rather than down it as soon as it entered US air space Biden let it fly across the entire US, with China guiding it along the way over our air bases, ICBM silos and other national security installations.
China has everything they wanted from this balloons flight across the US. I’m sure Biden and Jinping worked out a secret deal so Biden would let Jinping fly it across the US and Jinping would let Biden shoot it down. China gets their data and the Biden’s keep their personal financial dealing with China. :issues:

On the 10-minute drive to work, listing to Kilmeade on radio, he played a sound clip of a general, who I believe has oversight over NORAD.
This loser said they first detected while over Alaska, but per USA Military Policy, due to no hostile actions observed, nor a threat to our population, there was NO REASON TO ENGAGE.
The guest on the show, a military man, said in iraq and afghanistan, they routinely killed all enemies, regardless if 'hostility' was active, because they wanted to stop the trouble before it started.
For example, they engaged and killed many bomb and IED makers BEFORE USA Servicemen came under attack, he stated multiple kills were enemies digging holes in roads to plant lethal devices.
I think the norad POS is lying, time to bring him into The House, ask him to restate, point out military policy, and then court-martial him for dereliction of duty.
Lastly, many asses are protecting other asses!!
depends joe, as the story goes was told at least 24 hours after detection, this is another lie, take it to The House, and prove they lied, and the balloon could have easily have been taken down while in Alaska.
It is getting harder to determine if these effing incompetent losers are just effing stupid, or lazy, and know they can cover both with lying, as the msm sucks it hard like a $10 hoe.

Even in the 70's the Army Security Agency had an intelligence site at Shemya Alaska on an island - that stie is still active today and I had military pals stationed there (miserable duty), at any rate, that balloon was detected prob 1/2 way out in the Pacific, and, NORAD tracks things in inches and ounces so no surprise there either during the Canadian border crossing. Then the WH and media try to normalize this fiasco by stating the same thing happened under Trump, which the Director of National Intelligence and the head of NORAD at the time deny completely.
