Tesla recalls 435,000 vehicles over ‘defective’ feature that can increase crash risk

TESLA has issued a massive 435,000 vehicle recall over a software defect causing specific models’ position lights not to illuminate.

Side, rear, or front marker lights that fail to activate lower an electric car’s visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

Affected Teslas include 142,277 made-in-China Model 3s manufactured between December 27, 2020, and November 7, 2022, and 292,855 made-in-China Model Ys produced between January 1, 2021, and November 11, 2022.

SAMR’s recall report read: “For some vehicles within the scope of this recall, during the process of waking up from the parking state, the software of the vehicle’s position lights may have an error when initializing internal parameters, resulting in the position lights on one or both sides of the rear of the vehicle not being able to light up.”

Tesla will fix the potentially dangerous software defect through an over-the-air update, SAMR (State Administration for Market Regulation) reports.

Drivers can now use their Tesla mobile app to download the new software to their car from their phone once it’s available.

Elon Musk’s electric car company previously required customers to enter their car and apply software updates through their car’s touch display.

It marks the 20th recall of the year for the troubled car brand and is the second China recall that Tesla has issued recently.

Musk’s company recalled 80,000 Model S, Model X, and Model 3 vehicles last week over software and seat belt issues.

Only 16% of the 80,000 Teslas recalled last week in China will need a service center visit.

The other 84% of the 80,000 recalled vehicles can be fixed through an over-the-air update.

Tesla has issued 19 recalls in the U.S. so far during 2022, potentially affecting over 3.7million vehicles, U.S. Department of Transportation reports.

This should be a non-event. Just like, but much less invasive, than an OS update. My biggest question is why 16% of the vehicles need to visit a dealer. Are there Teslas that have opted out of OTA updates?

Since all of these are in China -

Maybe they are not in a location that can receive OTA signals or possibly government employee vehicles which I know do not allow OTA connectivity per government rules.

Hmmm. Most Tesla chargers require connectivity of some type. China just doesn't want Elon talking to their audience.

Tesla is new to this. They'll get the hang of it. I expect them to be on top faster than Joe Biden at a Girl Scout meeting.

The term "recall," though technically correct, sounds a lot worse than it is. In most cases it's just an OTA software update. I would much rather have 100 of Tesla's "recalls" than even one of a Legacy manufacturer's recalls where I have to bring my car to a Stealership so they can reprogram the flash (and probably **** something else up in the process).

I don't care - you want to drive an EV, fine. Don't bitch that I prefer an ICE vehicle. And quite trying to force me into one, I assume that sometime before I die I will have one, but it should be my choice. And **** you and your MMGW rhetoric.

Agree.
Except, not sure I will ever own one. Although an EV Polaris Ranger has its benefits.

The Musk worship is almost fanatical, the man that wants to put a chip in your head, offers to fist fight Putin over the Ukraine and takes polls to decide who and who should not be on Twitter (yeah some freedom of speech policy). Then he argues with the likes of daft AOC as if she had an actual brain.

He's a rich weirdo and emotionally about 14 and I catch holy hell most places for that opinion.

... China just doesn't want Elon talking to their audience.

That wouldn't be my guess based on a video I watched yesterday which claimed he recommended to Taiwan that they should rejoin the mainland. He was also reportedly granted tax free sales of his cars (in China) a few days after the remark.

Look at history and you will find most of the brilliant minds were those of weirdos and strange people.
Henry Ford
Nicholas Tesla
Thomas Edison
Albert Einstein

Most of these people were borderline crazy. It’s just how they are wired.

Elon Musk fits the mold.

Post a link to where anyone here has "bitched" that you prefer an ICE vehicle or tried to force you into buying an EV. We'll wait. :waiting:

:iagree: 100%

Genius and Eccentricity definitely go hand-in-hand. The smartest guy I have ever known personally refused to buy a refrigerator for his apartment because he ate all of his meals at Jack in the Box. He also threw all of his bills into the trash unopened, because paying bills was a waste of time. To keep the lights on he would send in a check maybe once per quarter with an amount he estimated would cover his costs for that quarter, expecting that every month each utility would deduct whatever he owed that month from his outstanding positive balance.

No - but that's a strange mix to glom toether Einsten, Newton (Hawkings is in that group) raw geniius and deep thinkers. Ford and Edison were just persistent and smart buisnessmen who could capitalize on an opportunity....e.g. Edison did NOT invent the light bulb.

Musk may turn out to be in that second group, but also should be included in a group with Johnny Depp and Kanye for his stupid online antics, narcissim and publicity addiction.
