Yosemite National Park. Kings Canyon National park with the redwoods. Big Sur, the beach cities. Mojave desert. The Sierra Nevada's, Lake Tahoe I can see why, considering your state has more. :yesnod:

The problem is the "normal" tourist does Disneyland, Hollywood, Pier 39 and other crap stuff. I don't think I'd ever move back, but if I could be left alone near Big Sur, or north of SF on the Mendocino coast, I'd probably be pretty damn happy.

Well, I was hoping to meet up with you but.....

We spent most of our trip visiting and spending time with my oldest son, which was absolutely the BEST!!!!

He lives in NOHO, his first apartment choice, coming from out of state. He's moving to Pasadena when the lease expires in May. Both areas along with so many others, have houses so close to each other you could pass the toilet paper to your neighbors bathroom windows....

We did however eat some really great food and drinks (taking a huge bite out of my retirement funds)....

And I just loved all the smog, hours of standing traffic, homeless tents everywhere, crime, unfinished housing, and most of all the incredibly HIGH prices of everything!!! Then, after leaving the city heading south to Temecula, the State is one word, 'beige'. Everything is earth toned sand, browns, and beiges, houses, endless strip centers, hills and flats, all beige.....

Palm Springs was nice and the gondola ride climbing to 8500' was fun. Oozing money was the feeling in this town.

Then off to La Jolla, seeing the seals, sea lions and pelicans was kinda neat. But this was another over populated, high traffic area, IMO...Then driving the 101 back to NOHO was another grueling ride.

A day at Universal wasn't bad and had a very well controlled crowd, nothing like the unruly Theme Parks here....

So, to recap my trip, "meh" was the feeling I left with towards most, but I say the west coast was a nice place to visit, but I could never live there....

Here's proof I'm not "normal" I didn't visit any of those places.....We did cruise through Beverly Hills but didn't stop and visit Aunt Ruthie....

I'm quick to pile on when people talk bad about California. But I've spent a lot of time there from San Diego to the Northern Coast, mostly before the politics spoiled things, and IMO there is more natural beauty there than any state I've visited. Haven't been to Maine or Alaska but guessing CA has them beat. At least the climate is better.

During the early 90s I plotted on how to move to the San Diego area but it didn't happen and now ICNLT. Well, maybe some isolated spot north of Mendocino...

If you went from North Hollywood to Temecula, back up the coast to Los Angeles, I could see why you would say, “meh.” You went the wrong direction on the PCH. You should have gone north through Santa Barbara, through Los Olivos, Morro Bay, Cambria, Big Sur, Carmel, and Monterey. There’s a lot less traffic, less brown, and way more relaxing. The traffic between San Diego and LA sucks most of the time.

Back in the day...

We used to go abalone diving off of Ft Ross. Cold as hell, but at the time, still a good place to harvest a few beauties. Even at that time, they had already restricted the sport to free diving only. Funny that we would talk about "sneaking up" on a snail, but if you didn't get the abalone iron under it on the first try, you may as well move on.

Clean, pound and barbecue on the beach. I don't even see it anymore on a menu.

The coast from Santa Barbara north is amazingly beautiful. I think we probably surfed every spot from Gaviota to Pt Arena.

Back in the day, I used to go out for abalone all up and down the coast. I’d go lobster diving by myself at 3 am… not anymore though. I don’t know if it’s global warming or better protection for seals and sea lions, but in the last decade the coast has become a haven for Great White sharks. It used to be rare to see them, now you can see them along the Surfline from many piers on any given day of the week. If I was going for lobsters, I’d probably pack a Glock.

Kalifornia at one point was a great place to live.

Still is. It doesn't affect me on where i want to go. If the mountains, Deserts, Beaches, National Parks, any sporting event 12 month out of the year. I can go sailing and sking the same day. I don't worry about the prices of homes because my family and friends all have one. I don't let the gas prices ruin my day. I remember bitching when gas hit one dollar. Because i have a screw ball Governor should i move out of state? You have a screw ball President are you going to leave the country?

We go to California every 2-3 years on vacation. We do not do LA or San Fran other than the airports we fly into. It is a beautiful state full of great scenery and tremendous places to visit but I could never live there.
I actually feel the same way about Chicago. Great place to visit but there is NFW I would ever live there

Lived in Monterey . . .back in the day.
Nephew has a bar and B&B in Morrow Bay.
Would love to return to "the hood" and see some sights BUT
I'm confident at this point in time there would be no "family discounts"
Consequently, only thing I left there was daughters birth certificate (Carmel) but got several certified copies before we left the area, again . . . back in the day.
No reason so spend $6.00 for gas!

While I'm sure you said this in jest, Portugal is looking pretty damn inviting these days. No real need for a car. Check back with me in December. I'm sure I would need to have some sort of boat accident prior to the move, but maybe it would just be burial with a treasure map for if I came back.

No reason to spend $100+ on dinner with the wife and family. No reason to spend hundreds of dollars on sporting events or vacations. Stay away from drinking alcohol since that's expensive. Make sure you keep the same car for 10+ years so you don't have a car payment. Don't go out with a bang in life go out like a wet fart and have to leave your state to go on vacation. :yesnod:

Thankfully, money is not the issue. Being left alone to live my life is. Biggest reason I'm not still in some remote spider hole in CA is because I just couldn't escape the Gavinists. Bishop? Chico? Red Bluff? I'm coming to a similar conclusion in CO these days. TX and FL are too freaking hot for me. Just let me live out my days watching the Nazare monsters, provide some reasonable wideband, and I'm probably good. You're old enough to remember when CA was the "whatever, dude" place. I'd likely be there if that was still the case. Probably the place where the term Karen was invented.

So you left California because you weren't happy with it and the politics, and you move to Colorado but now you're not happy with their politics. You like the politics of Texas and Florida but it's too hot. Try being happy with yourself and then you can live anywhere knowing every place has it's problems. :yesnod:
