Man on moped leads deputies on chase through 2 counties
DENVER, N.C. - Deputies arrested and charged a Denver man Saturday night after chasing him through eastern Lincoln County into Gaston County while he was riding a moped.
Dion Albert Torrence, 31, of the 2500 block of Crab Apple Trial in Denver gave one Lincoln County sheriff's deputy the runaround just before 11 p.m. when he tried to pull Torrence over in the 700 block of South NC 16 near Quarry Lane, the sheriff's office said.
The sheriff's office said that Torrence refused to pull over and continued driving south in Gaston County, where he turned onto Highway 73. He then turned onto Stanley Lucia Road and wrecked the moped near Macedonia Baptist Church.
The pursuing officer said at one point during the chase Torrecne sped more than 20 miles an hour over the speed limit.
After crashing the moped, Torrence ran from the scene, leading the deputy on a foot chase. He was caught near the church a short time later.
A cigarette pack containing white powder that appeared to be cocaine was recovered following the chase. While the deputy was chasing Torrence on foot, he saw Torrence remove something from his pocket and throw it into a bush where the cigarette pack was later found.
Torrence was taken to the Magistrate’s Office where he was charged with the following:
Felony Possession of Cocaine (2 counts)
Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance Schedule II (2 counts)
