Village owned service was sold to a private firm out of Floriduh. Since then our bills have basically tripled.

Base charge of $65, then $0.0234 per gallon. Typical one-month water bill is $200. :needcoffee:

Whatever it takes in electricity to run da pump.. So 10 bucks.

Friend pays 75 a month, lives by himself and uses very little water. It's gone up 50% in the last few years as everything else has.

About $40/month near Orlando - I irrigate out of the lake so I save a couple of hundred monthly. They want to run city sewer in subdividion (I'm on septic) and I've been through that drill a few times.....a penalty if you don't immediately sign up and wait instead. Then the montly sewage bill starts climbing and climbing. Current septic is about $250 every 3 years for cleanout.

They annexed the last place I lived so I moved. Sewer started out at 3k for each property, not bad considering age of house and cost of new septic. It quickly doubled and tripled. These weren't baller houses.
The city owned utility said homeowners pay 100% of we don't put it in the bastards, they make millions in profits every year(ten of millions more likely). That was almost 20 years ago and thwy still haven't put sewers in everywhere, cost is capped(or was) at 7500 IIRC.
Here's ths kicker... If your septic went out and were slated for sewers they condemned your property so nobody could live there nor could you have new septic put in. Mind you it was 10 years plus for people. I knew a guy who had a rental in that area and septic needed replaced. He paid on house for almost 3 more years then let bank have it. Lost his ass.

Ours is ridiculously high here in Mayberry, $150+ monthly for about 7,000 gallons.

New place we are building in the country will be 1/3rd of that. We were going to do a well but surprisingly water is available from a nearby small town and is very reasonable. Even with the tap fee and line extension costs (sharing that with neighbor) it’s a pretty good deal.

1 cent per gallon when I haul it, and when you add the cost of the gas into that, it’s about 2.5 cents per gallon.

But the rain water I catch is free. Using that presently, drawing the tanks down a bit, that should continue thru the end of the month.

Our water averages $120-130 per qtr, so about $500/yr.

We have a septic system, which I always worry about, as it’s 35 years old. I hear replacement costs around here of $35-40K.

Most houses in the surrounding area are on the municipal sewer system, which puzzles me. I’m guessing that the sewers were run after our house & that of a nearby neighbor were built with septic systems. If (when) ours starts to have problems I plan to pursue getting connected to the town system.

Years back I lived in a house in a big suburb outside of Albany NY that also had a private well. We normally used the towns metered water supply for most things.. All was well for years and then a drought hit. The town passed all sorts of restrictions on water use. Basically no lawn watering except for a couple hours every other day, people were given different times so not everyone was on at the same time. All sorts of swimming pool restrictions, hardly any legal car washing. They had watchers out and some people got fines and their name in the papers as water wasters.

Having the private well overrode all the bullshit and of course we got turned in a few times by the local tattle tails. We were legal but the town said to put up a sign that said private well. I said were legal if you want me to put up a sign give me one. :D A couple days later they gave me one, but surprise most people cannot read. We generated a few more complaints about water wasting. The drought lasted a couple more months and then things went back to normal

Having a well with the political crap of today might be very beneficial down the road. Two sources of water might just come in handy, with the crazy weather of today, who the F knows.

I don't live in the city of Houston, but they have that, too. It's euphemistically called the "Rain Tax." Supposedly, the taxes collected go to flood mitigation projects.

Area churches were upset about the proposed tax, and fought it vociferously, until the city said, hey, y'all are exempt from it, and then suddenly, the churches were all in on it. They already paid zero property tax to get city services, and they got miffed when they were asked to chip in a bit to help mitigate flooding.

The problem we have here that it's a privately owned utility: Carolina Water. Owned by an out-of-state corporation. According to my neighbor, their profit is a fixed percentage of what their costs are. So they have every incentive to spend a much as possible: more employees than they need, new trucks every year for all of them, no incentive to fix leaks or maintain anything.

In fact our municipality, very fiscal responsible, wants to buy the system, but the corporation doesn't want to sell.

Our water utility, NSID (North Springs Improvement District) has done such a fine job of pushing pipe up our anuses, they are now in the land development game.

To me, this should be disallowed, as their focus should be public service, not other ventures which allow the windfalls to pay huge bonuses to their cadre of crooks:

https://www.bizjournals.com/southflorida/news/2021/10/08/north-springs-improvement-district-buys-heron-bay.html

And for those above the curve, they used bond money to raise money for the land purchase, for which the interest will paid from the differential in unit usage rates after the increase needed to buy the land.

We don't have sewerage or trash pick up where we live. Old house used to cost me $600 to get septic pumped (5 bedroom system) and we had to buy trash bags for the dump at $1 or so per bag, depending on size. Where I am now, we just had it built last year so no idea what septic will cost to have pumped(3 bedroom system), but a dump sticker costs $5 for the year. The only thing I have to pay for at the dump is construction debris, which will only be on a rare occasion, and is based on weight.

Up until 2 years ago, it was illegal to collect rainwater in CO. The reasoning is that once the water falls from the sky, it is under the water rights laws, and pretty much every drop of water is owned by someone.

What some of you are not saying is, what about sewerage and garbage pickup? Our city includes all that on one bill.

I know I brag a lot about FL, mostly at a state level, and the amenities we have, BUT I will never brag about the crooks in local government.

My previous post about our water utility being in the land development game is only the tip.

Our city controls the sanitation contract, we pay yearly on our property tax bill every NOV for the next year's twelve months.
The city now has all the monies to pay the provider in-full every JAN, so they do so and get a 3.00% discount, as the contractor is paid upfront AND does not have to run a collection department.
One would think that we as the payors would get the discounts.

We are also taxed anohter 20% of our Valorem Taxes as Non-Ad Valorem taxes by the city for fire and stormwater and drainage--of course I live in a neighborhood that required the builder to install all infrastructure, including drainage, thus I am paying for those in older neighborhoods that have no drainage.

In our county the Non-Ad Valorem is the new gold mine for taxing authorities, I fully expect to see in the very near future at least three of the taxing authorities receiving their currrent monies solely through Ad Valorem to also add a Non-Ad Valorem line item--I am usually almost always never wrong!!

I have to believe, a lot of municipalities base their water/sewer/trash on their tax base. When I lived in Gulfport, ms, my water bills were double what Im paying now. I didnt have a separate meter for my pool/sprinkler and it would easily be over 200 bucks in the summer if I watered my lawn and added water to the pool due to evaporation. Now I live in Biloxi, where we have numerous Casinos which really increases the tax base by MILLIONS of dollars so I think we all benefit from that. Hell, my electric bill in Gulfport in the summer would be close to $400 a month in the summer for smaller home (1600 sqft) compared to way less than $200 a month for my current home (2000+SqFt) in Biloxi. Two different electric companies though, so not sure how to compare the two.

Amazing how moving one city over decreased my monthly nut by over $400 a month...:D

According to Steve Lehto, you own all of the air space above your legal boundaries. Planes can fly over without trespassing, but to only if they don't disturb your quiet enjoyment. So how can someone else own your rain? The answer, I suppose, is that the right court case has not yet happened.
