Spring has sprung, and my convertible is 17 years old, and starting to show its age, and I am thinking about upgrading.

Took a look at this car yesterday:

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/CathDoc/SL.jpg

Asking price is $88,999.

I looked it over, not really fond of the mileage (36,000) but a mismatched seam on the front fascia/fender lineup made me CarFax it and yes it was involved in a front end collision.

The dealer has had the car advertised for the same price since October.

Assuming that the mileage and accident history do not cause me to take a pass (and in reality they probably will), what would VBOT take off of the value of the car for the accident history? Kelley Blue Book puts the car in "excellent" condition at $88675.

What say almighty VBOT?

$70k considering the damage

I would take a minimum of 20% off the price because of the accident damage.

I think something like $104-110

husband of a lady friend of my wife bought a new Benz...SL something...I heard it cost 100K or something...probably similar to the one you looked at.

this guy is funny...all over the map w/ cars...he had a Cadillac CTS...then a Chrysler Magnum...a C6 Z...then a new Camaro...now the Benz.

Fresh out of warranty probably. Most likely a leased car that's been flogged for 3-4 years, and came in. Go in very low(high 50's), because the labor and parts will quickly eat up the difference. Check with the service dept, about how much a typical oil change, tune-up or alignment will cost you. Does it have new tires?$$$ Then, get your butt out of there!

It looks like it went through the auction on 8/4/2010 for $79,000. I would be more concerned about how much damage was done than the mileage or Carfax report. Does it look like just the bumper was replaced or has the whole front been fixed up? If it was noticeable, I wonder how well it has been repaired.

If you buy it just remember, while a Car Fax accident listing may not be much of an issue for you now it certainly will be when it comes time to trade or sell it.

That's a good question. Do you think the repairing dealer would tell me what was done to it if I could track them down? It was done in GA.

Don't touch it without a deep discount and a very good warranty.

Clean Carfax or not, plan on losing your ass on an $89,000 used car, but you are correct that it can make a difference in selling it yourself.

There is only one way to find out, do you know or can find out who fixed it?

I sorta figured, but I also figured that someone lost at least $15-20k on this car based on new to now, so I would do the same if I went new :-(

Gonna do some snooping, Heck, I'm bored :D

I sorta figured that you sorta figured that you already knew that. :D I think the 600's were around $140G's new in 2009. If they have been sitting on it since before October, they're real anxious to move it if they have any smarts. I would assume they are the ones that picked it up at auction for $79K, they would be smart to off it if they get an offer anywhere close to that. 36,000 miles won't hurt that car, but it kills the resale.

But you gotta admit, a twin turbo'd V12 is way cool. In this case though, I'm just not a big believer in buying someone else's problems. Got enough of my own. :)

If you're going to spend that kinda coin, the car better be flawless, and low mileage. I say no, due to the damage.

I can go look at this one, should you want me to. Looks just like my buddy's SL63. Kinda fun ride. Too many electrical nannies for my taste. If that car had a 6-speed manual, I'd be all over it.

For that price, those doors better be heavy and the former owner needs to be from Bolivia.

Well, I made a stab at it for $80 and they wouldn't budge off the price. I really want a convertible wiht some oomph to it, and since I have the Z for manual shifting fun the automatic thing doesn't get to me much. Good luck to them finding another sucker.

Repo/Data, thanks for the offers but $85 is about the limit right now for anything I don't HAVE to have. Gorgeous car tho!

They didn't counter or anything? What a bunch of dumb asses. They probably have more than $80k in it now from carrying it for months and fixing a few things, but they could at least counter with a break-even number that gets them out of a problem and any car that is past 90 days on the lot is a problem. When I was in the biz and faced with a loss we could live with on a "90-dayer" and could earn a new customer, they would be leaving in their new car. I was known for saying we are running a car lot here, not a fu**in' museum.

I bet if you shop a little bit and can handle a few miles you can get into an SL63 pretty easily.
