View Full Version : The Chronicles of Bear

Say hello to my new little 4 legged biting chewing machine, a Sable German Shepherd named Bear. Working line dog, mom in from Germany this year.

Been here a week now, adjusting well as in everything has been chewed on LOL.

Said he was high drive and loved to bite, no false advertising there.

He had zero social skills being an only pup of the litter, he's getting better every day though.
Wish I'd gotten him a few weeks earlier and lucky did now as at 16 weeks he's been a handful.
After he'd been here a couple of days he was trotting around the yard when a tall blade of grass rubbed on him. He stopped and turned around with a look of "I know you didn't just touch me" He then proceeded to go postal on the grass... I'm not gonna lie, I right then may have sensed I had a Tasmanian devil not a puppy.

He gulps food so new slow eating bowl for him. Really making him mad but it also tires him out.

Went for his first car ride today and did well.

Hardest thing for him is he needs alot more nap time than he wants, but his behavior has gotten better.
He can hear a squirrel fart half mile away I swear.
Pretty much used to my movements and routine now, wife and son he's getting better with but has picked up a bad habit this week of barking.

Started training already, he walks decent enough and will sit most of the time. He's got a bad habit of mouthing your hands which I'm getting close of ridding him of hopefully.
He's a handful but a good boy, only a couple of accidents in house so far.

Next round of shots soon so guess we see how he likes the needle.
Couple pics of Bear and parents.

Stay tuned for the next puncture filled episode....

He's getting used to running around while doing yard chores already, he's scared of 4 wheeled cart still.
Told the wife to avoid fuzzy robes.. She didn't listen and he disrobed her.. I may have laughed. I get out of the hospital Sunday.

Very most excellent Doggie, I love GSs, will have one in the future.

An aside, wifey got an AussieDoodle (Aussie Shepherd / Poddle) 5 months ago, now Dolly is seven months, big girl, over 40 pounds, AND she chews everything in sight, I realize she has great teeth, but damn, no need to show us everyday.
Oh, and she eats AND poops like a horse!!

Good luck with that awesome dog!!

He was a bit cranked up from not being able to run much yesterday... He about ran his legs off.
Ran into me twice about killed both of us.
Figured out the phrase "come back here with that you sum beach" means "run faster" to Bear.. :slap:
I'm getting a big net.

Bear ran into gate post last week about ruined himself. Think he bruised his ribs. I know he was hurting as he quit biting completely. Kept in wire kennel for 4 or 5 days mostly until he healed up. Think he dog tracks so bad frt end cleared and back end didn't. I turned around for 2 seconds so didn't see what happened. About 95% healed up.

Getting more used to wife and son, barking at them cut way down now. He's barking for attention mainly.

Feeding him more often, every 2 or 3 hours now, seems to be calming him down some.

Practicing car rides every couple of days, went for solo back seat ride before bed tonight.

Put a blanket over kennel to limit his stimuli so sleeps better.

Neighbors dog(who bit the other neighbor) barked at us on a walk last week and Bear wanted nothing to do with it. Nope, nada ain't happening. Put ears back and pulled me back home to the door. Stranger Danger I guess. Still won't walk out to the road with me.

Once he gets better in car I'll take him out alot more to expose him to as much as possible.

Best dog I ever had was a Shepard, got it younger than the pup you picture above. Fiercely protective of the family but a big baby at heart....in a bizarre bit of behavior UPS trucks freaked her out, she got where she could identify their sound when approaching the neighborhood and boy everybody knew a package was coming, frantic barking and running about. Never did figure that out, mailman, FedEx etc - she couldn't care less.

Cute looking pup. I hope he grows into those ears.

In my experience, I have no doubt he will do just that. Might not be a good thing though!

Miss Belle looked like that, HUGE ears, and incredibly high energy when she came home. Grew into the ears, and the folks saying "she'll calm down a lot when she turns 2", well, Belle never got that memo. Still a raving lunatic at nearly 11 years old. Loves her morning cuddle with her Dad though, so I wouldn't trade her for the world.

Getting him out and about couple times a week, car rides up to an hr. He's very good in the car.
Vehicles in parking lots are noisey and scared him. Took into Lowe's a couple of times. Didn't mind ride in cart. Not super thrilled about strangers yet. Yes he's a bit skittish, working on it daily.
Next up will be a trip to local park and go visit mom at work.

My Shephard puppiy's ears would actually cross when we first got her, weird looking. My daughter grew up with the dog and when it passed the whole family was just desolated for a good while. Daughter is 42 now and she has a rescue mutt, Disco the Wonder Dog. Ugly as mud, lovable as all hell.

I love those slow feeders. I use a version of that for wet food for my special needs, rescue cat that used to gulp her food…and the immediately throw it up. 😒 They work like a charm. 👍

Looking forward to seeing more of Bear. GSDs are one of my favorite breeds. I just don’t have the time or yard space for one. ☹️

Bear doing well, biting is getting better thankfully.
47 lbs last I checked.
Turning into a guard dog already barking at strange noises.
He found an overdrive gear so his top speed is approaching Ludacris speed now.
Decided to try and bite holes in yard cart tires, vacuum, leaf rake, steel posts, garden hose.. Ok pretty much everything beside me. Teething in full swing, found a baby tooth the hard way the other day.
Teaching him some agility stuff already, picking it up pretty quickly.
He decided the sprayer on hose which he was afraid of 2 weeks ago was now a signal to go bat shit crazy and attack the water spraying. He's learning to dig fox holes in the yard and then play in the mud when it rains.
Need to make him or buy a rain hood as hard rain in his ears last night really bothered him. He learned what the umbrella was for.
Still taking him out couple times a week to socialize, getting alot more comfortable with loud noises and lots of action.
Few pics from the last couple of weeks. First one I call Bear signal...

Looking good, and remember, a doggie like that can never have too many chew toys.
Our Dolly Dolly has at least 100, but maintains a great fondness for throw pillows, of which I am indifferent, as never understand their utility.

My wife and I were fortunate to have our GSD for 13 years. Had to put her down this past August due to cancer. Over the years we’ve had mostly Collies, one Sheltie, and one GSD. They were all great dogs in their own way. The shepherd was a very sweet dog but at the same time didn’t put up with ANY BS. If the right one comes along we will have another one. I think you will really enjoy and love that pup.

Bear continues to grow, 51 lbs and just about 6 months old now.
Boney ass puppy.
Settling in now to a routine pretty good finally.
Been working those teeth with big cow bones and rawhides.
I changed his feeding schedule today and he let me know it was unacceptable.
Still working on training, come and stay need work. Had to get a shock collar as he ran off on me last week and took half hr to get him corralled then he tried biting me when taking his ass beating.
Only used the actual shock part a few times on lower setting, vibration works well.
He was going after extension cords once and was getting very bitey with wife outside.
Wants to sleep on my bed now, which if he actually sleeps is fine. Surprisingly a vibrate and say goto bed and he curls up and sleeps on my bed. Guess it's just getting his attention mostly.
He decided hand cart was the enemy and tries to rip tires off it, and leaf blower and garden hose, yard wagon, extension cords... He has issues.
Does well in public, still a spaz but listens well. Saw a lady on a rascal scooter and told her to stop as he was eyeballing her tires. Never considered that scenario.
Been practicing car trips and he does very well, usually lays down and naps after a bit which is good as 12 hr trip next month.
He seems to have turned a corner with biting and behavior... Both are improving greatly.

Well he hit a lull in growth and teething for a couple of weeks maybe, now he's back at the hungry all the time and starting growing alot again. So food increase was needed, almost 6 cups a day. Started trying to bite me over food pan which didn't end well for him.
Behaves pretty well for a puppy except with the food and chew bones as they had to get put up for now.
Walks better on leash than alot of my other dogs did. Outgrew his harness already, fat dog in little coat syndrome.
Car rides going well, usually lays down takes a nap after a few minutes.
Absolutely goes bat shit crazy over any wheels moving and the vacuum isn't going to make it I fear as it's his nemesis.

Big bob

Better break him of this or he will end up getting run over. Best way I found while he still has puppy teeth to lose is to fasten a rag to a lug nut of a wheel he likes to attack and tow it around. He will get a surprise when he grabs it and gets tossed on his ass.

Bear is almost 70 lbs now best i can get a weight on him. Coming up on 8 months old.

Trip of 700 miles each way this month with him and the wife, besides biting her when he had to poop and deciding to rip the seat back off it was just a horrible trip LOL. He didn't behave well alot of the time although the wife got him to sleep in her lap for hrs. Heavy rain, snow and 30 knot winds each way does not make a fun trip especially with a spaz of a dog.

His speed picked up to Mach 1.2 one night while up North around Midnight. Scared the hell out of me running full bore right by me in the dark. Just decided he needed to run one night...

Got his big boy hair and fur coming in, started at about 7 months old. So now we have hairballs all over.
He enjoys a good combing though.

He was scared of two little bitty dogs next to where we stayed on trip for 2 days... They bark so loud think it hurts his ears, then they all figured out they all liked to run and run for hours they did. He refused to play in the yard until I cleaned up the poop from friend's dog... Looked at me like who poops all over the place, that's just nasty. I wonder about him sometimes.

Still having issues with aggression over food and chew bones, he tried to nip me once over chew bone and paid for it dearly.
He got bitey playing last week so smacked him on the nose... So he slapped the dog shit right out of me, about broke my nose. Wth dog. Those hockey sticks of his are longer than they look.

Started sleeping with me on bed for an hr now and then but always gets too hot and goes to his fan and kennel.

He has decided to destroy his kennel pad on a daily basis so no pad for now just some towels. Need to find some super tough fabric and make covers.

He has destroyed numerous rope toys, basically any dog toy not made of firehose is shredded in mear seconds. I ordered a box of rope and just make rope pull toys now and he's never left alone with them.

Sleeps 7 hrs or so maybe more every night and zero accidents in house.

Working on Heel and Stay commands which with a spaz are not easy. Getting better but it's alot of work and time.

Already been asked how much I'd charge to stud him out... I'm gonna pimp that dog out all over the East Coast if the price is right. Where's my pimp hat at.

Couple pics from this week.

Nine month old update time...
70 to 75 lbs as haven't weighed this month. Boy he is filling out alot.
Loves to run and wrestle as much as he can.
Calming down some more as he'll sleep on bed for an hour or two a day now.
Getting very attached to rest of the family and takes exception to them not playing with him or when they leave he gets riled up big time.

Last week he unfortunately was hurt and has been kennel bound since. He had slightly injured a foot or ankle the week before when yard was muddy and I hadn't been playing hard with him so we wrestle mainly and walk alot. He gets a toy or ball and wrestles your feet or legs if sitting. He really loves when you sit on ground and he gets his wrestle on. He had knocked me over so we were leg wrestling and somehow he caught right front awkward and went down and hurt his shoulder badly. Nothing dislocated but he had a bad limp for a few days and yipped when twisting it. I got him a shoulder brace and been keeping him in kennel 95% of the time, which is super fun being he's a full blown spaz. The brace is slowing him down if nothing else as it immobilizes his shoulder mostly forcing him off it.
I fenced a very small area off for him to use outside also. Luckily I had a super comfy 4 inch memory foam dog pad in reserve for him to use.
This will be an extended recovery of 2 additional weeks at least as he's still pretty sore, although he doesn't act like it sometimes as he'll try running full speed outside.
Hopefully couple weeks and he'll be back to full spaz.

Sorry to hear he got a "tweak". As I approach 60 years old myself, I can relate to a play session gone a little too wild. Miss Belle reacts well to "Novox", basically a doggie NSAID. He still is a handsome buck, and sure to be a handful going forward!

I forgot to mention that Bear has not recognized the fall time change one single day.. So I'm looking forward to this weekend and sleeping until 7 as he is awake between 530 and 6 every morning wanting to eat. I asked him about the time change and pretty sure he said I could cram it up my bung hole and if I didn't feed him he'd eat my bed so.... We get up before 6. He eats 4 times a day, I did attempt to reduce number of times and he gave me a look like only a woman could give you. I don't speak a lot of doglish but I got the point.

Ten months old now, 75 lbs best weight i could get.
Just finally about healed up from shoulder injury. No limp I've seen the last few days.
Kept his run area very limited for almost 3 weeks, then expanded some and back to full area now. Still not running him that much and making sure he doesn't jump as much as possible.
Still a spaz but he's calmed down a wee bit.
Sleeps 8 hrs or so at night with about a 2 hr nap in the afternoon. Up by 615 every morning as he's hungry.
He can stand on hind legs and balance himself quite well now.
He started playing hide and seek with me last week. He will throw the ball out when behind something and hide.. Waits for me to get close and grabs the ball and takes off.
Got him some new spiky balls to play with and he loves them, brings it in when he comes in and keeps a spare in his bed. He hasn't destroyed one yet which is unheard of.
He has to have something in his teeth most of the time.
Another trip north in a couple of weeks and hoping he behaves better this trip.

Eleven months old now, getting bigger not much heavier yet.
Another trip in the books. Think he gets motion sick a little as he prefers to lay down and nap on your lap. He slept 75% of the time.
Stopping at rest areas is interesting... I went into bathroom leaving his window down some and he took exception to me leaving. Tried to go out the window taking out the vent visor and wife said he tried breaking the window. When we stop he gets all cranked up until I get him out of car then calms right down.. Wth dog. We will need to practice stopping.
Did better in car, only a couple of times did he try and get bitey/pushy.
Tried to bolt when wife got out once, I had forgotten to put the safety leash on seat belt before we returned(my bad almost cost me a dog). Barely grabbed his tail before it was too late.

He had a great time while gone, the neighbors have 2 small yappy dogs on one side and a visiting medium size on the other side. Those 2 ran themselves tired pretty much every day running up and down the fence.

Bear decided nap time and a few hours every night was sleep on my legs time. Just anxious I imagine.

He found an opening between a gate and house by the driveway he could get his nose and ball through. He would drop it with some English and could hit me with it most of the time or he'd drop it and punch with a paw to reach other side of car where I was.
He wore my friend out dropping it and him throwing it(small yard so lots of throws).

Grandson of the neighbor asked me why Bear was barking at him.. Well you're hiding behind a tree like a bad person, he doesn't know you and that's what guard dogs do. That kid not the sharpest knife in the drawer :slap:
I warned him to stay away from the fence until Bear got used to him and calmed down.. And of course he came up to fence 3 minutes later. I scared the kid yelling at him and pretty sure grandpa called him a dumbass.

Bear decided the alley was his property too and anyone or anything was subject to his barking and warnings to stay away. Wait until the little bastards who tease dogs piss him off this summer. Noki almost pulled one through the fence.

Somehow Bear injured his paw, either just before we returned or on trip home. It sure looked like an ankle injury but he's the worst dog ever to look at so just let him spend a few days inside in kennel. Well he must have cut his toe or something as it swelled up and came out a couple of days ago. Looks like a 3/4 inch wound and it's still open a bit but drainage about done. He's about 90% back to normal already.

He's growing up quickly and calming down more and more, soon he'll be a constant companion by my side not needing constant supervision... I can hope anyways.
A few pics from the trip a couple of the turtle he found awhile back.

Hi Bear. Be a good boy today!

Rodnok1
06-12-2023, 6:41am
Well Bear is a year old now and about 80 lbs.
Story from this month is toe/nail issues. The wound ended up healing up then flaring back badly. Toe swelled up about double. It had an abscess between the toes. Vet figured as we did he had broken the toe so options of cutting it off were discussed. He said it wasn't a load bearing toe and he'd be fine without it, that or very expensive surgery and plates and screws.
Xrays came back negative but the nail had died all the way back and was infected. He had never seen this and he's been a vet for 30 plus years.
The abscess relieved itself when he just touched it, barf. Cut the nail way way back and cauterized it. Packed with silver sulfadiazine I believe and away we went. The sedation wasn't nice to him and he peed all over himself when we got home. He seemed fine at vet's office. Few days later vet said it looked way better than he expected so topical antibiotics for wound and keep it wrapped and dry. No problem... It healed in 3 or 4 more days and seemed to be better. Oral antibiotics were given.

Last week started favoring that paw again. Great.
It had swelled up some again and upon inspection the inside of nail had dead tissue in it. Cleaned it out which he didn't care for and cleaned with wound cleaner. It had some drainage and has since. Been changing the dressing and cleaning it, applying silver wound gel 2 or 3 times a day(he rips the bandages off alot).
Looks like a long haul recovery, it's gotten better and swelling has gone down some.

Looking for a non prescription treatment, not sure if need to draw infection out or just keep using the stuff we have.
Those 800 to 1k trips to vet are a bit much for a toe that's sore.
It's not nasty looking or anything and will get a vet trip if gets worse again. So at home treatment and resting the toe.

I believe he may have reinjured it or aggrevated it running and playing so hard. To me looks like its where toe bone meets nail bone area that's the issue. So keep it padded and dry best we can.

He tore the dressing off again this morning and went full spaz outside as it's been 4 or 5 days since he could run. No way to stop him once it starts. Spazergy has to be relieved. I cut his outside area down to few hundred square feet to keep running down.

He's become quite the talker especially when he sees momma. I prepare his food on counter and some day he just eats it like a human while I eat some toast. He stands so well on back legs and thinks counter is just someplace one looks for food. He's not wrong.

He runs so fast and plays so hard outside. Loves to wrestle over his ball and jambs it into you back and arms(spikes on ball smarts and I look like I have measles from it). Think he's picking up tips from WWE on how to ruin me. :slap:

Have been approached about studding him 3 times already so Bear's going to be busy soon and help pay for the vet bills.

Couple pics of injury and recovery so far.

Nail is healing up still, about 2/3 new growth. Still bothers him on occasion and favors that paw if plays too hard. Had to cut alot of the dead nail off again this week. Hopefully 2 or 3 months and it'll be fully regrown.

He's mellowing out some finally, will lay around and get pets on occasion now.

Getting his guard dog on now, big dog bark has came out.

Training going ok, stay is being a difficult one to master.

Ten day trip north went well, gave him a mellow pill this time so slept alot in car.
He really doesn't like yippy little dogs at all and neighbors have 3 where we stay on trip.

Skips his 630 to 730am naps now as he's a big boy so we're outside playing at 630 now.
Helps me do all my chores and takes those bad yard tools from me so I don't get hurt.. Good boy.. I think.

Lives for playing with squeaky balls and running. His speed has really picked up, I may need to extend his play area so he can achieve top speed soon as 300 ft doesn't seem to be long enough. He will zoom by and it's a tad unnerving when he brushes against you on the way by.

He's filling out nicely at 85 lbs although I wish he'd get a little fat one him the boney bastard.
Sleeps on my legs for an hr most nights then gets hot and off to his bed.

Enjoys his doggo pool and goes nuts if spray with hose but hates being splashed with water. :slap:

Only two things he doesn't destroy. His spiky balls and his 4 inch foam bed. He ate half of the last one and went about a month laying on plastic floor of kennel... When he hurt himself I put this one in and he hasn't touched it. Giess he likes a comfy bed. I take it out once a week or so change the cover let it air out and he gets an attitude if not back for his nap :toetap:

Glad Bear is getting better, maybe the best GSD I have ever seen, needs to do some modeling.

Ever had a dog do modeling/ads?

Well Bear aka Spaz has been with me one year now... Time is flying by.
His toenail still hasn't grown out completely or correctly. It bothers him from time to time still.
Still wakes at 6am every damn day. Now he doesn't nap in the morning so we're outside playing around 630.
He's really beefed up and is muscular from running and playing. He's full speed ahead now that weather has cooled off. God he runs hard and loud, sounds like a horse galloping.
His inner guard dog is coming out, he quit barking alot of times and just stalks stuff(people animals whatever).
I had been training him to be out of kennel until medical issues for me popped up, it keeps him in kennel more now. Still training him, sit stay give me the damn ball... :slap:

He's calmed down more, now he thinks about what he wants to destroy first instead of just destroying everything. He still gets mad and gets into wife's stuff, It's hilarious.
He'll hork a sock or hair scrunchie down in a heartbeat. I don't see training that out of him unfortunately.

Since it's cooler in the mornings now so I put sleep pants on and a jacket, which means to Bear attack, run full speed attack again... Damn dog. He'll ruin somebody he really hates.

He's turning into a very good doggo and companion who insists on being with me.

New squeaky ball toy today. Only has 5k squeaks on it so far.

Bear is a year and a half old now. He's definitely mellowing out finally.
Although his guard dog is now coming out.
Still has more energy than any dog I've ever seen, he can play all day and talk about running hard.
Sounds like a horse running with those huge paws.
Changed his food as other one was too rich for his belly now.
Still working on sit, stay and come here... Those are achievements he is struggling to meet, most likely because I've been laid up for months and haven't been able to work with him enough.
He's getting mischievous in now he hunts the house for stuff to get into instead of just grabbing whatever is in sight. He'll rummage through a coat for a hat and gloves to steal.
He's so tall and can stand on hind legs straight up so he can get into just about everything.
Still hasn't grew in winter coat or fur so he gets cold on those 32 degree mornings. He's all bone and muscle.. Needs some fat on him. So winter coat goes on when he's out when cold.
He loves those squeaky balls, gone through a few dozen already. Trying to find some that the squeaker doesn't break after a day or 2.
Weighs in about 90 to 95 lbs now and is learning to use that weight as leverage when we wrestle. He loves to wrestle. If he's not done playing he tries to grab both your legs and tackle you, how he does it no idea but he's taken me down a few times.
Couple of pics from this week, not many in the last few months as I've been inside mostly unfortunately.

Thanks for the story of the journey from pup to current! The only toys our Labs didn't destroy were Kong. Anything else with a squeaker they made it their mission in life to remove the squeaker.

Didn't realize I hadn't updated this since last year.
Bear is 2 years old today.
Slimmed down some actually from non stop playing for a month while we were up north helping a friend.
Today he attempted to kill himself running through garage door screens and flipping most awkwardly and landing on neck/shoulder. I was scared he had killed himself, seems to be fine.
He's turning into a very good boy, not that he still isn't a huge spaz and PITA.
He loves when we travel to friends house as has neighborhood dogs to fence run with.
He's seldom locked in kennel now neither inside or out as he stays by my most of the time and sleeps on my legs now pretty much every night.
Still gets car sick a little so I sedate him for trips.
Goes through a case of squeaky balls once a month or quicker.
Some pics mostly from the last month we were gone and one of Cooper his out of town friend(doesn't play with him as Cooper old as dirt and crippled).
The smoker is his he said....
He can put english on that ball when puts through the opening by gate and either puts it between your feet or into your hand if working on a car. He's good...

My baby is growing up finally. Phew...
Been super good on my trips north.
He sleeps almost exclusively against me now, not a good thing in the summer.
Couple of nights ago he woke up and grabbed my leg with one of those hockey sticks of his and pulled to his chest then fell back to sleep. He has bonded so hard with me it's difficult to leave him for any length of time, especially when we are up north.
I spend hrs a day playing with him still else he gets let's say a tad pissy and finds interesting places to try and shove those squeaky balls. I have areas that look like I have measles. :toetap:
Couple of pics from the last week or so.
He was helping me clean a dryer out and screwdrivers are perfect size to steal and chew on. Ya know I'm gonna eat that right. Sigh... Still more training to do.
