View Full Version : NC ski resort closes cuz of cold
Beech Mountain Resort will be closed for skiing and snowboarding Friday, December 23, and Saturday, December 24.
The forecasted temperatures and high winds may create dangerous conditions on the slopes. We value the well-being of our customers, staff, and community members and plan to re-open on Sunday, December 25, at 1 p.m., with more favorable skiing conditions.

Cold, and some high winds,,, sounds like they do not want a slew of airlifts.

I would imagine high winds are problematic to safely operating lifts

And maybe don't want first responders risking their lives to rescue idiots from injuries, hypothermia, etc. It could be that - duh.

Doesn't seem to be a problem at Sugar Mountain, it's main lift 6 chair instead of 4, detachable high speed instead of fixed, and twice as long. Doppelmayr for the win. :yesnod:
My college buddies and I STILL bust on one of our friends for bagging out on a ski trip, citing the reasons that "it's cold, and there is a lot of snow". That was 1988. I'm sure that unless he is the last man standing, he'll be hearing that one for the duration. :yesnod:
When we were on the coast there were many times when it was too hot to go to the beach.

My big rhododendron (must be several hundred years old) is a reliable thermometer. It tightens up it's leaves as the temperature drops. :D

That was my take-away. :yesnod:

I left the stove burner on once and burnt up a teflon pan.
Replaced it with cast iron. Never again. :)

That’s called smart. I spent most of my life up north. No more ice or snow now. We fly up to CO a couple times every year for skiing, that fills our annual winter quota.

I call it "giving up". I'm glad 20 million or so did; less crowded here in God's Country. :seasix:

We seriously considered NC. Couldn’t afford on the beach there. No income tax tipped it in Florida’s favor.

I agree. Dad came out west from Indiana, Mom came out from Michigan. They hated the cold winters.
My SO came from NY for the same reason 45 years ago. She hated NY winters.
I like taking a day trip to the snow but that's it. The older I get, the more I like warmer weather. I no longer ski due to a damaged ankle. No reason to freeze and suffer.
There IS something about hunting in the snow, though. Very surreal and cool.
Different strokes.

My family is all beach peeps since the day I was born. Cape Ann, then Cape Cod, spent most of my childhood in the back of a station wagon, stuck in traffic. As soon as I got my license and the few times that I wasn't working, I went the exact opposite direction: mountains of NH and VT, sometimes Western MA. The only time I went to the beach myself was during the off season.
Most of my family is now in Ft. Myers and I'm still loving the mountains. :seasix:

I’d love to live in the mountains with a short walk to the beach. I haven’t found that place.

That’s not a beach. :slap:
As a guy about to turn 62, I consider it a luxury to be able to 'give up' on hardships I no longer have to endure. I have nothing left to prove, except on this forum. I'm retired. I can live where I want. The days of suffering and marching to the beat of others or trying to 'see how tough I am' are, thankfully, behind me.

Nova Scotia.
Gorgeous. But Canada.
Truthfully, Like Yaddie, I spent a childhood going to the beach. As an adult, did a lot of saltwater fishing. Lived in the SF Bay Area from 1961-2003. Now that I'm not near the beach, I don't miss it. My preference? The desert. More than the coast. More than the mountains. 73796

I grew up in Colorado hunting, skiing, hiking, backpacking and four wheeling. Lots of mountains. No beaches. Never went to a beach growing up. Still love mountains (real mountains, not hills) but we’re really enjoying the beach.

Check the nearest volcano with a lake in its caldera. :D
Grew up going to the beach regularly. Mostly the DelMarVa and some Jersey.
Always figured I'd land at the beach, maybe california. But it was florida. We loved the beach lifestyle for 30+ years here.
But now...you could not give it to me. We are done.

I lived in NH for 15 years, traveled almost the entire state, and not once did I see a mountain.
Since I grow up in the Canadian Rockies, yes, I know what mountains are. :yesnod:

Globull warming strikes again.
-12F now, still dropping. May be time for a midnight swim... :D
This beats the prior record (since I built this house) of -10F. When it got to -9 there were several "pops" as lumber shrinks. Now experiencing more. Like a submarine going deeper....

Water's probably still in the 50s... go for it. Won't be bad until you get out.

Seinfeld, Season 5, Episode 21
Was -14F at midnight and still there. TVA requesting it's retailers to do rolling 15 minute blackouts. When that happened to us we lost 2F inside the house.

Yup, "scientists" (living in liberal shitholes) are claiming it "might be" related in their local news sources. Nevermind that it's 30 degrees colder up there than what we're experiencing down here. The brainwashed youngsters spouting this garbage should be sent there to get some IRL experience on the matter :yesnod:

Due to the extremely cold temperatures, the power company is requiring Sugar Mountain Resort to remain closed for all sessions and all activities today, December 24. Stay warm and Merry Christmas. [emp mine]
Damn, all those heat pumps screwed the pooch for the resort today. :(
