wet sand and rubbing compound work the best, in my experience.
That BMW I owned had some nasty headlights, and after trying a bunch of the chemicals and buffing stuff, it was easier to sand it off.

Had that on an old Miata I bought to race. I tried every product at Auto Zone and while some of them had a very minor effect, none of them worked worth a shit.

They are all just basic stepped polishing compounds, with a sealer like they use at windshield install place for spider cracks. I've used spray clear to finish with good results.

As does my son. His experience has been that The Pep Boys kits work okay if the lenses aren't really bad, but the really bad ones require serious abrasives and polishing. He uses commercial 3M buffing pads.

Initially his company was using a sealer, but they found the sealer was starting to yellow after a year or so and they have had fewer warranty claims since they stopped using it.

What did you use to clean the head lights?

3m headlight restoration kit.

Got it from auto-zone for 7.99.

Come with a piece that fits into a power drill, has velcro on it, and an assortment of sanding pads, 500g, 800g, 3000g and finally a dimpled polishing foam pad and some polishing compound.

Took about 20 minutes a light, and still had a couple pads left over, the result was a light that from 3 feet away, has no flaws at all, and has nearly perfect clarity.

I guess it depends how bad it is. My Miata was realy cloudy and I bought the kit from Turtle Wax and it worked well.

The Meguiars kit worked ok, but the lights fogged up again quickly. I'll try the 3m kit.

A friend used the meguires kit on his Alero and it seemed much much less aggressive in how it did the job.

The 3m kit has the 500 grit pads, they really remove alot of plastic in a hurry..it will kinda freak you out honestly. But the 800 makes it uniform and appear kinda clear, the 3000 more or less is there to setup for the polishing compound and buff out.

After I finished with the final buff, I put my oribital polisher on them with some carnuba wax and let it run a while...Im very happy with the results.

Ive got some before and afters if I can convince my camera to release them...

we did the lights on mrs. joecaver's Jag and they turned out perfect. Bought a small kit for $25 at Advance Auto that included 2 different grits of sandpaper and a small tube of sealant. We each did one side of the car and sanded by hand. The total time was about 20 minutes and they look like new.

That shit don't work. On the TV commercials, they smear mildly deteriorated headlamps with cooking oil to give the lenses a distorted, but easily restored look.

The foggy lenses I had looked exactly like in the ad and the product worked exactly as advertised. They were restored to as-new condition.

No clue what these kits you're talking about cost but when the headlights to my old Grand Cherokee starting looking like this, I found aftermarket headlights online (very inexpensive) and simply replaced the old ones. The OEM headlights were alot of money but, as I recall, the aftermarket ones were a fraction of that.

Less than $30 to make them good to go for at least another 5 years.

I used the Mother's Headlight Restoration Kit (with Power Ball) and it didn't do squat on the foggy lenses on my wife's '01 Odyssey. Didn't phase the lenses on my '94 Camry, either. :bilmem:

:yesnod: I have to not BLOW money in order to afford nice things.

I think the new headlights for the Grand Cherokee were about $15/each, and I'd tried some kind of lenses cleaner first. I figured getting new bulbs that were for sure clear was the best way to assure I didn't blow more money on the issue!

Well those sorry Mother's. :D
