View Full Version : What habitual methods do you employ to improve your mental acuity?

Are you often looking to accumulate overall knowledge, ideas, vocabulary or intellect?

I'll start:

I'm always utilizing synonym and antonym look-ups, and historical database sources for personal improvement.

My acuitous acumen is only surpassed by the time I spend goggling for rarer synonyms.

I no longer search for historical reinforcement since I change my affiliation to socialist, as those folks, now me included, are allowed to change and / or misquote the past with no ramifications.

I am too old to learn, and too obstinate to care about such.

Intellect is innate. Only way you're likely to modify that is with psychoactive drugs, and drugs are bad, M'kay?

Used to prioritize learning things that interested me or had some tangible benefit. These days anything is fair game. My pursuit of knowledge hasn't faded, just got more general.

Ideas I can figure out on my own. As for vocabulary, read the dictionary when I was 12. Up until I hit about 40 years of age I had perfect memory recall. Not much sense rehashing that and I couldn't care less about all the new words being invented by social degenerates.

First couple times were a bit hard for me but after that it wasn't very difficult to decipher his intent. Same as when somebody speaks with a heavy accent. I can usually follow along after a sentence or two if they're willing to repeat themselves. Question then becomes do I want to hear what they have to say. That isn't always the case, but Gene's OK in my book.

For a fair amount of time, I subscribe to Luminosity.
Also I do a fair amount of word puzzles and crosswords.

My issues are more around retention. I can't retain information I take in unless it is absolutely meaningless and worthless. Then it seems to stick like glue.

A recent news report said psilocybin mushrooms are good for fighting depression. Seems to work. Seems to work. Seems to…

Besides the mushrooms: posting to forums for writing and spelling skills, guitar, home projects, talking to friends; and most importantly, playing games with my grandkids and helping them with homework.

Every Friday I get the weekly paper from a nearby town. I cut out the puzzle page to do the puzzles. Each week it features a four-square Ken Ken. A six-square Ken Ken. And a 5-star (difficulty level) Sudoku.

I give myself 60 minutes to complete them all. The four-square Ken Ken takes about 1 minute. The 6-square Ken Ken is a little harder and can take four minutes or so. If all goes well, that leaves me with 55 minutes to complete the Sudoku.

I find the whole exercise to be a fun distraction.
