Guy at work had a bunch of those. He was into building them from parts. Tried to get him to make one for me. He seemed receptive to the idea but for whatever reason that never happened. Oh well.

My one was a $99 parts kit ( from 1995) and a $500 receiver. They've increased in price quite well.

Making one for yourself is perfectly legal; building one for even a friend puts you on a less stable legal footing... the Fed might deem even a one time not for personal use builder a "manufacturer". And manufacturers need federal licensing, liability insurance, logbooks, ad infinitum; ad nauseum.
