"Father of the CD" Dies
Norio Ohga , the former Sony chairman known for his major role in the development of the compact disc, died Saturday at the age of 81, Sony announced.

A Sony employee for decades who ran the company from 1982 to 1995, also presided over the creation of Sony Music and paved the way for the establishment of Sony Pictures. He was a special advisor to the company until his death.

"His numerous and successful endeavors were well-known both inside and outside of Sony," Sony's current chairman and CEO, Howard Stringer, said in a statement. "Witnessing Ohga-san's leadership firsthand was truly an honor, and one I continued to enjoy and benefit from in countless ways in the years that followed."

Nook Becomes a Tablet
Barnes and Noble said Monday that its Nook Ereader will add several features and become known as the Nook Color Reader's Tablet. The change will take place through a firmware update.

The Nook will continue to cost $249.

"NOOK Color offers the best reading experience of any device, and now delivers the most popular tablet features such as engaging apps so customers can play, learn and explore, free, built-in email, an Android operating system update for enhanced Web browsing and more interactive content,” CEO William Lynch said in a statement.

“With our new NOOK Apps program, we’ve partnered with the world’s best publishers and developers to offer popular brands like Angry Birds, Epicurious, Uno, Lonely Planet, Dr. Seuss, Little Critter and many more quality and entertaining applications. These and other enhancements, plus new ways for adults and children to experience exciting content, make NOOK Color a great alternative to paying double the price – or more – for an expensive tablet."

The company has also launched a new advertising campaign, called "Read Forever," for the new Nook.

Windows Phone 7.5 revealed by Microsoft
At MIX11 in mid-April, Microsoft offered new details on the latest major update that will grace the Windows Phone brand. New tools will be released in May that will let developers take advantage of augmented reality, fast app switching and multitasking. We noted that Microsoft did not mention the term “Windows Phone 7” anywhere in its press release. That may be because Windows Phone 7 will become Windows Phone 7.5.

This term was revealed on the Microsoft Partner Network website. The 7.5 update is codenamed Mango, which seems to follow the Android trend of naming major software updates after food. Windows 7.5 is expected to be available sometime later this year.

It isn’t clear whether Microsoft will continue to label future devices as Windows Phone 7, or something different. I mention this because Windows Phone 7 was just revealed last year and hasn’t quite taken hold in the market yet. As far as brand recognition goes, having two devices on store shelves labeled as Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 7.5 can be confusing to customers. Explaining the update process can only add to the confusion. Achim Berg, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone Marketing, told WinRumors this update will coincide with the release of a new platform.

One Third of Mobile Phones Now Have Touchscreens
The world market for touch panel devices will reach $10.42 billion this year, with touchscreens appearing on a third of mobile phones sold this year, according to a report issued Monday by DisplayBank.

The firm also sees the touch panel percentage for phones increasing to the 50 percent range by 2014.

The findings are from DisplayBank's 2011 Touch Panel Market and Issue Analysis.
